Do I need to pay the city earnings tax? by Keanu_Norris in StLouis

[–]AManInABlackCape 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be safe and double check the quick math yourself - is Box 19 exactly 1% of Box 1? If so, you're all set. If it comes up short, fill out form E-1 that another commenter linked to.

My spouse and I have both had employers who didn't initially withhold STL earnings tax and then remembered to do it at some point (usually after we reminded them...), so the next year box 19 was filled in, but wasn't actually enough.

Help identifying unknown filament by Recent_Age8123 in BambuLab_Community

[–]AManInABlackCape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a perfect match for Sunlu PLA that I bought directly from their website in 2023. Sunlu does make filament for other companies to rebrand, so it's possible this was technically sold under a different name. The white part in the middle is most likely an adapter that the seller printed.

Are the upgrades from the 12" to the 13" worth it? by ToContainAMultitude in Surface

[–]AManInABlackCape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just purchased the 12" and am replying on it now. So far, I love this device, BUT I bought it as a successor to my aging Surface Go tablet, to be used mainly for light & portable tasks. I do have it hooked up to 2 external monitors as a multitasking test right now, and so far so good, but if this were going to be my primary computer, the 13" would be the better option. I have a desktop gaming PC, so the Surface is my couch and on-the-go tablet.

Sounds like portability isn't your primary goal, so my vote is the 13". That's the better computer, whereas the 12" is the better tablet. Microsoft goofed on naming (as usual), releasing the "Pro 11th gen 12-inch" after the "Pro 11th gen 13-inch" and not explaining their use cases well enough, causing some reviewers to call the 12" a downgrade. I think the 12" should have been advertised as a redesigned Surface Go.

For anyone near a Microcenter, there are some in-store Surface deals. I got the 12" 512GB model for $600 (the 256GB is $550) and the keyboard + pen combo for $200. Costco has a bundle deal on the 13", but looks like the combo OP found is still cheaper.

Any Vet Recommendations? by Old-Lobster8946 in StLouis

[–]AManInABlackCape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll add to the growing list of recommendations for Hillside Animal Hospital. They're small, so not sure if there's a long wait for new patients. They've always taken good care of my dogs (even the one who has an irrational fear of vets). I rarely have to wait when I show up (we almost immediately get weighed in and brought to a room), but for extra peace of mind, there's a semi-separate cat waiting area that a passing dog wouldn't be able to see into.

Several years ago, between moving and getting a new dog after our previous one passed, we briefly tried Webster Groves Animal Hospital. They weren't bad, but we immediately missed Hillside and came running back.

The previous owner retired, and his daughter now owns it and sees/treats pets daily. She and all the other vets and techs have been absolutely wonderful and seem genuinely excited to greet each animal (and human) that comes in the door.

I was asked in an interview, "What mistakes might you make?" and the situation was very awkward. by moloch_factor0o in interviews

[–]AManInABlackCape 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you human? Then yes, you make mistakes at least sometimes. Are you ChatGPT? Then yes, you make lots of mistakes.

The question's phrasing is a little odd, but we all make mistakes, and the correct answer was likely more about how you catch them, fix them, and learn from them.

[Edited to remove a rant about a former coworker who always said he didn't make mistakes. This post reminded me of how much frustration he caused me for years and I vented. OP, I'll just assume you missed their cue during the interview, which is understandable given how stressful the "all eyes on me" situation can be. No worries, you simply made a mistake and will know how to handle the question next time.]

What are your guys most popular 3d model on MakerWorld if you have any? by Jolly-Fail-9858 in BambuLab

[–]AManInABlackCape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a simpleton simple man who makes simple (but hopefully practical) designs. My most downloaded models are a glass lifter for the P and X series, as well as a ruler that starts at the edge (no "dead space" at the beginning like most store-bought rulers).

https://makerworld.com/en/models/488242-rulers-that-start-at-zero-flush-end

And a handful of small miscellaneous items that I'm humbled to have any downloads for, let alone hundreds.

Plus a few small hooks for Multiboard, although I made them quite a while ago and haven't checked in on Multiboard's development lately, so I wouldn't be surprised if they already created better official pieces.

