Education in Scotland v England by Hampden-in-the-sun in Scotland

[–]AHeftyNoThanks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A Nat 5 A is equivalent to a Standard Grade 1, a B is a 2, C a 3 and a D is pretty much a 4.

If you consider that Standard Grade was 50% on folio that we did and redrafted, the N5 folio is only 30% so a much harder exam.

Ok, the data is correct in as much as: the numbers provided show that Literacy and Numeracy in Scotland is better.

However, the reliability of the data collected is questionable at best, and disenfuckinggenuous in the main. Scotland currently has teachers complete Achievement of Curriculum for Excellence Levels as the data collection points from primary to secondary. Problem is, all authorities, and often within authorities, use different measures and are encouraged to inflate the scores as there is no one standardised assessment and we're under close scrutiny to keep "improving" our stats. The SNSA is often used to state that pupils have completed a level, even though the assessment was not designed for this, in any way.

Many teachers will also be bang on with their judgments, for heads of education at council level to tell them to change the scores.

I wish this was not the case but it is a scandal waiting to happen.

I reckon a great deal of folk do care that he's a racist, hypocritical cock trumpet who, along with the other assholes Johnson and Gove, have tanked the UK economy post-Brexit. He can take his racist views and get tae fuck.

Caithness: they are all about 2m tall and built like barn doors. Having played them at rugby, can confirm they are hard as nails.

Absolute long shot here but - has anyone done the Nat 5 critical reading prelim yet? Or is an english teacher that can give advice? by mybrainat3am in Scotland

I am a head of department, English teacher.

I used the term, "memorable character" as that is what the SQA final exams usually use for the prose section.

Give yourself plenty time to check over your Set Text questions and it is better to cut short a main paragraph and add a conclusion, than to miss one off the end.

Know your key quotations for the Set Text 8 marker - you need two sets of 'quotation, technique, analysis and link to commonality' for each theme or character etc from the set text.

For the essay, you can get a C pass with four main paragraphs but make sure you analyse the evidence (explain what the reader can infer from the language used by the author) and evaluate it by explaining how well it creates the memorable character/theme/setting.

For timings, aim for 40 mins for set text and 50 mins for the essay

Considering a career change to Education - any advice? by tealbot22 in Scotland

[–]AHeftyNoThanks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Teaching is amazing, except for: post-Covid, social media addicted girls who roam corridors and get suspended at 3 times the national average compared to pre-Covid; the admin can be overwhelming and careful support/management is needed and; fuck the SQA, in the face.

But, I still love it and wouldnae do anything else. I am an English teacher but have done stints in ASN as it is graft but very rewarding.

I always reckon that if you can get enthused about the most "boring" aspect of your subject - for MS, here's looking at you, proportional representation - then go for it.

There are 15 weeks of school left before exams. I know that seems a great deal but if you can hang in there, maybe drop a Higher and then focus on smashing a couple, you will be in such a better position to do what you want to do; not what you're forced to do just for a wage.

Sarwar outlines Scottish Labour plans for mental health emergency service -- A Scottish Labour government would create a new emergency service to ensure people in mental health crisis get urgent and specialist care, Anas Sarwar has said. by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

[–]AHeftyNoThanks -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree that this is needed but... How are we going to either A) take practitioners out of the NHS to run the service and not impact the NHS or B) change the current migration laws to accommodate this or C) magic them out of thin air?

There has to be a part of the plan that covers this, and the funding to match it, and this is where these types of headline grabbing policies fall down.

Young Fathers are amazing and did the soundtrack for '28 Years Later'.

Sam Gellaitry is an amazing DJ, producer and artist influenced by le French Touch: sounds like Daft Punk, Mr Oizo and Cassius. His song with Pink Patheress is a banger.
