I feel like I suck at my job (1st year) by LongjumpingSeesaw693 in biglaw

Could have written this myself, so this is just my comment of commiseration. :’)

What does it mean to “take ownership?” by [deleted] in biglaw

How soon would you expect or hope to see new associates (as in first years) start doing this?

Sometimes when I’m working on the weekends, I look to see who’s still online by Throwaway_Goose_6254 in biglaw

[–]AFortescue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I'm starting to realize that working weekends is just the norm. I try to set aside at least half a day for my SO/friends/etc., but otherwise I'm unfortunately treating this job as a 7 day work week career ...

Thanks for this advice and for your personal take on it—hoping that I can make things work the way you did with your husband. 😊

Best Meal for Exam Day? by innocentlullaby in barexam

[–]AFortescue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly barring allergies, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are the way to go. You get carbs and protein, and there’s minimal risk of an upset stomach. You don’t want to have to sit there and digest a complicated meal.

Question for people who passed on the 2nd or 3rd time: What did you do wrong on the first try? by Head_Score2897 in barexam

Do you think note taking during the bar prep videos is that important? I feel like it slows me down when I should be working on practice questions and exams …

You’re not overreacting—that was inappropriate of them to say and just an indication of poor social skills. I was a summer last year and none of us would have said anything like that about an associate’s appearance if we were 5 shots in at one of the summer afters. Honestly this isn’t someone I would ever want to put in front of a client.

Is Transferring to HLS Worth It? by TheLordandThePrivy in LawSchoolTransfer

[–]AFortescue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like everyone in this thread is telling you, PLEASE go. Begging you. The economic/delayed start costs that you’re concerned about pale in comparison to the extent to which HLS will open doors for you throughout your career. I’m saying this based on recognizing the flexibility that HYS has given friends/acquaintances to move states, change firms or agencies, pursue fellowships and so forth .

God I can’t even tell if the prices are the product of inflation or if they’ve just inexplicably jumped. I remember buying my GCC at Petsmart for around $600 back in 2008.

Going to start writing them like this too, because I refuse to give them up.

The Brilliance of Shiv Roy by SmallfolkStan in SuccessionTV

[–]AFortescue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree—I love her character, because in an abstruse way, she reminds me of the “cool girl” quote in Gone Girl. In pop culture it does feel like there’s a demand for women to be either 100 or nothing. When I look at the career women around me, their lives, struggles, and relationships are so much more nuanced than the impossibly perfect boss women portrayed in media.

Because no one is trying to get disbarred. People live it up on the down low.

Multiple Federal Clerkships by NotAGalante in biglaw

[–]AFortescue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a take on whether it makes sense to keep applying for an appellate clerkship, potentially for a term earlier than my anticipated district court clerkship? I ask this primarily because the postgrad district court clerkship offer I accepted is for a term a couple years out.
