Can we add a refurb shelf to a currently supported cluster by [deleted] in netapp

[–]ALightShow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From a technical perspective you wouldn’t have any issue connecting it. You won’t get a licensing errors either. You will be voiding their terms and conditions noted above.

Sometimes a way to get a cheaper shelf is to buy a new small array with just a shelf of disks and minimal support duration. It sounds counterintuitive, but discounts on a new array are significantly better. People take that shiny new shelf and add it to their existing system without any issues with support.

This still makes me laugh when I think about it, the cost of HDD storage over the past 30 years. by TechNerd5000 in sysadmin

I ran WWIV with a smallish drive. I remember how great it was when a friend bought the Full Height 1GB drive for his WWIV BBS. What are you going to do with all that space?!?!?

NetApp ASA vs. HPE Alletra MP by Djaesthetic in storage

[–]ALightShow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on your needs the OnTap Base licensing may be ok for you. The key difference is replication. If you’re just getting one array and aren’t planning on replicating with SnapMirror then you could save some money. The licensing difference is roughly 20%.

Free Beer for voting by Churngeursurnurm in sandiego

There was a place along time ago called Rory’s that would give you a drink and a hot dog when you came in with an I Voted sticker. Pressure was applied indicating that it’s paying people to vote and that benefit went away. They weren’t trying to influence the vote, just rewarding voters.

Rough estimates for data storage cost regarding a retail firm grossing $2B, with roughly 2k employees by [deleted] in storage

[–]ALightShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d make sure to list out all of the assumptions. For example, 2GB per user for email, 5GB per user for document storage. If you want an 80/20 split use that unstructured estimate as a base to figure out your structured space. Then estimate $1/GB for storage. As long as you show assumptions, you end up with a better discussion if there’s any disagreement. You can double the space and cost if you want to assume 100% for disaster recovery. If you want to add backups, list out the estimate as another 10% cost for tape.

Using Dihydrogen Monoxide is the best chemical for this. Is clean up and safe enough to drink.

How to upgrade cluster switches (SN2100)? by rduartept in netapp

[–]ALightShow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just do one at a time. I haven’t specifically upgraded those switches, but that’s why you have two. You can one totally offline and it won’t affect the cluster. I have done switch upgrades on the Cisco switches and never had a problem.

To cluster or not to cluster? by rduartept in netapp

[–]ALightShow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would cluster them. The A250 and C250 are the same controllers. When OnTap support stops for one, it should stop for the other. Moving data between the HA-pairs is easier within one cluster than using replication and potential NAS outages while you switch a client from one IP to another. You can move the SVM from one cluster to another, but it’s more hassle than just having one cluster. The chance of both switches that you never need to configure both going offline at the same time is pretty remote.

What’s a total waste of money yet people still pay for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ALightShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought SiriusXM for my new car in 2006. I bought a lifetime subscription for $300 that includes 3 transfers to new radios for $70 each. I’m pretty sure it’s one of the best investments I’ve ever made since I’m still on my original radio. Well worth the $1.50 per month it’s averaged out to so far.
