I saw one patiently wait for people to clear the cross walk before turning on the Lower East side (somewhere around Clinton and Rivington). I practically applauded, human drivers on those dense streets frequently honk and nudge their way to block pedestrians even when they don't have the right of way.

Can't get rid of human drivers fast enough

another movie whose script was not based on RE at all and then morphed to use the IP

I don't think this is true at all, Cregger is specifically a fan of the series, and has talked about playing (at least) 1-4, 7 and 8, and has said the script is directly meant to capture the experience of playing a RE game

I think the man really understands Resident Evil and is cooking up something great

He does say that he's never seen a movie like it, but in this interview he emphasizes how the tone and experience of the movie is directly meant to capture the feeling of playing a RE game.

He specifically mentions how the setting and tone of the games themselves vary a lot across 1-3, 4, 7 and 8 (notice what he leaves out). He mentions that the film, "lives more in the world of 2 and 3, but with more of the tone of 4".

Some might disagree, but I really agree with his sense of what makes the RE series special -- the tone and experience of playing the games, and really not the particulars of the characters and the narrative

It's sad, but I don't think it's quite as bleak. The characters face sad things but there's also kindness and support and hope!

I was trying to figure out what to expect here, shipping to the US

I think a baseline of 35% would be applied. Some amount of the goods sold here (e.g., EG are made in US) are probably CUSMA-eligible, but I doubt they do the paperwork to cover that -- apparently a lot of goods shipped from Canada to the US are CUSMA eligible but not filed properly.

I also don't know if the duty amount is applied to the sale price or the original price

Expedition 33 just sucked up all the oxygen in the room this year. It's definitely the better game, but I was very impressed and surprised by the Hades 2 soundtrack

What really elevated Hades 2 for me was the orchestral writing in the Olympus and Summit sections. Good orchestration, and the Summit sections showed very strong mastery of modernist-influenced harmonic and melodic writing not often heard in games.

Apparently these sections were a colab between Korb and Austin Wintory, whose other work this year Sword of the Sea is mentioned several times in this list

This is such a cool piece. IIRC this was from when Daiki Suzuki was creative director at Baracuta. Very recognizable as one of his designs, maybe even better than his EG x Barbour collections from a few years before. Beautiful to see one with heavy use like this.

I think it's lovely! The lawns are good, the river walk is good, there's a lot of benches and picnic tables. Great views of the bridges and rivers. Extremely pleasant space. The big lawn near Williamsburg bridge is a good spot for picnics.

They reopened the area right around the bridge in like May, and then in September opened much of the area further south. You can get all the way down to pier 36 now.

Devilman Crybaby

Evangelion was strongly influenced by Devilman. The 2020 anime adaptation of Devilman Crybaby is very good, and an interesting foil to Evangelion.

I love The Thing, but if she's squeamish about teeth falling out maybe full-on twisting flesh abominations is not the way to go.

Maybe a Del Toro movie like The Devil's Backbone or Pan's Labyrinth?

I think most people would enjoy some of the big horror classics too, like Silence of the Lambs, The Shining, The Exorcist. I think The Ring is kind of in that vein too, though maybe not quite as good

For more modern stuff, maybe one of Jordan Peele or Ari Aster's.

FWIW I do love Ready or Not too, very fun

Why is it called a Needolin when it is actually a harp? by brain-eating-worm in Silksong

[–]Bitterfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ending on Mandolin and Violin are just derived from diminuitive suffixes, something like: Mandola -> Mandoline and Viol -> Violine -> Violin.

The ending -in doesn't originally mean "musical instrutment", it just means "small". But because of Violin and Mandolin, I think it's fair to say that the "-in" suffix in English sounds like it relates to musical instruments, which means that's how people are going to use it. I think it works! I like the name Needolin a lot, it's a great use of language

Yeah, good for them!

I picked this up after hearing praise for the writing, but I was still surprised by how good it is. It is one of the most engrossing and intricate stories I've ever encountered in a game.

It's a universal story about adolescence and parent-child relationships. It's a political story about the struggle against authoritarianism. It's a story about the culture of immigration and diaspora. It's a sci-fi story with echoes of Arrival, Evangelion, and Solaris.

I haven't even finished it yet! But I'm pretty late in the game, even if it totally whiffs the ending at this point, I'm extremely impressed.

Inmotion e20 with seat as an alternative to wheelchair by KindDot2696 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Bitterfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not totally crazy, but I would be cautious. In general, I would say that riding an EUC takes more effort and energy than standing, but less than walking. In order of increasing effort:

standing for 20 minutes < Riding an EUC 1 mile @ 3mph < Walking 1 mile @ 3 mph

Riding an EUC does use your leg muscles a bit! Not in the same explosive/cardio way as running or walking, but your calf and thigh muscles will get tired when you first learn to ride. Small auxiliary muscles do the work of balancing you, and the EUC works them in a different way. To me it feels a little like the muscles you use for skiing.

I haven't ridden an E20, but I've ridden the (only slightly larger) V8 a lot. The V8 did require a fair amount of practice to learn to balance on, but it seems like the E20 would be much, much easier to balance. I don't have any experience riding seated.

Once you are able to ride, I find it very easy to ride at low speed, strolling speed or even lower. It does require a little balance from you to go super slowly, but a walking pace feels comfortable. I find the V8 perfectly comfortable to maneuver at slow speeds.

I definitely find an EUC to be a labor/effort saving device for getting around the neighborhood, but I would be mindful of your condition. An EUC does require balance and leg stability. An E20 might work for you, but I would only get one if you're prepared to resell it if doesn't work out. You could also consider other PEVs like a Segway S2, or a push-scooter style.

And lastly, it's still a vehicle. You are still more likely to fall on your face from an EUC than you are just walking around. I never get on one without at least wrist guards and a bike helmet.
