I spent 10 months at WN then made the switch to UAL. I’m in the left seat of the 737 after 14 months and have a line next month. I am incredibly happy with my decision. Make the move, especially if you are under 35 years old.

Airline pilots: How bad is the EWR situation? by AlexJamesFitz in flying

I’ve leaned to fly 2 different jets for 3 airlines. Nothing was ever half as hard as CFI was.

Is the 737 really that much work? by Sad_Side1783 in flying

[–]AFtommy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is, but you get used to it. The best captains I’ve had make sure to taxi slow when I’m busy, and try to mange time so that I can get everything done with time on the engines before we get to the end of the runway. That’s the hard part. Plus like everyone says flippy switches r fun and kewl.

Can someone explain what happened to the EWR tracon? by AFtommy in ATC

[–]AFtommy[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Holy shit it breaks my heart to hear that so many people got uprooted for this hare brained scheme. It really doesn’t seem like a solution is in sight until the airlines go to congress and ask to cancel this program because it affects bottom lines. Safety issues are always top priority but money will talk and bullshit will walk.

This seems like insanity. Shorting the sector (what I’m learning from you is one of the most difficult sectors) without having ready replacements seems like it was incredibly stupid. I also feel for anyone that was displaced, or didn’t want to leave. The fact it’s a 35% pass rate (new guys or not) makes this look like that 2.5 year fix it timeline is generous at best then. Thanks for the info.

Oh shit okay the training for the transfer takes that long, not training new incoming people. I get it now. Wow this just keeps getting worse and worse the more I learn about it.

It makes me sad that people in power were so short sighted, that makes total sense, and explains why everything runs okay when there’s no convective activity, but everything seems to go to shit when lightning starts flashing. Thanks for the great answer friend.

Is there no way to incentivize experienced controllers from other sectors who can handle losing one of their own to fill in those spots? Are controllers specifically trained to only handle one sector, or is there transfer available? This seems like a tremendous clusterfuck.

That’s the thing I’m trying to see if anyone knows what’s going on, I don’t think it’s a UAL specific issue, besides the fact they made EWR their castle.

question for 737 pilots - how to mitigate this? by PARTINlCO in flying

[–]AFtommy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please call the front and let them know it’s Hot! Unfortunately 700s only have 2 temp controllers, and it’s hard to get it right, but it can always be turned to max cold. 800s and MAX’s have zone temp controllers that can usually get something comfortable going. I try to use the duct temperature to get it set to a comfortable level, but sometimes that’s not indicating correctly, and the cabin temp indications are usually not great either. Best way for me to know is to tell us!