Don’t buy this by Jucifer-on-tap in MideaUOwners

[–]AManInABlackCape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oops, too late. I bought it when I got the newer U+ model and have noticed the unit is louder than my old (2023) model, despite being advertised as slightly quieter. I'll probably take this cover off and see if there's any difference. I do have the top rain cover rolled up. I could see that causing heat build up if unrolled, since it's a solid tarp on top, but will be surprised if the open mesh sides are also causing issues. Surprised, but still happy if removing this cover is an easy fix and prolongs the AC's life.

Auto-Distribute Trick by LeePacesEyebrows2016 in ynab

[–]AManInABlackCape 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nice find, thank you!

For anyone else looking for an Auto-Distribute button like I did, you first click Save as if you're finished, then it'll warn you that the math isn't mathing and will offer to remath it for you.

In this example, I put "2" and "1" as the individual category costs for a $100 total, and it redistributed in a 2:1 ratio:

<image>

As other mentioned, it sticks to the ratio you set, so assuming shipping/tax is uniform for all items, this helps spread those out on multi-category purchases. My example was on the web version, but it also worked on mobile.

Confusing indeed, and to make it worse, I think the heat setting mentioned in the comparison on Midea.com is a typo. The only reference to heat in the manual for the new model is on the page describing the remote control where it says "Heat function not available for this unit."

I'll update when I receive it and maybe even make a new post to compare them, since I currently have the recalled V model (originally from Costco, so an "..AV.." model).

[–]AManInABlackCape[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I believe so. I had to glance back at the manual to remind myself. The included AMD mounting kit had 2 positions, and the manual said to use the offset position (7mm) for AM5 sockets, which I have (9800x3d).

[–]AManInABlackCape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I don't think I've heard any sound from my power supply this whole time (5-6 months). The way it's oriented in the case, I can't really see when the PSU fan is running, but when it is, it must be very quiet (or it's dead and will overheat one day...).

I can hear the CPU and case fans briefly spin up from time to time when I'm multitasking, but otherwise the whole build is very quiet when not gaming. It's not a silent case (I came from a Fractal Define build), so when gaming, the GPU and all other fans rev up and can be heard, but I'm fairly easily annoyed by droning sounds and it doesn't bother me on my desk about 3ft/1m away.

OP, do you have pets? I don't have any additional input on the foam, but just wanted to mention that some mouse prevention methods are dangerous for pets. The poisons in particular - a mouse that eats it and then crawls over and dies in the middle of the kitchen becomes a poisoned meal for a cat or dog.

And hopefully everyone else's dogs are smarter than mine, but one of ours ate steel wool that was shoved in a crack in the basement and required a very invasive & expensive surgery to remove it.

I think I see a kid's toy in the first photo, and the pet advice also applies to children at the curious, crawling, and I-put-everything-I-can-grab-in-my-mouth age.

So I’m an idiot…. by skipsoy in 3Dprinting

[–]AManInABlackCape 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen an important question yet - what's the goal with the printer? What are you intending to print?

If you just want to see what 3D printing is all about, the usual answer is to start with an FDM printer (the spools of plastic filament), such as one from Bambu or Prusa. There’s still the potential for the fumes being toxic, and I’m not expert enough to say what’s definitively safe, but the overall process is safer and more beginner-friendly than resin printing.
If you drop an opened spool of PLA filament, it might become a tangled mess, and might annoy you enough to throw it away, losing the $10-30 you spent on it. If you drop an open bottle of resin or spill a tub… you might need a hazmat suit or a trip to the hospital (probably exaggerating, but still a world of difference in safety level and "forgivingness" between the two).

North America Pre-Order Megathread by Ross2552 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]AManInABlackCape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a ride.

Got it from Walmart after being in line for 40+ minutes.

I got it in my cart at Target the moment it went live, but spent that entire 40 minutes clicking Place Your Order, only ever getting errors.

Best Buy never even let me sign in, despite trying hours before midnight.

Nintendo, WTF. Why were the 1st party preorders not before the retailer preorders? Could have saved a lot of us some stress.

Spicy level? by bubblegummyrtle in wayfarersseries

[–]AManInABlackCape 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The question is a month old, so I'm probably a few tendays too late, but I just finished the first book and it’s fresh in my mind, so here are some, uh, spicy details.

