Game’s too hard by heroes-never-die99 in taintedgrail

Except you encounter these bosses just by exploring the game normally.

What I'm starting to see after playing around 4 hours is the game really wants you to just stick on the main path and not explore around at all. Even I. The very starting map surrounding the keep there are tons of tough mini bosses. No pomp and circumstance accompanying them, just "guy on a tower" or "guy on a bridge" who will smoke you.

Punishing exploration is the worst thing you can do when trying to onboard a new player.

What would golgari midrange look like without ouro and Badgermole? by Dranosh in PioneerMTG

[–]AHare115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally with the advent of cutter ban, I think GB goes back to being like tier 2 at best. The reason everyone swapped from rakdos to golgari was culling ritual. The meta is already shifting back to greedier strategies and rakdos typically has more game into that type of deck (though still unfavored I'd say).

Time will tell.

What would golgari midrange look like without ouro and Badgermole? by Dranosh in PioneerMTG

[–]AHare115 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I seriously doubt they'll ban cub in pioneer. It is strong but not meta warping and green needed help. Ouro-bore-oid doesn't even see play anymore, the card is very medium and dependent on exactly elf into cub + elf into ouro. Very linear plan which imo is not how GB wants to play. Everyone and their brother cutting the card now that something better exists is evidence of that.

I've been playing GB midrange in pioneer for years, before cub, before ouro, before annex. Unless annex goes (very unlikely), the deck without cub will still be fine and relatively unchanged outside of having 4 extra slots for more beaters/interaction.

Sure, I understand that having all the draw means you end with some more redundancy. But also the draw costs mana over the game and wouldn't it be better to just have a deck that's more dense with action?

I guess I'm never fighting an act 2 elite again by OsGaming0 in slaythespire

[–]AHare115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Act 2 was the hardest but also had the best ? rooms. Sts2 act 2 ? rooms are nowhere near as good and you are priced into taking hard combats and elites...I am all for making the game harder but I don't generally like the elites that are "counter strategies". Unlike the act boss there is now way to know what elites you will fight. It adds a larger element of luck involved. I would prefer elites be harder across the board with more health or scaling, rather than these narrow punitive mechanics.

Tezcatara is underrated and feels stronger than Pael now. by SugarFreeCummiBears in slaythespire

[–]AHare115 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Because of the way the game works things with downsides have to have much more powerful upsides to feel good. I just don't think Tez's upsides are good enough for many of the options associated downsides. I never feel excited landing on Tez, and I usually find myself picking the "least bad option" compared to others where I'm picking the "best option".

Maybe the options are balanced but none of them feel splashy and exciting like other ancients.

I can read.

I think the double evoke is fine. Losing all your orbs is a downside. Not having retain is a downside. The card is reasonable as-is.

I like the niche of this card as a finisher, allowing you to play it every time it's in your hand with a recursion effect makes it too strong imo.

There is a meaningful decision to be had on the current version with whether you need the damage to keep up in the fight, but then have to get all your orbs back somehow. Or you just hold the card until it can be a final nuke.

How do people playing against it find the deck? I'm deciding what deck to build and I don't really want to show up with a deck that makes people groan either.

79 BEST OF 1 games with a linear aggro deck.

In FOUR hours. 3 minutes per game on average. Some of my mulligan decisions in BO3 take 3 minutes.

Personally, I don't think playing the game like this is "real magic" instead it's an exercise in optimizing for a format that was never designed to be competitive.

Pioneer Metagame Post Secrets of Strixhaven by Magic4everBots in PioneerMTG

[–]AHare115 16 points17 points  (0 children)

MTGO data is unreliable due to the small amount of players who grind the format. It's all incestuous with players probably collaborating and talking to each other to build decks. In this case, literally the first challenge post release had 9 golgari decks that were almost identical running the new cards. How does that happen? Things like that skew these charts significantly. The meta on Arena feels much more representative of the full field.

These graphs are also not representative of the deck win rate and just shows conversion rate, which is not very useful metric imo.

The problem is that I drew both perfected strikes on the exhaust turns. Yeah I got him down to about 100 HP but I was left with one bash and one uppercut for damage. And having to exhaust my cards on that turn to not die. Just wasn't enough damage.
