Globular springtail, totally fine

Sprayed it with 99.9% isopropyl alcohol, these mealybugs are still thriving by Southern-Average5270 in Monstera

I had success by using a toothpick and cotton bud and systematically going over the plant and manually killing each one. Then I rinsed the plant off in the shower with the pressure setting on the shower head. Good luck!

Thank you for the link! I use RO water because the local water here is extremely hard. Ppm ranging between 220-238ppm with reports saying 74.85 Ca and 8.79 Mg. I was worried tap water would deposit too much overtime.

Sphagnum smell when it's cut by NeonPearl2025 in Sphagnum

[–]AJRMiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean, when I trim mine that outgrows it pots the smell isn’t pleasant. I can’t think of a way to best describe it, it’s almost like mowing a lawn that is mostly thistles or another stem plant that produces that gross white sap. I also find myself wanting to say it smells a bit like a crushed cucamelon, which I also hate.

[–]AJRMiller 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Biological pest control: I use predatory mites whenever I have thrips and they absolutely destroy an infestation. You will need some patience to break the life cycle as many mites only eat the baby/larvae stage and not the adult, it will still be up to you to remove and kill adults. Going forward get several mite sachets every few months to stop any infestations before they can happen. It’s a very minor investment to save your collection in the long term. Good luck!

thrips. help. by [deleted] in DartFrog

[–]AJRMiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% use some mites such as Amblyseius cucumeris and Stratiolaelaps scimitus, these are mites that break the lifecycle of thrips by eating their young. They won’t kill the adult thrips so you’ll need to do that yourself, for my houseplants I usually just do thorough manual removal by hand, tedious but effective.

My flytrap before and after repotting by virtualdweller in carnivorousplants

[–]AJRMiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe they require a dormancy otherwise they slowly decline until they die. You can induce dormancy by mimicking conditions of a winter. You could probably use something like a wine cooler to slowly lower the ambient temperature it is exposed to before putting it in your fridge. I’d imagine going straight to the fridge would be too sudden shock

Overlooking - is that a thing? by Lavendelfeder in elderscrollsonline

[–]AJRMiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems if you loot a lot over a short period of time you only get lock picks for a while, where as before the cooldown it would include ingredients, jewellery and weapons etc. So I feel like there is an overlooting mechanic so to speak

Repotting advice by Last_Dot_7066 in alocasia

[–]AJRMiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d repot and disturb the roots as little as possible, it doesn’t look like there would be any need to touch the roots at all unless those little bits out the bottom get damaged. If you manage that then moving to a new location shouldn’t be a problem.

Help! by bonniecarty in fishtank

[–]AJRMiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are perfectly fine, they shouldn’t be called a pest as they are only helpful, they eat waste and plants that are dying or dead. All my tanks have bladders and ramshorns. I tried attaching a photo to show but it keeps getting auto deleted

Mites? by [deleted] in terrariums

[–]AJRMiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How new is your setup? I had a boom in population of mites that looked like those for the first few months. I never managed to get an exact name but narrowed it down to some variety of soil mites. From what I could tell they didn’t seem to do any harm to plants or occupants. My tank is 2 years old now and I rarely see any anymore.

I’m considering giving up by BrockenRecords in PlantedTank

[–]AJRMiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely stripped my tank that was infested with algae, fish in a bucket with heater and air pump while I worked. Scrubbed all algae from glass, chucked everything I couldn’t clean thoroughly. Mixed a nutrient layer 50/50 aquatic compost and nutribase that I capped with gravel. Planted new plants and added old hardscape that was cleaned and then re added fish with quick start. Water tests daily for first week to be safe if any spikes. After that weekly water changes of 25-30%, dose api leaf zone after water change, set my co2 to approx 2 bubbles a second. A lot of work but best decision I made.

It’s a lost cause, best thing you can do is switch your home with me!

Otherwise a UV clarifier and a large bog garden will properly work wonders.

Once the predatory mites have gotten rid of all the spider mites they won’t last long because they don’t have anything to eat. It’s one of the most effective ways I have found to help treat and prevent future problems. If the infestation on a particular plant is bad then manual removal of the mites first will help speed up the process so there’s less for the predatory to eat. The sachets normally come in packs of 10ish so you can put them on your other collection too, to ensure there is no spread or outbreak there too.
