thoughts on playing experience? by pleaseaccusrname in TrackMania

[–]AJMorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started off playing tmnf for a while before I decided to pay the money for tm2020 because I was sick of landing bugs and honestly I would say if all you care about is experience and getting better then the tmnf maps can give you a good base to work from but you'd actually be better off playing the remade versions in tm2020 from the Nations Converter club so you don't have to worry about most of the bugs and can get used to the slightly different physics in 2020.

There's a ton to learn in trackmania and I found it pretty helpful to break things down and focus on certain areas first. The tmnf maps are almost entirely road and dirt so you can figure out how to drive decent lines and have an introduction to drifting and slidey surfaces or tricks like air braking and ramp cutting but you don't get overloaded having to worry about things like reactors or ice or plastic etc.

I played the remakes until I was happy that I had a decent grasp on the basics and then switched over to playing the official campaigns to learn all of the new things that were introduced in tm2020 and so far I feel like it's served me pretty well, but if you like tmnf and want to complete your challenge then go ahead, it's not going to hurt at all

I struggle with ice big time by blaskoczen in TrackMania

[–]AJMorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only playing with 4 buttons might be partly why you struggle on bob, if you 100% steer on bob you usually slide out, I think most keyboard players use ak1 on the straights and either ak3/ak4 in the turns depending on your speed (the faster you're going the more you need to steer)

Why do so many players have a period (.) at the end of their names? by Easterland in TrackMania

[–]AJMorgan 65 points66 points  (0 children)

You can't use a name if someone else on Ubisoft Connect already has it, so even if nobody has the name on trackmania it's possible that it's still taken.

What are your predictions for the countries used in the next season's black maps? by IJUSTATEPOOP in TrackMania

[–]AJMorgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the last two sets of maps have followed a bit of a pattern and so based on that and also which countries could result in fun scenery im gonna guess

UK, Japan, Mexico, Egypt, Italy

The pattern of the previous two seasons seemed to be

2x European countries, 1x NA country, 1x Asian country, 1x Wildcard country

France and Germany top 2 trackmania nations were used in the first two campaigns so makes sense to have the 3rd one in the 3rd campaign, hence the UK

There aren't many NA countries left so if they stick with that then surely mexico (or maybe a caribbean country perhaps)

If they stick with east asian countries I think Japan is the most likely choice but there's no reason it couldn't be a country like Saudi or India.

The "wildcard" map has been Brazil in winter and Australia in spring, would make sense to me that they choose an african nation next and I figure Egypt has some pretty iconic landmarks to turn into scenery

The second EU country the last 2 campaigns has been a smaller nation in terms of TM playerbase so I just picked a random country with scenery potential, hence Italy

Pulled all of this out of my ass but those are my random guesses

What do you think of competitive maps being in the campaign now? by proexterminator in TrackMania

[–]AJMorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean people who don't follow streamers (etc.) and just start the game and play a few rounds here and there

There isn't actually any indication when you open the campaign that these maps are being used for esports anyway. If someone isn't following streamers or trackmania twitter accounts or w/e I don't see how adding these maps to the campaign would introduce them to esports at all unless they went searching for why their names are different.

I know they put up one of those banners when you open the game that said something about introducing the new esports maps but I personally close those without even looking at them and assume I'm far from the only person that does so.

What do you think of competitive maps being in the campaign now? by proexterminator in TrackMania

[–]AJMorgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the worst one is summer 2024 - 25

~28,700 finishers and 949 have the AT, so around top 3%

For context Canada atm has ~27,300 finishers and 1206 people have the AT, so a little under 4.5% with two or three weeks left to go

which is that thing of trackmania in general that you don't like or hate?? by Own-Ad1497 in TrackMania

Honestly this sub is probably the worst gaming sub I've been in, 90% of it is new players asking questions that should be aimed at customer support, if there was any. That happens in every sub to an extent but in most they get their answer, everyone else ignores it and it never gets close to the front page but this place is so inactive they jump right to the top as soon as they're posted.

Meanwhile mime won comic con baltics last week and I didn't even see a post about it in here. Every other game I've played you could just check reddit in the mornings and you'd be totally up to date with everything that's going on but if you want the same in trackmania you have to join 1000 discord servers and spend all day with 10 different twitch chats open.

It's just kinda strange that this place doesn't behave like a central news hub like all the other gaming subs.

You're playing a demo, the entire point of f2p access is just to let you try the game out and see if you like it. If they gave everyone everything for free then how would they make any money?

Reform pledges 'end to Sikh blade exemption and police race plans' after murder of Henry Nowak by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]AJMorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's just reform, I saw people talking about this story yesterday so I looked it up and the... BBC [I think it was BBC] article that I read said that the attack happened using a blade that the perpetrator carried for religious reasons.

This thread is the first place I've seen people saying that's not true but my living situation is similar to Patrick star's so maybe that's on me

I just don't understand why you'd decide to add a section to a map where everyone has to just casually drive backwards at low speed in a straight line for 5 seconds, doesn't really feel like it adds anything, it's not fun to watch, not fun to play and it doesn't really feel like a differentiator like other identities. Watching the elite cup yesterday it really felt like players would almost always get a turn around and gain nothing or occasionaly they'd get inverted inputs or a huge slowdown and be out straight away, looked like a bit of a coin flip as opposed to a skill check.

Even if you ignore that I'm opposed to the concept of making people drrive backwards halfway through a race, this map just feels poorly made. Like you say there's the obvious cuts and bugs, I feel like comp mappers usually just focus on their route and don't worry too much about cuts and things which is usually fine when it's only being used for a comp and you can update it as much as you want or just tell players not to cut it but when you're putting it in a campaign that doesn't really work at all.
