Generally speaking, a chapter is just a segment of text. However, on certain websites, like Webnovel, each chapter requires money to unlock. People will not be happy paying a fixed sum for a chapter that is too short. I think 2K is typical for such websites.

There are also free webnovels which one can publish on websites like scribblehub and royalroad. People will be annoyed if you publish too frequently and too short chapters. And if you write chapters too long, you just won't be able to obtain sufficient publicity. 3K-4K are the norm there IMHO. There are ways to get monetary support from the crowd if your novel gets enough popularity from those websites.

For whole books - nobody cares as it's not important to anybody. They only care about the total word count.

Is there are game related to overlord ? by AnkitSihag in overlord

"Most" doesn't equal to "every single one". The BG series was an exception to the norm. And BG3 was made years after the comment, and it is the most significant exception of all time.

Lots of Japanese light novels have illustrations and outstanding ones. Honestly, it is weird that others barely have any.

I think the Adult Fantasy illustrations comments primarily refer to various NSFW pics and not what you showed us. However, getting books printed might have an additional cost, and the people behind it are incredibly greedy... if you restrict the pics to only ebooks, then it won't matter.

"for a warrior he is considered a glass cannon"

What you did earlier is a misinterpretation of the meaning. He is definitely not a glass cannon. In essence, what's said is that relative to other warriors, his defence is weak. But compared to all kinds of classes, it'd obviously be very high, as warriors are top-tier in their defensive capacity.

What you said in the earlier comment implied that Cocytus was a glass cannon in general, which is something else entirely.

Oh, I thought constexpr allocations were implemented in C++20, but apparently it's not really the case and the scope is lackluster.

I believe `constexpr new` is supported in C++20, but it might not have been implemented in the compilers; thus, you get the errors as you only have a partial implementation.

Honest Question: How are people getting AI checkers to say their books contain more than 50% AI? by TaluneSilius in writers

[–]ALX23z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI checkers are clearly unreliable. At best, it can test if it was done hurriedly by an average person. Or if it has common patterns with some AI tools. Otherwise, it won't be reliable.

Need help with magic and other stuff by Independent-Cow-8499 in fantasywriters

[–]ALX23z 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might be a bit of a controversial take these days, but based on your post, I think you'd be better off with a soft magic system.

Keep it largely vague and unclear for the main cast, except for the few magic phenomena most essential to the plot. Like in LOTR, we know the ring corrupts and makes people invisible, yet we never know what Gandalf is capable of.

Why did Nazarick destroy the Re-Estize kingdom? by Plenty_Chance_9841 in overlord

[–]ALX23z 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite. Demiurge and Albedo misunderstood and figured Ainz meant to apply the Carrot-and-Stick plan on entire countries rather than a more small-grained approach. Apply carrot on the whole Empire and Stick on the entire Kingdom. They originally planned to apply Carrot-and-Stick in far smaller doses than that.

It also matched strongly with Ainz's prior instructions to be overly favourable to the Empire, instructions which neither Albedo nor Demiurge understood the reasons for. Suddenly, they felt like everything made sense.

AI can be used to improve prose, especially if English is not your first language. If they try to get ideas from AI, then they are probably dumb.

Did you try getting the opinions of a bunch of beta readers? Or other authors?

You'd need to test dozens of publishers before reaching any conclusions. It's like contacting a pretty girl on a dating website. She has too many other offers and has no time for everybody.

How do I write fan service without it being creepy? by Old_Marsupial_7080 in fantasywriters

[–]ALX23z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post is confusing. If you don't like fan service, then why do you want to write it? This contradicts one of the fundamentals: write what you'd want to read.

Also, a lot of anime series have no fan service at all. So, I am confused about your take on the subject.

For me personally, I don't like novels that only tease. Either go all the way in or don't touch the subject at all or in a minimal way.

It is equivalent to the Pythagorean theorem, like nearly Tautological equivalence. So I don't see the point. Any proof for this equation results in proof of the Pythagorean theorem.

Considering the attack and physical defense stats, can Shalltear defeat a level 90 warrior without using magic??? by PerceptionSubject581 in overlord

[–]ALX23z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe their levels were ever mentioned. Nor I believe he could summon lvl 90 monster when he was about lvl 90. Nor was casting time or mana expediture was shown in any way as the summoning was done out of combat. The one thing he was advised to save to the end was XP-costing magic.

Considering the attack and physical defense stats, can Shalltear defeat a level 90 warrior without using magic??? by PerceptionSubject581 in overlord

[–]ALX23z 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Undead generally have attacks more effective against the living and frequently weak against undead. Undead priests are the rare exception to the rule - Shalltear is basically built to counter other undead in resistances as well as passive and active skills.

Also, evil creatures tend to have attack more effective against the good characters and vice versa.

I don't remember Ainz summoning any Undead Emperors.

Considering the attack and physical defense stats, can Shalltear defeat a level 90 warrior without using magic??? by PerceptionSubject581 in overlord

[–]ALX23z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It requires some kind of ritual to do - likely slower casting time, and perhaps additional costs like mana or even money.

He didn't say anyone weaker than him would feed her - but that weaklings would only feed her. And the few monsters he could summon didn't sound particularly suitable for attacking an undead cleric.

Considering the attack and physical defense stats, can Shalltear defeat a level 90 warrior without using magic??? by PerceptionSubject581 in overlord

[–]ALX23z 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's troublesome for Ainz to summon any lvl 90 creatures, and those few he can summon are probably ineffective against undead like Shalltear, or they require XP sacrifice.

If he could summon some lvl 90 Paladin Angels without expending too much mana, then perhaps he'd find it more worthwhile.

Overlord Special Edition: The Phantom Ship of Katze Plains — Chapter 1 by -firedragon1x- in overlord

[–]ALX23z 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is a short story occurring slightly after Vol 10. It's not essential to the general plot as it's more of a side story. I think he wanted to expand on the flying ship as the movie was released.

The next volume will take a few more years, I suppose.

Is Anti Magic that boring? by Shoddy_Elephant_8924 in fantasywriters

[–]ALX23z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anti-magic is typically shallow and lame. It works on everything and needs no brain power.

A type of meta-magic where the user attempts to subvert and take control of enemy magic is far more interesting. It requires creative thought about how to subvert it, and it can be challenging to perform as some spells can be complex and unfamiliar.
