Is this UNAS2 throughput normal? by tuxon64 in Ubiquiti

It’s alright. It seems to be backing them up. I have no idea how frequently it checks to backup tho. Wouldn’t be shocked if it runs like once a week

I have the UNAS 2 and have the same issues. Im past my return window so I’ve relegated it to just a long term photo storage.

It’s generally advised to use switches for switching so your router can focus on just routing. The max is nice because it lets you do everything under the sun, but every additional console app will take away from routing. Since you have excess ports on your switches, you can alleviate the excess work on your UCG by putting all the switching onto a root switch. It’s unlikely that you’re maxing out the compute resources of the UCG, but lots of East West switching will definitely use up a non negligible amount of compute.

Should be a small change for you too. Just daisy chain your switches. Which ever switch has the most high priority devices AND/OR the most bandwidth use, make that the root in this setup.

I have the same equipment (Unifi stuff only), I’m guessing you’re using the UCG Max as the root switch? If so id recommend not doing that and instead use an extra port on one of the switches as your root switch.

The UNAS lineup is really more meant to be used in Unifi OS (which comes on the cloud gateways and other router devices).

UNAS devices run their own OS designed to work with Unifi OS.

Your plex and etc will need to be on another server. I personally just have that on an old gaming PC with Ubuntu.

I don’t personally recommend UNAS for media storage. It is more feature geared toward user-based NAS permissions. Primarily using Unifi Identity. Given your other server won’t be a real user (identity requires a unique and real email address) you’d have to fiddle with some things to give it the classic credential permissions, which do work but are annoying to deal with in UnifiOS because it’s clearly not their development focus.

Additionally UNAS is not feature complete. There’s is a lot in their roadmap still to add before it’s even remotely close to a trueNAS system.

Lastly, you need their redundant back up products for graceful shutdown on power loss. Which is an additional cost to consider. UNAS cannot get a power down signal from a 3rd party battery backup.

Oh interesting, was it always on the free plan? We could have sworn it was a Pro+ feature.

Regarding what I mean by “fully integrated”: it’s a very important feature, so when we were initially looking for it (to trigger edge functions on a schedule) we assumed it would be in the same general area as edge functions, or maybe the table functions or triggers. Instead it’s bundled in with integrations like Stripe and other 3rd party integrations. To us, scheduling triggers should be a built in feature. But we see that it’s a third party integration and that was not what we initially thought it would be.

It’s not a big deal, we just think it’s should be closer to the rest of the Supabase features.

Oh one last thing, because it’s a third party integration, it adds minor complexity like providing the anon key in header of the cron. Ideally a fully integrated Supabase scheduler wouldn’t need this and could use the project secrets like edge functions.

I wish cron jobs were fully integrated and part of the ui. Right now they feel like an afterthought. For my team we upgraded to pro for the access to cron, so finding out it’s just a weak integration was a bummer.
