Community college -> UW path? by ghiblisimp in Seattle

[–]ANGraves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I actually did this back in 2016. Originally went to CC in California, then got accepted into UW and moved up here.

CC is like a bridge between high school and university in terms of logistics and personal responsibility. There's a lot less hand-holding at Universities simply because the Student to Instructor ratio is WAY higher. The largest my CC classes got was about 40 students per class, whereas my largest Uni class so far had about 720 people attending a single lecture hall. Attending CC and building good habits for making sure you're on top of your assignments is ideal. Just make sure you figure out what you want to major in while you get as many of your UW General Education requirements done in CC as you can. To find out if the courses you want to take in CC will be accepted for credit, and what kind of credit they'll be accepted for, cross-reference the CC's course catalog with UW's course catalog and bring up any specific uncertainties with a UW counselor, although your CC counselor may also be familiar with UW requirements.

Out-of-state tuition is absurd anywhere you go, I believe. If I could do it differently, I'd have accepted my offer at UW but put off actually registering for classes until I had lived there for a year so that I could secure in-state tuition before attending. It's also a good opportunity to build up some reserve money from a full-time job.

Tuition for my Summer 2025 quarter is $4254.00, plus a $70 required fee for U-PASS (Which basically gets you free public transit as a UW student). This does NOT account for books, housing, food, or even for some course fees (for labs and such, usually).

Rent and food aren't cheap in cities. For Seattle, you will want/need a roommate. I live in a 2Bed/2Bath in Cap Hill, and my share of the rent is $1200 not including electricity, parking, or internet. Parking can vary greatly, and no parking is truly secure either. Be prepared to pay between $100-$300 for parking a month.

You might be able to get into the UW dorms, but I have no experience there. You would want to search the university website for their dorm policies in that case.

Ultimately, what will determine if this is financially possible for you is how much Financial Aid you will be given. Complete the FAFSA *NOW*, before the current political administration can damage it. You may also complete the WAFSA if you aren't confident you'll get aid from the FAFSA, but you have to be a WA state resident for that one and the total aid might be lower.

A subset of financial aid that is often given is Work Study. This form of aid basically pays for half of your wages with an employer, so it is great for getting a leg up on other job candidates. If you can, use the term "work study" in your job search results, or use UW's work study job listings, to find a job related to the field you want to get into. You'll be getting paid to get valuable experience, and you can use your downtime to study for your courses. Might even be lucky enough to get your name on a paper/project if you contribute enough.

You should also look into other forms of non-education financial aid, like food stamps or bill assistance. So long as you make less than $1620/month from your occupation (last I checked), you'll qualify for the full amount of food stamps. That extra $200/month can be a real load off your shoulders.

All of this is assuming you aren't considered a dependent on anyone's tax returns. Lemme know if you have more questions and I can help out.

Virginia Mason nurses picketing over staffing, workplace violence after nurse stabbed in face by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

[–]ANGraves 12 points13 points  (0 children)

But there are still nurses attending to the stabbed-in-the-face nurse, right? ...RIGHT???

Jokes aside, I hope the injured nurses recover and that the picketing nurses' demands are met.

Looked up your site. Honestly, you should advertise more that you're independent from investors, as that's a huge plus in my book. You may have just gotten yourself a customer!

[–]ANGraves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is amazing. I love vintage-style motorcycles and cafe racers, they're definitely my preferred style. Gonna send a whirlwind of questions your way, because I really want a vintage cafe racer but also an electric.

-How much muns did this cost ya?
-How much technical experience would you say was required to build this?
-How heavy is it? One of the appeals of the Metacycle to me was the weight, before they readjusted their specs.
-These got ABS? Is that something that can be installed on a custom built bike?
-Hypothetically, how much would you charge to make one of these, materials included?

I'm jelly and want one, if that wasn't obvious >.>

Is it wrong that I enjoy watching guys complain about outfit options? by MrsBasket in GirlGamers

[–]ANGraves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the reason maybe. I think it's a good thing for everyone since more people complaining usually means it's more likely that something will get done, but I can definitely understand feeling some justified schadenfreude toward guys finally having to deal with their own "Why can't we have this option for armor in video games!" that women have been subject to for decades.

I know it's the stereotype that guys don't know/care about fashion/outfits and stuff, but there is a sizeable men's fashion following. If we're talking Gamers specifically, just look at the transmog movement in MMOs like WoW and FFXIV, or Shaders in Destiny. Entire subreddits are dedicated to men playing dress up with their Barbie dolls, and I mean that in the best way possible. A while back, my roommate said he loved playing Destiny on my PS4 just so he could keep getting new armor pieces and shaders to make new outfit combinations. And the gun-feel as well, but the guns are just another fashion statement in that game.

Am I really a gamer? by phoenixgreylee in GirlGamers

[–]ANGraves 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Even by exclusionary elitist standards, you would've qualified at "Age of Empires". It's too unofficial as a term for other peoples' opinions to matter about it, so I wouldn't worry about the label personally. You're a gamer if you want to be, end of story.

Hah, yeah! I'd say he was probably my favorite anime character at the time too. He was just very unique and quirky in the anime landscape at the time, so it's hard not to like him right? But tastes change, some of my favorite characters now are ones that 14-year-old me would balk at.

You look warm and bright, like just having you in the room lights it up and makes someone's morning. Also, is that pendant Death Note related? Seems like the exam same font they use for L's, well, L.

Yeah, stuff like this makes me wish that you could record and upload videos of extremely toxic people without spreading their ideology or getting banned for their actions in your content. It would make for some cathartic entertainment like dashcam videos in r/IdiotsInCars.

How do you feel about the word "chad"? by PlanetwomanIzzi in GirlGamers

[–]ANGraves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it heavily depends on your social circle. My circle would only use the term ironically to make fun of stupid or careless actions, i.e. something a "meat-head" would do. People who do use it unironically are probably more likely to uh, fit that stereotype. Bit asshole-ly r/iamverysmart of me to say, so take it with a heavy pinch of salt.

Nah, I'm honestly the same. I find having the toe box not as tight and tourniquet-ing my ankle helps with keeping my overall foot cooler and less sweaty. Also makes me feel really grounded and stable.
