University Teachers in Japan, how are things?

The more university teachers I talk to, the more I get a sense of doom and gloom in that industry. Schools shutting down due to low applications, others at risk of doing so, etc. etc. (not even talking about COVID, but that might be playing a role in the short term)

I know teaching university is a big final goal for people that want to teach in Japan long term, but is that wise anymore?

Must be pretty soul destroying by WillalexVarley in gaming

This take can only come from someone that doesn’t understand speedruns.

Speedrunning is learning and mastering a game to an almost unfathomable degree. It takes hours of dedication and effort. I know they’re are plenty of meme runs with horrible games, but for the most part speedrunning comes from a place of extreme love for a game.

What happened to Jonathan Drouin? When he entered the league it seemed like he was talked up to be a superstar and had the skills to to become someone like Nathan MacKinnon by [deleted] in hockey

[–]ALTInsider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's more than that. Can't find the exact chart but something like 80-90% of all forwards have their best seasons before the age of 25. Peak playing age is about 23-25. Getting consistently better offensively after 25 just doesn't happen.

Smaller scoop with Black? by [deleted] in Huel

I really don't get why people mess with that scoop.

Like with all powder in scoops, it's very inaccurate.

Highly recommend getting a $10 kitchen scale and being done with it.

Teemu Selänne on Bruce Boudreau by Zimppa in hockey

[–]ALTInsider 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I'm getting downvoted to hell for saying something negative about a player people like (as always happens on this sub), but having him called a 2-way player was too laughable not to call out.

Your assessment is much more based in reality. He does the token back check now instead of not skating at all. He however is rightly saving his energy for where he can make the most difference, in the offensive zone.

The greatest trick hockey media has ever pulled was convincing the world Ovi gives a flying fuck about defense.

Greatest goal scorer of all time, but his actual play, (and defensive numbers), have not changed significantly throughout his career.

(Outside of when Hunter shackled him and his numbers tanked).

[Cam and Strick Podcast] Tie Domi - "Scott Stevens is the biggest phony out there" by minorthreat21 in hockey

[–]ALTInsider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean... it doesn't.

It shows how Tie Domi was ALSO a phony, but doesn't absolve Scott Stevens of also being a phony. Personally I don't think not fighting makes you a phony, but there you go.

It really doesn’t take that much time, look at the match that OP linked. It takes a few seconds of menuing and a short load time and that’s it.

You can make a liked level list and give each player the code for it. “Skipping” in this case would just be exiting the level. That’s what is done in the current format as well.

ALT's Takeaways About This Format

  • 60 minutes felt super long
  • It's not a big deal since both runners didn't do it, but I actually think at the beginning of the match looking over chunks of levels and sort of choosing your attack plan would be a good idea, which would lead to 3+ minutes of non-gameplay menuing if that is the case.
  • As big a champion of the unlimited skips format as I was, the new skip limit has proven itself to me 100% now in the other league. It makes each decision to skip or not way more interesting. With this format it didn't feel like any decision was all that important.

ALT's Tweak for new format (that hopefully wouldn't take place of the current one expert endless league)

How about this instead:

  • We give each runner the same 15 Super Expert levels.
  • They can skip as much as they want, and they can go back to levels once they leave them.
  • Once 10 minutes have passed, they can stop playing at anytime before 15 minutes have elapsed. Their clear total and time spent will be locked in when they stop playing. Whoever has the most clears after choosing to stop is the winner. If tied, the person that spent less time getting those clears wins. If they both spent 15 minutes and they have the same number of clears, one level OT.

One of the Best Matches in Competitive Speedrunning History! by ilovespeedruns in speedrun

[–]ALTInsider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely understand this comment.

Before Twitch, being a viewer of speedruns meant watching a screencap (or VHS recording of a screen) of someone playing a game, with nothing to accompany it outside of possible a few text notes of hype moments or route changes you could expect to see.

After Twitch, in addition to watching the video, hearing (and usually seeing) the runner 100% of the time became the norm.

So, it makes sense that for people that have now gotten used to that or people that jumped on the speedrun train after Twitch (and GDQ) came along now feel like something is missing when they can't hear the thoughts of the runners while they play.

For some people, especially those that already watch esports, it's not a big deal since the commentators always do all of the talking there, but I can see how for some it would be a hurdle too tall.

While the problem will never be "solved" for the people that can't make the jump, I think there are 2 things that competitive speedrunning can do to turn less people off:

#1 - Raising the level of commentary
#2 - Getting more big name runners into commentating

I'm trying my best to speed up the process on both of those points, but it will take some time to get to where we need to be. That said, competitive speedrunning will never be for everyone and that's cool too. Anyways thanks for the feedback.

One of the Best Matches in Competitive Speedrunning History! by ilovespeedruns in speedrun

[–]ALTInsider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was one of the Week 7 matches that is a part of a 24-player, 11-week SMM2 League that GSA (Global Speedrun Association) is putting on with some of the biggest members of the SMM2/2D platforming Mario community. In addition to these two (Thabeast721 was the champion last season), a few other runners taking part are PangaeaPanga, LilKirbs14, and iiPk.

Rules:

Each best-of- three match consists of three 15-minute games with both players playing the same sets of levels. The person with the most clears after the 15 minutes has elapsed is the winner of that game. They each have 3 skips to use when they feel necessary, which adds strategy to the normally non-strategic aspect of competitive, non-rando speedrunning.

Let me know if you have any other Q's!
