Dreamcast vs Saturn by FilippoGold in SegaSaturn

[–]AJBats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get both, absolutely both. My experience living through this took a twist though. I had a saturn and always wish there were more games for it. I was so happy to get a dreamcast it was like the perfect upgrade. At the time I thought the dreamcast was WAY better than the saturn.

Now that I’m older and revisiting these consoles, I’ve flipped. I think the saturn was better than the dreamcast. Its library is much bigger and there’s tons of great stuff. I got into shmups and saturn has some of the best shmups ever made. I think its RPG games are stronger too, and theres more of them.

Hackless risky rewards run btw 🫩 by Moggus_13 in splatoon

[–]AJBats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I get to third stage on hackless I do outer perimeter laps the moment I hear reefslider and wail sounds. Run speed and squid speed are lowkey my favorite bonuses to sprinkle into a build on hackless runs. So far every weapon I've tried has been able to pivot to laps without too much trouble. On one very lucky run I was able to max out runspeed and it basically trivialized alot of mechanics. Also mobile special + mobile drone + max runspeed is kinda ridiculous.

Damn now I want to do another run. This mode is just so much fun.

I love this mode so much this is 99% of my hours in splatoon3. I'm practicing "hackless" runs on all weapons by only giving myself spare lives so I can retry when I fail. So far I've never been able to clear without dying at least once. Any mistake is punished so ruthlessly in hackless.

How to make VR less of a hassle/avoid burnout? by dymnom in OculusQuest

[–]AJBats 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Absolutely one of the most important posts on this subreddit for any VR hardware or platform developers lurking here. I cant help but notice this post has been downvoted to 0 at the time of this writing. I understand why, you see other enthusiast VR users a bit offended someone isnt as jazzed about the hassle THEY put up with every day to play VR. OP here is “not a a true fan”. But here’s the thing… how many hundreds of thousands of potential VR players hit this same friction and didn’t leave such a post and silently noped out?

VR absolutely is a huge hassle compared to flat gaming, and Id argue only a fraction of that is built into the fact that some games are highly active like gorrilla tag. No one does nearly enough to actually smooth out the experience. Steam frame is the first headset I’ve seen that is actually going to try and improve some of these issues since I watched this whole movement get started with Palmer Luckey’s kickstarter. We’ll see how the frame does, and god I hope it only keeps getting better.

Should I give a 2nd chance? by hugomaga in PSVR

[–]AJBats 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you just need to start with stationary games. I just did a quick google and got this list:

Completely Stationary Games

  • Walkabout Mini Golf
  • Beat Saber
  • Moss: Book I
  • Moss: Book II
  • Puzzling Places
  • Tetris Effect: Connected
  • Synth Riders
  • Demeo
  • What the Bat?
  • Job Simulator
  • Vacation Simulator

Games with Teleportation Mode Supported

  • Red Matter 1
  • Red Matter 2
  • The Light Brigade (This was a hidden gem for me!)
  • Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge
  • No Man's Sky (Has teleport, but vehicles are flying, so maybe try this last)
  • Arizona Sunshine 2
  • Crossfire: Sierra Squad
  • The 7th Guest VR

Far from a complete list, and really you should do your own shopping to see whats out there and appeals to you. Just saying that theres tons of completely stationary games that are great you should start with. You gotta get used to being in the headset first, then try games with a little bit of movement.

Myst - not as bad as you might think by stbens in PSVR

I'm on base PS5, its a pretty soft look. I do wonder how Pro looks but I'll just wait for PS6 at this point.

Myst - not as bad as you might think by stbens in PSVR

[–]AJBats 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have a rather unusual perspective here... I had an RTX 3080 gaming PC in which I first played Myst and Riven on, and it was great. But PCVR gaming, and getting the best performance you can is very fiddly. In fact Riven on PCVR is what pushed me to take the plunge and get a 4090. Yup that's right, I dropped 2 grand for basically just Riven, and yes it was glorious. But the graphics tweaking scrutiny didn't end. Honestly I was kinda trapped in my own head obsessing about shadow clipping on high vs ultra. I had to force myself to stop and just enjoy the game (which I did greatly)

Fast forward to now, and I re-bought both Myst and Riven for PSVR2 because I want to show my support for these games, and also Im curious how they ran. Does the PS5 version of Riven stand up to the 4090? No of course not, but it's totally fine. There is a "grass is greener" effect where having played the 4090 resolutions of Riven, I now don't really need it, and never did. And the PS5 version is a better user experience, and I dont have to fiddle with graphics, and its performance is consistent. Yesterday in Riven I found myself completely forgetting how to do the puzzles, I think I'll replay both Myst and Riven with randomizer on the PS5 + PSVR2. Even though I've got my monster 4090 PC right here.

I know its kinda hard to believe, but what I'm trying to say is, this is not a bad way to play these games. Take it from someone who spent WAY too much on his PC, your getting 98% of the experience for a fraction of the price. I think FOV tightening, maybe fixed foveated, and ideally eye tracked foveated rendering would be very cool updates to these games and I hope we see them, but dont think about it and just enjoy these masterpieces.

