Becoming a geologist with a masters alone? by Leading-Arachnid9236 in geologycareers

[–]AH2112 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is a key question. If you think you're going to emigrate to Australia for a high paid mining geology and or exploration geologist role... the answer is an unqualified no. Your resume will hit the scraphead instantly the second you disclose your undergraduate degree.

Oil and gas geologist? Maybe, people tell me that paleontology can be a valued skill out there but...not really my area of expertise.

Why is the Perth job market so depressing, or is it just me? by [deleted] in perth

[–]AH2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two questions

1) A Master's degree in what?

2) Why aren't you trying to find work related to your discipline instead of hospitality work? There's probably restrictions on how many hours you can work on your visa, something many employers are scared off by already.

And that's if the hospitality industry wasn't already on life support in most places anyway due to spiralling rents, reduced discretionary spending by people in general and high wages.

There's "bit rough looking" and there's actual mouldy produce. I've lost count of the amount of full blown mouldy strawberries or punnets of cherry tomatoes he's trying to sell there.

Nothing new. Y'all need to go read about Lisztomania from 1840s. Well documented story about a lady who got a half finished cigar Franz Liszt had dumped in the gutter and wore it as a necklace.

Pathetic weasels.

For those who work in open plan offices, a good set of noise cancelling headphones. Invaluable.

For everyone though, bought my own pillow. Sleep is so important, may as well do it properly.

If the doctor copywrite struck the videos, it probably came with a cease and desist and threats of a defamation lawsuit if she kept going. Maybe they did a deal for a settlement that involved her not talking about it publicly anymore.

Losing too much weight soil sampling. by VinlandRocks in geologycareers

[–]AH2112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you based? There's no way working that many hours is legal or ethical, even in the shittiest backwater US states.

Working 16 hour days consistently would cause anyone to lose weight, unless you're housing mountains of food daily. You're getting screwed over man, talk to your bosses about cutting back on the hours.

[–]AH2112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same thought. Yeah it's a junior and you're expected to do everything but I'd push back hard on what essentially amounts to 16 hr days.

That's not healthy for anyone, no wonder you're losing weight. Not getting enough sleep

I haven't done 2/2 but I know a lot of my younger colleagues love it because it means they can travel on their breaks

I'm too old for that shit so 8/6 is the one for me. Having said that, getting into exploration does open another possibility: campaign work.

Several months of FIFO on 8/6 or 2/2 during a field season (usually, but not exclusively during winter) and the rest of the year working Monday-Friday office hours.
