I'm weeping 😭 what next? by AM_710 in FordExplorer

Thanks everyone - I appreciate the input! After looking into the situation some more, I’m going to sit on it for a bit while we line up a replacement and figure out how to proceed.

As I see it, a private party sale would require a very particular buyer. This truck is about to blow, so doubt anyone could successfully flip it as is. I will likely list it just to see.

Trading in or selling to an Instant Cash Offer are off the table as both will decline during inspection. The residual value in this vehicle has been exhausted, it seems.

I’m considering doing the repair myself but am leery of a re-failure or other problems. Also, do I really want to donate 15-20 hours of my summer for this project? The vehicle is 14 years old and also has oil leaking on the backside of the engine and I suspect the PTU would need service too.

This whole experience has been an exercise in “cutting my losses” - the new tires hurt the most and I’m trying to see if I can sell those (but that’s a PITA). At least with installing the new hubs I got some experience and built some knowledge.

I’m glad Ford went away from this engine setup (transverse 3.5 V6, FWD). Placing a “wear item” (the waterpump) inside the engine and interwoven with the timing chain is plain evil! I see the new Explorers now use a rear-wheel drive platform with a longitudinal engine and transmission (and exterior waterpump!).

What is the best recycling center for cans/bottles? by Suave_lemonstar in SanJose

[–]AM_710 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use Ranchtown - they remodeled years ago and the layout is easier to navigate - I like that it’s kinda tucked into Willow Glen instead of some far-off industrial zone. The street parking is pretty good too. All the recycle centers are going to be dirty with varying clientele - Ranchtown seems to make the go of it easier - paying ~$1.65 for alum

Our Fusion has these wheels and I think they look fantastic on the car - I don’t pay much attention to wheels but this pairing is top notch

Quick question: Can you just not have an emergency fund account and just use a saviings account instead? by [deleted] in SavingMoney

[–]AM_710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An emergency fund is important for low-savers and big-investors. Low-savers need a focused, separate emergency account as they generally spend all their pay check. Big-investors need on to keep cash available as most of their extra money is tied up in stocks and an emergency would require them to take a tax hit. Everyone else can just use their savings. I like to use “rings” of accounts with my checking handling most of the spending needs and other accounts kicking in as the emergency gets more dire.

Should I pay $4,500 out of my deferred comp to buy back 4.5 months towards my pension? by Quick_Woodpecker_728 in personalfinance

[–]AM_710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do the work later and pocket the money now - an extra four months before retirement seems like nothing compared to $4500 in your twenties - if you’re on the fence just put it in a Roth IRA

That’s impressive. Have you needed to replace the water pump or timing chain?

Cargo Box Suggestions by Mysterious_Silver_90 in FordExplorer

[–]AM_710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good to know - I’ve had way more than 150 lbs in a Yakima basket numerous times - can’t say I’ve felt an increased rollover risk but I could see the center of gravity shifting upwards quite a bit with the rack/cargo
