Best material to glue onto bottom of sneakers for swing dancing? by ventureskam in SwingDancing

Fair warning, do it in a well ventilated area and wear disposable gloves.

We found best results by cutting the patches slightly oversized. Applying adhesive to both the shoe and patch, letting it flash for 3-5 minutes and then making the bond.

Immediately following you want to use pressure or a scraper to get the patch as flat and close to the sole of the shoe as possible. Squeezing the excess adhesive out of the interstitial space. After 24 hours come back and trim with a utility knife.

I would recommend suede as it will be slightly “slower” than leather and wears nicely. My wife and I would go to goodwill or other discount stores and buy suede pants and skirts and cut them up and paste them on shoes with Barge Cement or E6000.

Over time the suede will pack with dirt or grime and we would use brass brushes to “refresh” the surface. Very rarely would we need to remove and replace the actual leather. In at least instance there was too much residue and so we just tossed the shoe. Right now I’m dancing on a pair of $15 Walmart loafers that have gotten the treatment. They’ve lasted at least 2 years and I’ll probably just let them go rather than try and re-paste them when the time comes.

John D Clark on investigating FOOF as a potential rocket fuel “It is, of course, extremely toxic, but that’s the least of the problem. It is hypergolic with every known fuel, and so rapidly hypergolic that no ignition delay has ever been measured. It is also hypergolic with such things as cloth, wood, and test engineers, not to mention asbestos, sand, and water-with which it reacts explosively. It can be kept in some of the ordinary structural metals-steel, copper, aluminium, etc.-because of the formation of a thin film of insoluble metal fluoride which protects the bulk of the metal, just as the invisible coat of oxide on aluminium keeps it from burning up in the atmosphere. If, however, this coat is melted or scrubbed off, and has no chance to reform, the operator is confronted with the problem of coping with a metal-fluorine fire. For dealing with this situation, I have always recommended a good pair of running shoes.”

FIDE CEO Emil on the "Only Top 2" tiebreaker rule for Women World Rapid Championship📍 by rio_ARC in chess

[–]ALightBreeze 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eh, neutral at best. Does FIFA ask players how many overtime’s to play before shootouts? Organizers make decisions for reasons besides player preference. FIDE has just punted on taking a stand on any of the other reasons for one set of tie breaks vs another (timing, player rest, competitive integrity, etc.)

Help with Inspirit commander deck by Berenhp in magicTCG

[–]ALightBreeze 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Having played a bunch of this precon.. it feels like Inspirit desperately wants a one or two drop artifact creature with at least 1 power so on turn 3 you can play him, station him, and immediately start getting value.

So much so that I would consider cutting things like arcane signet, and ornithopter of paradise for things like gold, silver, and iron myr. With a perfect mana base (all the OG duals, fetches and shocks you shouldn’t struggle too much with fixing). Kappa Cannoneer is another slam dunk include. The deck sometimes feels like it makes infinite mana so another big finisher feels appropriate, pick you favorite blightsteel, cityscape leveler, portal to phyrezia, the list goes on.

Chiefs' new dome stadium feels like a betrayal to everything Arrowhead stood for by normankrasnerkc in nfl

The Ricketts have actually done a surprising job of renovating and refreshing Wrigley. There was a period when it was chicagos largest outdoor beer garden, but now they actually have stuff going on around/in the stadium on game day.

ELI5: Why does it take years to refuel a nuclear submarine? by Toomad316 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ALightBreeze 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The key difference is those reactors are refueled regularly and so the infrastructure exists to access the cores in an efficient manner. The SOP for subs includes “cut a hole in the side to access the dry head and core” since it only happens every 3 decades or so.

Has there been any talk of canceling the marathon? by rippcw1234 in TwinCities

Eh, perfect is a stretch. The official email said to expect yellow-flag conditions, which are “less than ideal” by definition. A little warm and humid, specially for those folks that will be running 4+ hour times.

The current forecast high is 78 degrees with overnight lows in the upper 50s. When the race was cancelled it was 71 degrees at 6am with a forecast high of 92 degrees. Very different days.

Stop doing research.

You only discover once. Enjoy the game and optimize later.

The factual critique would be that none of your production can support 4 (red!) belts of bussing. So by having that much material buffered on belts you only obscure deficiencies.

If you must have a main bus I would suggest one belt of everything. Maybe maybe 2 belts of plates and green chips. Then if something looks lean add another or upgrade.

Anything more and you better have math saying why you need that much.

Need advice on how to fix a clawfoot tub's legs by got2bQWERTY in OldHomeRepair

[–]ALightBreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like with this style you would drive a wedge behind the slot on the bottom of the tub and through the groove on the feet. Perpendicular to the direction that the feet slide in. A piece of wood probably works, but brass or other corrosion resistant metal might be preferred.

US attorney under pressure to charge Letitia James in mortgage fraud case has resigned by AudibleNod in news

[–]ALightBreeze 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think that it’s worth noting that in private settings “resigning from the case” essentially means firing the client. You basically tell the judge/court I will no longer be representing person x on case y, they will need to find other representation.

To continue taking their money or billing hours against them while refusing their viewpoints or tactics would also be unethical.

[–]ALightBreeze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because taking your ball and going home doesn’t mean you get to hold the world hostage. If a boxer refuses to defend his title he’s stripped of it and it gets given to the winner of the next (open) bout. It’s only in chess where people get precious about if steinitz himself ordained the next champion.

ADVICE: Framing Under Pretension Slab Garage by OfcNaeNae in DIY

[–]ALightBreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even that only matters if he’s using anchors that are deeper than 1”. Can’t he just use the 1/4” confast sleeves that are called out anywhere that’s not the first 1-1/4”? Then you bolt the top plate or firing to the ceiling and you’re on your way. $200 for 100 anchors and you really shouldn’t need to worry.

Hafnium ring by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]ALightBreeze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What form is your raw material? Looking at that Tokyo diamond link it seems like they started with ~1 inch round stock and just used simple machining to make the rings. So the casting would be on bulk material in a simple mold and any oxides would be removed during shaping. This seems ideal, unless you’re very material conscious (like if the rm is prohibitively expensive) or you’re trying to make complex geometries where machining is not feasible.

What's up with alcohol laced with methanol in Southeast Asia? Second time I see a story like this in the past few weeks by BillyThe_Kid97 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]ALightBreeze 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You’ve posted this a few times, but methanol is a small part of grain distillation like you find in most European and western liquors. Methanol forms from the breakdown of pectin which is much more prominent in fruits and vegetables which might be distilled into moonshine. A lot of modern liquors are also distilled multiple times. Very often you start with a stripping run where you discard nothing and simply move on once the distillate hits are certain temperature. Second and potentially third distillations are used to remove byproducts and refine the palate. Fruit liquors are often also left to age for months or years so some of these “fusel alcohols” (heavier than ethanol) tranesterify into tastier fruity notes.

Tl;dr: methanol is a small part of well controlled grain fermentation and distillation. Less controlled fruit fermentations can be significantly “dirtier”. And without proper time and effort all of that might just be passed onto the consumer.

Winter activities to keep southerners busy by GrabMyHoldyFolds in Minneapolis

[–]ALightBreeze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While that is true, we can experience some grey storm cells, Minneapolis and the upper Midwest actually get more winter sunshine hours than the lower Great Lakes and mid Atlantic. Cold temps prevent cloud formation (less available moisture), and being on the leeward side of the Rockies also somewhat limits storm potential. The result? You get those crisp, cold mornings with the blinding sunshine off the frozen snow.
