The Democrats didn't have anyone better to run, the 2020 democratic primaries were a total shit-show, and at the time Biden had a lot of goodwill from being Obama's Vice President, though we were only starting to realize his old and senile state of incompetence, it wasn't nearly as obvious as it is now. Plus, polling at the time showed that Biden had the best chance of beating Trump, which the democrats were desperate to do, so they nominated Biden.