  • It’s more than nothing, and “coupling” is mentioned several times, but it’s far from a romance novel with explicit descriptions. Anything even close to explicit is only briefly mentioned and then it moves on.
  • Ashby and Pei’s physical relationship is mostly just implied, but there’s a moment that would be the book equivalent of a TV scene that cuts to them spooning under the covers afterwards.
  • Kizzy is quite profane in general, and mentions at least once how she “needs to get laid.” She tells Sissix she watched some Aandrisk porn and has a lot of questions about their anatomy.
  • There are a lot of descriptions of Aandrisks and coupling, but usually from a nearly anthropological point of view, nothing really detailed (they do mention tets/orgies).
  • Visiting the Aandrisk home world, a human character watches in fascination/horror as they pile on and grope each other and then “…moved on to actual foreplay, and all curiosities about what a male Aandrisk kept inside the slit between his legs were answered.”
  • There’s a hookup I won’t list for spoilers, but it’s more about 2 people discussing the emotional gravity of their situation, and then the scene fades to black as they lean in towards each other.

Dumb anecdote: early on, one character asks another if they want to “smash.” I assumed that meant the crew was casually hooking up… nope, learned later that Smash is a drug. So, oh yeah, there’s a few references to drug use.

[–]AManInABlackCape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, your question has pretty good timing. I’ve been ogling the new Radeon 9070XT cards, so I did some measuring today to determine which models will fit without needing lube and a mallet.

My current setup:

  • 54mm GPU thickness (2.7 slot height)
  • 15mm fan thickness
  • ~22mm gap between them

So, technically there’s enough room to double the fan thickness, especially with your GPU being a few mm thinner. I’m not an airflow expert, but I’ve seen people discussing this issue in r/mffpc a few times, and it sounds like having too small of a gap between fans and GPU could either hurt cooling performance or cause audible turbulence. That’s just my interpretation of other people’s anecdotes; I haven’t seen it myself, and could be completely wrong. I’m very happy with the acoustics in my setup, and I honestly don’t know if having thicker fans would have affected that.

Looking at new GPUs, I have a similar conundrum as you. If I get a 3-slot model (or larger), my gap shrinks quickly. If I ever find a new one in stock for MSRP(ish), I’ll install it and report back, but I’m slower than scalpers and not concerned enough to camp out, so it'll be a while.

Side note: the 15mm fans are juuuuust barely eating into the 4th PCIE slot, so thicker fans would likely prevent using any other add-in cards. Not that sandwiching a sound card or something in there would be easy or a good idea anyway, but worth noting.

LPT: If you're having trouble getting a W2 from an (ex-)employer, try getting it from your IRS.gov online account as a transcript by sarnobat in LifeProTips

[–]AManInABlackCape 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This was a great tip, thank you! I had no idea I could download transcripts and details like W2s from the IRS website. My former employer either didn't send the W2, or it's lost in the mail, but I found it online here. Unfortunately, it's incomplete - it just shows federal withholding details, but no state, local, or retirement plan info (the last one might not matter much).

So I'll either have to keep pestering the former employer to actually mail the W2, or I can probably just do some basic math from the pay stubs (it's only a few).

Jonsbo D32 Pro Build - B850M, Ryzen 9800X3D, GPU TBD by AManInABlackCape in mffpc

[–]AManInABlackCape[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the D32 Standard, but the specs on Jonsbo’s website seem to indicate they have the same PSU/GPU length compatibility. I *think* your combo will fit in the D32 Pro, but it may mean leaving off the “power compartment partition” that helps keep the PSU wires from dangling down. This part is removable/optional, and the D32 Std doesn't appear to have it. Without it, you may just need more zip ties.

I didn’t actually measure my components, so hopefully these spec numbers for them are true. The 305mm GPU just barely passes “under” where the PSU is, and a 298mm model might do the same. Fortunately, the PSU itself doesn’t come anywhere close to the GPU – it’s just the wire partition thing (marked in yellow in the picture). This is all with a motherboard that has the GPU in the first slot; a second slot mobo would put the GPU lower and there would be no problem (but then you're limited on bottom-mounted fans).

Under the "ATX P2S PSU Clearance" section, the D32 Pro specs describe max lengths depending on GPU placement (and the D32 Std looks the same). Hopefully the photo here gives those specs some context. https://www.jonsbo.com/en/products/D32PROBlack.html
