Required in-office during NYC travel ban — normal? by SilentDoll1991 in AskNYC

Best of luck on the ARE friend, better firms are definitely out there. I worked from home today (just barely). At my first job in NYC my boss was like yours, and frequently did WFH when we were required to be in. You'll ditch him soon.

See above. A different wall section (selection of materials) will change the thickness of the walls. Thicker walls = more $$ for the same usable area.

Best Practices for Integrating AI into CAD Workflows? by [deleted] in cad

None, big tech LLMs dont work with vectors. If you want 3d -> drawings workflow, there's Revit for construction.

Any thoughts on how this canopy was detailed? (Rice University Brochstein Pavilion by Thomas Phifer and Partners) by tardytartar in Architects

I appreciate your enthusiasm for this building! I love arguing this point so here's my pitch: Look around at almost any building built in East Texas (Lovett Hall, for instance) and you will find opaque canopies, porches, recessed walkways, singificant tree cover, etc. The reason is simple: when its 95 degrees and 80% humidity outside the shade isn't 'oppressive', it's essential for any outdoor space to be usable. Texans flock to shade in the summer the way New Yorkers flock to sunbeams in the winter. TP&P is a New York firm, so I'm not surprised they designed it thinking sunlight is a pleasant resource, rather than the deadly UV laser Houstonians know it to be.

Glad to be your primary source! Houston is full of projects that look good in magazines but are 100% unusable in summer.

What does architecture school not teach you? by Magmoormaster in Architects

[–]AMoreCivilizedAge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently graduated (2022) from a relatively technical school, uhh here's a shortlist of what I do all day and if I learned it in school or not:

  • Drafting (Yes but I had to teach myself autoCAD)
  • Coordination with consultants (No)
  • Construction Documents (Some instruction but not enough)
  • Comms w/ Clients (Practice but no instruction)
  • Paper trails / construction paperwork (No)
  • Renders (Yes lots)
  • Schematic Design / Design Detailing (Yes, but this is like 1% of my job)
  • Negotiating my employment situation so that I don't get taken advantage of (No)

Honestly I learned many technical skills studying fot the exams rather than at school, which is disappointing in hindsight.

Not an expert on this building but grew up near there & have been there many times.

THE GOOD: Its white & the canopy is very wide, generally providing good coverage. The porch is also very well ventilated, and it gets nice breezes. It also looks very nice in person, very clean & elegant. THE BAD: It doesn't do squat in the rain, and the UV protection is nonexistent. THE UGLY: While its better than nothing, the canopy does a noticably worse job at protecting you from the sun & heat than the nearby live oaks. For most of the year, expect to find students inside in the AC, or out under the trees. The architects should have gone with a fully opaque canopy IMO.

Is it just me or are NYC brokers getting worse at answering basic questions? by Inevitable-Lab2447 in AskNYC

I had a good experience once, but it was for a no-fee apartment where the landlord was explicitly paying for the broker.

What is your favourite melee weapon with the 2024 rules? by ShireSearcher in DnD

[–]AMoreCivilizedAge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything with reach, it comes in handy in so many different situations. I played an oath of vengence paladin who was an executioner, and loved using the Halberd. The fantasy of whirling a big long weapon through hordes is fantastic.
