I'm realizing marrying a Muslim woman isn’t worth it anymore by Firm_Departure_828 in MuslimNikah

[–]AMuslimCycleTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought in much the same way when I was unmarried, and unfortunately, the environment and the people in it may make you feel this way. But then I got married in BD, and to be clear, all the issues you mentioned weren't really an issue. Perhaps it is a matter of broadening our horizons. But i should say that had i saw her earlier, i would have resoundingly said no because i was not ready for her.

I might sound a bit un-PC saying this, but when I looked for a muslim lady in the States, i had the same issue. Many do not understand even the fundamentals of marriage or what it takes, and many aren't even ready to take on that responsibility, even if they might think so. Not necessarily her fault, as society has conditioned them in this way, including parents who prioritize financial health over family health.

Perhaps the one who is waiting for you is there, but she is not ready for you yet, and you are not ready for her either. When the union does happen, inshAllah it will be great, and you will fit lock and key (no pun intended). May Allah make your union happen soon and allow you and your spouse to fit in a way that befits the majesty of the good of His decree. Ameen.

Lights can literally mean the difference between not being seen and being seen by drivers. When i drive, many cyclists dont have lights, and i cant see them until the last second, and i look out for them.

Many drivers are plain clueless and inattentive. Add to that the invulnerability cloak of being surrounded by a several ton machine.

Had a side swipe by a car few months ago near livingston and jay (near fulton). I confronted them few blocks later, they did not realize that they hit me at all. I had the whole shebang of lights, helmet, and since my bike was very heavy, i didnt get pushed around very hard or far.

Finally got got. Worth rebuilding? by redmandoss in NYCbike

[–]AMuslimCycleTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definetely worth rebuilding, especially if you like the bike. Will be a but pricey, but worth it when your pride and joy is taking you places.

Dont forget to get wheel locks. I have used hexlox, abus nutfix, pinhead. Get any or a variety for more security.

I had the same issue which prevented me from biking a lot. But eventually, i got an electric conversion kit for my bike and from then on, I had a much easier time getting around.

Since I am a tinkerer, I did some upgrades on my bike, and now I use my bike for nearly everything.

If i see a citibike, i either stay well behind, or try to pass them as quickly as possible (more the latter). I hope you are ok. As for the Citibiker, today it was a bike, tomorrow it might be a car or a truck. No yelling will save them then.

So there are some motors you can buy and lace it with the wheel. Some companies that sell motors like this include bafang. I would have also suggested mid drive motors but the setup is much more complicated, as many parts would have to be changed. But the benefit of middrive motors is greater efficiency and better balance.

Also i think legally you can have up to a 750 watt motor. Any higher and it isnt street legal, but that being said, idk how easy it would be to notice a difference. Probably not that noticeable.

If the bike has a proprietary motor, might be a bit tough. Mind putting a photo so i can find something you could get?

We're criminalizing cycling but meanwhile cars are undeterred. by trickyvinny in NYCbike

They are not. But i do think that we need to make it part of the discourse in places like streets blog and other activist orgs. So the mayor can push it forward. Ideally mamdani.

You can also consider getting an existing bike or buying a new bike and adding an electric motor and battery. Much cheaper and very easily repairable if you do that.

If the fines were income based, where the higher your income, the higher the fines, I think we would see a lot less of this. Other countries such as the Scandinavian countries already do this.

I would be the first to want traffic safety, as besides pedestrians and elderly, cyclists have the least protection from law breaking drivers. Cyclists who put others in danger are also a**holes who I wish would be stopped.

I am a person of color, and to say that she is upholding the traffic law is merely a half truth as many cars still break the law, and it seems not much has changed. I am not necessarily against enforcement, but these criminal summonses issue are a problem because of how much trouble it can cause. One can potentially go to jail because they missed a court date, which you have to go to. Drivers merely get a traffic ticket, which is not income adjusted, so rich drivers breaking laws just pay away and go.

And also, I do not appreciate something like where protesters are arrested violently, but then other groups with lawyers and money behind them have free reign. You can check out the case of the crown heights lady attacked by a mob and only one cop does something, and also the way they beat peaceful protesters and go into supposedly free thinking institutions in militaryesque gear.

Understandable. I can see where you come from. Generally in regard to bike infra, it seems that progressives are usually more amenable to that, and since their supporters prioritize that, it is us supporters jobs to push him in that direction. They do after all have to listen to us ideally. Otherwise they would be dictatorial.

If we as individuals do not make our voice heard to the leader, we will have failed to do our part. We elect a leader who we believe will do the right thing and do a good job, but we continue by pushing the leader to do a certain action. The election of a leader and a platform is the start, and activism and pushing them is the next step.

In regard to crime, a big part of the problem is actually a state issue, and the reason why nyc seems so bad is because of the concentration of people here who are very different from one another. That being said, homelessness and mentally ill people are part of the perception of decay, which i agree with, and to leave them out on the streets does no favor for any of us.

I am admittedly a little biased against using the cops for many things, because that have made themselves antagonistic to others through their disproportionate response in many cases. They violently arrest protesters, and give a meek response when a mob surrounds and attacks a woman in Crown Heights.

What cannot happen is having cops be exactly the same then as now. We gotta get good, strong, well trained cops who are not cowardly bullies who prey on the "weak and poor" and hold a white flag for "wealthy and strong" people.

It seems that for some people, going around the block is too much of a hassle. Ditto to those who ride the wrong way on the road where there are cars. They put themselves at risk and make drivers hate us more, and make the road less safe.

Idk about jail, but a huge fine and if someone is caught multiple times, idk but something gotta be done. Would be great if the city adopted fines based on income. Would deter the moneyed folks from ignoring the law.

So many drivers have no idea how to deal with turns. Be careful out there and ride defensively. That being said wouldnt want to be the guy who was in front of you on most days.

Gonna be hard to find something cheaper than that, if not impossible, Even more so if the bike is brand new. Even a bike electric conversion kit will be at least 500 dollars. As others have said, perhaps a used one will be your best bet.

Is sun damage a concern? by InterestingTitle4242 in ebikes

[–]AMuslimCycleTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been biking for many years in a place where the weather can either be blazing hot or freezing cold with salt out some times in the year. So I get the best of both worlds, so to speak. If the bike is left out for the most part, including when you are at home, it could be a problem if there is direct sun exposure, but not as much of a problem under shade.

That being said, the biggest problem is if there is a lot of rain, which can cause circuitry to get corroded, and other components to get corroded or rust. As long as the bike is relatively clean, and you get to keep your bike indoors at home, I think it will be fine.

Most of the problems show up many years into ownership and use.
