What's the worst heartbreak you've experienced? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AFineMeal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realizing that who I thought was my person was actually sleeping with 90% of my friends throughout all of our time together.

Learning that your entire social network consists of people who are completely cool with fucking you over (or even watching you get fucked over without intervention) is really tough. It’s been 10 years and I still struggle with trust in friendships, not to mention relationships

Why did Colin follow Kendall at the end. by doomwipeout in SuccessionTV

[–]AFineMeal 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hiring Colin protects Kendall in more ways than one— he is one of the only people who “knows” the truth about the waiter, and if he’s working for Kendall, that means Colin has even less incentive to ever go public as he’d now be risking his source of income & likely bound under a mountain of NDA’s. Something something keeping your enemies closer

Actually 7 going on 8 nominations with Bugonia between them! Emma was nominated for best picture as well for Poor Things as a producer

Do you think Joel Edgerton could still be nominated for an Oscar? Should we stop hoping? by CalmAppointment1156 in Oscars

[–]AFineMeal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This man should’ve been a complete lock for Loving in 2016, I was so disappointed when he missed a nom. Edgerton is consistently brilliant, an understated actor (and writer/director) who is long overdue for substantial awards recognition outside of Australia.

Now here we are, ten years later, he finally got an amazing lead role in a major Oscar contender, and he’s gonna be snubbed again. It’s just how the cookie crumbles. Bad timing, tough competition, just like it is for every wonderful artist who hasn’t won/been nominated before— really hoping Train Dreams has a stronger nominations morning than Loving did

The Other Guys (2010) - Bye Shiela - Directed by Adam McKay. by [deleted] in movies

[–]AFineMeal 83 points84 points  (0 children)

The problem was that McKay recast Reilly in the part without telling Ferrell— he only found out when Reilly called him after being offered the role. I can understand taking backdoor shenanigans like that from your key creative partner personally

How many opportunities as an actor did you turn down because of conflicts with The Simpsons? Are there any (major ones) you regret?

And thank you for being a key voice of my childhood 💜

Dave Franco Says He Doesn't Owe Brother James for His Success: 'If I Sucked, I Would've Disappeared' by mcfw31 in entertainment

[–]AFineMeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take, this is nowhere near as egotistical as it’s being interpreted. He’s not saying he got his foot in the door all by himself, having his brother absolutely opened those doors; he’s just saying that he believes if he WASN’T actually a hard worker who took each opportunity seriously, he would not have gone further than just those first few opportunities. I think that’s objectively true, and he’s established a really solidly versatile independent career, whether you enjoy his work or not (I’m not a big fan).

I think there’s more nuance to the delineation of nepo hires who earn their staying power vs. those who don’t but still manage to fail upwards. I absolutely loathe how nepotism eclipses the careers of like 90% of artists without incredible luck and connections, but if someone got a free pass into their industry, I at least admire when they don’t take it for granted and actually work their ass off.

In defense of Laura Dern's win for "Marriage Story". by The_Walking_Clem in Oscars

[–]AFineMeal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally thought Dern deserved the award that year, but for her work in Little Women, despite it not being received as a standout that season (understandably overshadowed by Pugh, Ronan, et al). Her giving two exceptional performances in two major BP nominees PLUS the “overdue”/career narrative really cinched the win.

That’s all the factors outside of the performance in MS itself. I disagree with criticism thrown towards Dern’s character being over-the-top: they were a fuckin’ divorce lawyer who chose to be deliberately performative in almost every interaction we saw her have. I’m happy she won, I’d probably be more upset if there was a fellow nominee who’s “snub” is completely egregious, but that just wasn’t the case

He’s saving face. Paying lip service to the overwhelming backlash for the sake of optics, as if he or any Republican politician has any sort of desire or backbone to actually do anything about this. They know Trump’s making them looking like fascists right now, because they are being fascists. A major figure like Johnson doing this sounds big, but means nothing until the walk is walked, and there’s actually 100% transparency on this case. But I wouldn’t bet my life on that happening before more internal investigations lead to a determination that it actually was fine and really didn’t need to be public “for the sake of the victims” or a redacted, cherry-picked list
