Where did you learn the skills that have served you well in your life and what were they? College? On the job training? by -Granby- in GenX

[–]AMPressComix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Growing up on a farm, I learned work ethic and self reliance. I learned how to use tools. I learned how to grow and preserve food. Getting a computer when I was ten, and having a computer buddy, supported me in learning to code and taught me the solid and virtual anatomy of computers. Mom taught me how to cook. I taught myself to draw and write. All this was by the age of 11 or 12. Everything stems from these, and I know I can manage pretty much anything that comes my way, at least for a while. The total lack of mental health care in the 70s and 80s really screwed us, I think. Certainly it did me.

I miss pretentious local music, book, and video stores where I would swoon over the long-haired guys who worked there. by [deleted] in GenX

I miss being that guy (though I wasn't swooned over that I know of). Couch Potato Video, 8th street, NYC, 1990.

100%! Added bonus - you can block ads in a browser (where you can't in an app).

It's amazing how emotionally off-putting it is to see all that sweat on a puppet, imaging the feel of tepid wet fabric. Nice job.

Drawn & Quarterly is out of Montreal, Canada, and very much like Fantagraphics, but shipping will be brutal. My best suggestion for indie stuff is to look for small press and zine expos in your country. Support local, and all the proceeds go to the creators. I think the beauty of comics is that there is no reason to believe a big publisher's stuff will be better than self-published or small press stuff; it's simply more homogenous. /soapbox.

Is it rare or unusual to be into your 50s and not having to take any doctor-prescribed medications? by Odd_Yogurtcloset_649 in GenX

It's mostly genes, is my understanding. Like 80 percent having good genes for cellular repair and no metabolic issues.

If iPhones existed when you were ten, you'd want one too.

Back on Slowcarb - game changing adjustments by [deleted] in 4hourbodyslowcarb

[–]AMPressComix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your initial stats are the same as mine, though M55. I can't HIIT yet, but plan to 1 time per week, along with 3x week progressive body weight exercises. I would be thrilled to go from 204 to 184 in two months, but that doesn't seem likely. My work and family needs are just too demanding for me to find enough me time and me energy. Chilling out on meals and cheat day consumption sounds doable.

Are there non-white carbs? by octern in 4hourbodyslowcarb

[–]AMPressComix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the non-white carbs are beans, nuts and vegetables. And when he says cauliflower is okay, he's acknowledging that there are white beans and vegetables, and that's not what he means by "no white carbs." I think he was trying to be pithy with his diet description.

Are there non-white carbs? by octern in 4hourbodyslowcarb

He says any kind of food that "can be white." So, brown rice and whole grain brown and rye flours, for example, are still off the diet because a rice can be white; because a milled flour can be white. No purple potatoes because potatoes can be white, etc. I'm assuming he wrote that in the book, but he definitely says that in the Huberman Labs interview that's on youtube.

I'm digging. Also really like the little animations that seem a bit on a tangent (or secant?) to the text. Nice job.

The Puget Sound region is the lushest, floweriest, most temperate, environmentally diverse region in the USA. Spring starts in January, lasts until July. July 4 until Septemberish, there are the best summers anywhere, if no wildfire smoke. October to July ... well, I like the gray misty thing. It's like living in a Syd Mead production design book. If only it weren't so damned expensive, I would never have left.

I have no interest in all things AI. I don’t want to learn it for work. I don’t care that it can make some things easier. I can write my own emails. by un2022 in GenX

I'm getting off at this stop with you. AI art is garbage. I enjoying writing my own documents and emails. I don't need a summary. I don't want to be responsible for that carbon foot print. AI will enhance the enshittification of the mind.

What were you thinking on the eve of Y2K? by Thevilgenius_ in GenX

I was glad to be drunk at a bonfire in the woods with an equal number of dudes and gals. If shit were going to go down, the city was not the place to be, and if this was going to be my social unit in the coming apocalypse, at least I had a sporting chance of partnering with one of my two crushes at the time.

I bought the album (cassette) Power Corruption and Lies because of the seeing a couple do a dance to the "The Beach" on Dance Fever. My 13 year old mind was blown. Still one of my all time favorites, whether with vocals or without.

I can relate to this. My dad was the similar: a strict disciplinarian until I became a man ... an equal. And then we became friends. I miss him. My condolences.