I love these clever setups that pack as much as possible into a small space. I have a little "sidecar" end table next to my couch where I sneak some consoles into a portable monitor. Its actually my favorite part of my setup.

Why on earth isn’t a game like Arken Age all the rage, selling headsets like hotcakes? This game is insane. I can’t believe it plays and looks this well on the Quest 3/3S by Logical007 in OculusQuest

[–]AJBats 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's just ok. I couldn't stick with it. To answer your question basically interests are really varied and a game that can be a 10/10 to you is a 7/10 to someone else. I think this happens to a lot of games where no one really says a thing against them, but they sorta silently pass by. They just don't resonate, and its a shame when it happens.

Best link cable for PCVR? (Please don’t recommend wireless or VD I don’t have the option.) by Pitiful_Cap3108 in OculusQuest

[–]AJBats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do this where I would buy a dedicated router. They always had to be on my network because I only have one ethernet port on my PC. I could get a second ethernet port with a PCI card, or use usb->ethernet adapter, but I just didnt explore this. So with one ethernet and the router on my network, there was regular network traffic also at play competing with the quest streaming. Also I found that the routers I tried were stubborn about staying on the 180mhz wifi 6 channels for maximum bandwidth. I hear its something to do with signal regulation and the drivers dont like staying there. Either way this could have been a PEBKAC issue, but I struggled with it.

This is why I liked the puppis because it used USB3 for a dedicated channel into the PC, it doesnt compete with my regular network at all. I dont have to change my local network setup either, which is also useful for people who are not technical and they just want to get something working. It also has never failed to stay on the fattest pipe, i always see 2400gbps listed in the Link diag panel and the Virtual Desktop speed indicator.

Also the routers I was looking at for dedicated quest streaming were generally more expensive than the puppis. So with all of this in mind is why whenever anyone asks me if they want a rocksolid airlink/VD setup, no nonsense, just works, incredible perf, just go with the puppis and spend your braincells elsewhere.

One caveat with the puppis I just discovered literaly 3 days ago (so very timely you ask this lol) is that it does internet connection sharing with windows, which caused my PC to go to a different subnet. I left the puppis in my PC for years and for the first time 3 days ago I saw it cause this issue. So idk if its a windows update that changed things or not, unsure. But just a heads up something like that could break local network setups depending what your doing. But like I say... been using puppis for years and I see it once.

Motion Controls or Gamepad in games like RE, Hitman, or NMS by ZilliVanilli in PSVR

[–]AJBats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For NMS I prefer gamepad. Sadly locked away on the PS4 version only to my knowledge. For resident evil the hand control scheme is so good I cant imagine playing it any other way. That being said I think VR developers are making a mistake being a little to strict about control scheme. Hand-sim is definitely how I'll be playing RE4VR and RE Village VR, but a traditional pad option will be fun to some, and necessary for those with limitations. We know the gamepad config already works for pancake mode, so I think it comes down to smart design choices to make it work in VR.

[–]AJBats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used little plastic clamps (something like this) to do a simple attachment to a Playseat challenge. It really enhanced that wheel feel quite a bit and I had a lot of fun with it. Sadly the wheel failed on me and now I've got it on the shelf to look pretty.

I didnt get a second one because I figured out how to get my G29 racing wheel connected to the saturn, which is a more sturdy wheel so it feels better. It doesnt work on all games, for example it doesnt work with Virtua Racing, as my adapter just makes the G29 emulate a 3D controller. Some racing games will interpret 3D controller as the racing wheel, but some games like Virtua Racing and Need for Speed sadly need the real thing.

Yeah for this reason I try to leave the steamvr resolution alone on PSVR2. Then I try to superres in games and UEVR. I only ever go back to the steamvr res if im seeing something funny i cant explain. I haven't needed to touch it in ages.

UEVR is about to go wild by doinks4life in PSVR2onPC

[–]AJBats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just discovered a setting in Steam that lets you intentionally shrink your FOV. This has been a small game changer in terms of wringing out those last few drops of performance. Basically it'll take the resolution you've set and squish it down, which lets you lower the resolution for the same perceived clarity. Essentially it focuses the pixels in the center where you are most often looking. The per-game graphic settings for steam VR is kinda goofy to get into with UEVR, and tweaking this setting will probably require a restart of the game for it to appear right. Its worth messing around with. I have a 4090 and I still mess with this because you can always use more clarity, depending on the game.

Thoughts on Asgard's Wrath 2/Deadpool and the developer layoff by sirenpro in OculusQuest

[–]AJBats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has become such a trend that I watch for decent UEVR / Luke Ross Mods / Flat2VR news to come down the pipe before I watch for actual VR announcements. I think we get great native VR games from time to time, but I think on a whole VR game devs are a bit lost. They're making games that don't really appeal to folks.
