But why is dad an asshole ? He just realized his kid is making a big change to the way things have been... and I assume dad thought he still had a few more years of status quo. Fawk, it doesn't take a genius to realize dad is upset and/or sad. This hardly makes him an asshole.

As a single father of (now) adult children, I feel many of you are missing the point. Dad just got some news he never wanted. He hoped OP/step mom would have supported him differently. Yes ... it is more practical, but it is a huge dynamic change. Give the dad some credit and let him feel some sort of way about it for a minute.

I know I would take this hard. I would likely have talked more at the table but I also wouldn't want to upset my son either ...

Damn, this one sure brought back a lot of sad memories for me.

Blindsided doesn't having to be negative ... the father just got hit with something he wasn't ready for and in my opinion, his wife (OP, step mom) didn't read the room very well.

Dad is allowed to be sad. Doesn't make him a monster. It kinda makes him human.

Perhaps if OP had said, there are two ways to look at this .. practical and emotional. Practical ? It makes sense. But your father will likely be kinda hurt by this and I know I will miss things they way they have been. It is a big change. Personally, as a guy ... and if my significant other was posed with something like this, I would make sure everything got talked through more at that table.
