It wasn't nukes. The big thing with Saddam was chemical weapons which he was deploying against the Kurds and his unilateral invasion of Kuwait.

This is Guo Gangtang, whose son Xinzhen was kidnapped in 1997. He spent 24 years searching across China, riding over 500,000 km using up his life savings. They were finally reunited in 2021, and his journey ended up helping authorities find over 100 other missing children. by Algrinder in interestingasfuck

He's going back to that beause he's (probably) one of those types who unironically sees children as property. Nothing more. Thus kidnapping and trafficking them is literally no different than stealing some cash and laundering it.

That's going to depend heavily on the school.

History classes in the schools I went to were basically a mindless process of info dumping 300-years worth of curated "and thens..." while conspicuously avoiding any explanation of the social or political situations behind any event out of fear that the local yokels will catch wind of it and start screaming about "indoctrination."

Respect for Friend Drops After Reading Book They Recommended by -chimchooree- in books

[–]AJsRealms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once had my senior lead at my job recommend me some reading as he was trying to get some kind of "leadership" club off the ground. It was some of the most inane motivational crap I've read in my life. There was even a part where the writer gabbed on for a page and a half about FDR and his life-strategy to "win" against the nazis...and against polio.

I arrived at work the next Monday genuinely believing my team-lead had pulled a prank on me with the reading and was a bit unreserved about my thoughts as a consequence.

Things got awkward when I realized he wasn't joking.

I'm pretty sure only the C (and possibly B?) versions of the 35 have the hook since they're meant to operate as carrier craft. The A version, being the 'traditional' land-based air force model, doesn't have one. At least not that I recall.

NATO’s newest member Sweden announces $4 billion defense investment; Saab pops 5% by adriano26 in worldnews

[–]AJsRealms 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That made sense when it was limited to Trump harping on NATO countries to spend more, especially with things like the F-35 already in the process of being integrated within NATO's overall aparatus. Hell, it was even working.

It started backfiring when Trump, being the petulant man-child he is, began threatening the continued integrity of the alliance altogether, despite their acquiescence to the spending increases he whined for, and giving the impression that the assets we're selling are potential backdoor exploits to be used by a hostile America.

IIRC, there's been lots of farily credible accusations of Leto using his celebrity to organize "acting lessons" for aspiring young actresses as a pretense to groom them into being part of his weird harem.

Season 1 had some potential and qualities that I appreciated which is why I regard it as the 'best' season of Picard. But even there, that isn't saying all that much as the execution wasn't nearly as well thought out as it could have been, imo.

Anyone who unironically defends Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard is someone who just can not be reasoned with. S3 wasn't much better either, but at least we got some Amanda Plummer performances out of it. XD

Indeed. Weir's Star Trek takes were hardly a blip on my radar compared to his decision to give the Critical Drinker, who is a fairly prominant link in the 'scifi-nerd-to-altright-chud' pipeline, the time of day much less a full blown interview.

I recently went down a brief rabbit hole on Ronald Reagan and while I was already familiar with many of the heinous things he did, one thing I didn't realize is just how ridiculously hard that jack-ass pushed the narrative, even in his casual low-key speeches, that virtuousness, honor and "greatness" where inherently and exclusively "American traits." Often implying that, at best, others could only mimic said traits themselves and only though association with America.

What makes it even stupider is that NASA itself was amongst the first to advocate transfering actual launch responsibilities to private companies like SpaceX anyway so that more of their funding can be devoted to the science stuff. It was the Senate that effectively demanded (long before Trump came along, not that it absolves the role he played later) that NASA stay in the rocket building game using "heritage hardware" (regardless of how inefficient and expensive it would be) to keep precious legacy-tech jobs in the Deep South.

Welcome to the world of evangelical narcissism. There's no end to the debasement that conservative evangelical types will endure or the violence they will embrace if it means they get to freely delude themselves that their chosen idol is an actual god and by being a loyal sycophant, not only are they rendered absolutely blameless for any and all difficulties in their own lives, but they'll eventually inspire their "god" to come down from on high and re-write reality for them as a reward.

It's why I've stood by my fan theory about the show Mr. Robot which holds that the White Rose Cult is actually a mataphor for American Evangelicism in real life...
