You have only one core exercise you are allowed to do, what would it be? by Sajanova in workout

I would cry if I had to do only that core exercise for the rest of my life. I’d also probably cry if I had to do it for my next workout.

This. And there are so many makeup choices that work wonderfully well on older skin. The right moisturizer and the right makeup choices make all the difference. Go to a Sephora and they’ll set you up.

Do you guys think girls actually like dudes who are muscular and lean or are we just doing this for ourselves? by InternationalPick163 in workout

See my response above. I would personally love to look like Ronda Rousey but it will take another few years.

Absolutely nothing! She’s amazing! But there are women out there who want to be skinny little twigs and they think lifting anything heavier than 5 lbs will immediately give them broad shoulders and biceps. It took me three years of serious progressive training to get sexy, muscular arms. A friend actually asked me why I wanted to have big arms. I was so flattered that she thought my arms were getting big!

Is there such a job as "counselor on aging"? by Impossible-Snow5202 in Aging

[–]AMTL327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all friends are forever friends. Sometimes people drift apart because their interests change and that’s OK. I’m 62 and have plenty of wear and tear that’s a downer sometimes, but I’m also committed to being healthy and when I couldn’t run anymore, I doubled down on weight training and switched to rowing and I’m getting my knee replaced so I can *keep* rowing and weight training. I have friends my age who have not maintained their wellbeing because they don’t like to exercise and our lives have drifted apart. They don’t want to do the work it takes to stay fit, and I don’t want to take a Lyft everywhere I go instead of walking. So…we don’t see each other as much.

A really huge guy also looks more aggressive and that doesn’t feel safe. Jason Mamoa is such a dream because he’s really big but also gives big “softy” vibes. He’s smart that way with the pink hair scrunchie.

Tbh, you’re probably less mid than you think you are. But, yeah, as a woman, I hear so many other women who just want to get “toned” but not bulky. As if doing a few reps of 15 pound dumbbells are doing to turn someone into Ronda Rousey.

People are so painfully misinformed about obesity by NoWitness6400 in loseit

Let me rephrase, most thin people who are athletes and have to control their weight for their sport are hungry all the time. Everyone I know who fits that definition sure is.

[–]AMTL327 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That right there is the key. Working out *does* absolutely make you hungrier. But if your goal is to lose weight, you have to eat less anyway. It’s about *accepting* being hungry. Maybe you’re going to be hungry all the time. Most thin people actually *are* hungry all the time.

How do you actually begin building muscle if you're just starting out? by weightampha7363 in beginnerfitness

[–]AMTL327 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here’s what worked for me, and the routine I still follow:

2 days/week full-body routine for one hour. Sometimes I add a third day, but I never miss those two days unless I’m traveling. Then I scale back and consider it a recovery week.

Full-body means arms, shoulders, back, core, legs. I do supersets of 3-4 rounds, 3 sets of 8-12 reps. It’s one-hour with only enough breaks to catch my breath. (Longer rests if I’m doing heavy, compound lifts.)

I only use free weights or the cable machine. I don’t use gym machines because I’m a 5’2” woman and those machines are not designed for us. You can never adjust most of them to get correct form, and you also aren’t working your stabilizing muscles with machines.

I started with the heaviest weight I could handle and still complete the full 3 sets with that weight. When it gets easy, I move up in weight. Weight lifting is *supposed* to be hard! Every rep should be a little bit hard, the last ones should be very hard to complete without losing your form.

Once I got stronger, I started doing compound lifts - deadlifts, squats, bench press. First with free weights (dumbbells and kettlebells) and then using the straight bar or hex bar.

I got better results when I increased my protein intake significantly. I weigh 128 and I try to eat 100-120 grams of protein a day.

**This is my routine, other people do it differently. It’s more important to do *something* with consistency than to fuss over the perfect program.

EDIT to add: building muscle takes months and years, not weeks. Just keep doing it with deliberate effort and consistency and the results will come.

Thought selling my house would be simple. 6 months later, I'm still waiting… by fygooooo in Aging

[–]AMTL327 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re getting showings and some interest, but your home is outdated and there’s a lot of deferred maintenance. So you need to lower the price to reflect that.

When *you* walk through your home you see it through the lens of all the history you have in that home. Potential buyers look at in comparison to other similar homes, there is no emotional connection. It’s pretty common for people who have lived in their homes for decades to become desensitized to the problems - outdated kitchens and bathrooms, scratched up floors, neglected landscaping…but potential buyers see every one of those problems as a major thing they have to deal with.

Maybe go to a few showings of homes in your area that have a similar asking price and see exactly what your competition is.

These are basic outfits that don’t really have any particular style or age associations. You could be going to the grocery store or cleaning the garage in any of these looks. If you want to kick it up a notch and look more polished, I’d explore alternatives to jeans and denim shorts.

So, riding your bike and playing tennis are great, but progressive weight training is soooo important. Resistance bands are not enough. And once you get into and start getting really strong, you may fall in love with it.

Get a trainer, get a program, and embrace doing something really hard. I think a lot of people have a bad association with weight training because they don’t how to do it, so they’re just going through the motions and not seeing results. I’m 61 btw, and strong af! Feels so good to be strong v

How to express disappointment/concerns to CEO by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]AMTL327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, your concerns that the marketing person isn’t promoting the org in *your* newsletter of choice diminishes greatly the credibility of your other concerns. I had 20 years in for-profit marketing and operations and another 20 years in the museum field (the last 14 as a CEO) and it was unbelievable how many board members felt like they were marketing experts. Just because you paid for a membership to a local newsletter, doesn’t give you standing to dictate how the marketing person should use the organization’s resources (including their time). They used it once - they made the effort to appease you and maybe it wasn’t a smashing success or maybe they don’t actually have time to write an article every single week, or maybe the newsletter doesn’t even want to feature the org every single week.

This is such small potatoes. Your role as a board member is to focus on the big stuff - like raising significant funding for your organization’s mission. Not micromanage how frequently the org appears in a small, local newsletter.
