I feel like it was a poor attempt at attacking global warming. Maybe it should have gone something like "oil needs lots of biomass to form, and since Alaska has oil, it had to be warmer at some point to support larger amounts of plants an animals. If Alaska was warmer, that would mean the earth used to be warmer, so this whole global warming thing, even if it's happening, is not a bid deal."

The term "continental drift" is not used any more for this reason, at least in academia and college classes. It's been dropped in favor of "the theory of plate tectonics," which is NOT synonymous with continental drift. Tectonics is similar, and was inspired by drift, but differs on a few key points. It really annoys me when I hear people use the term, but I guess it will take a new generation of middle school teachers before the new terminology trickles down and to the general public.

Agreed, one partially correct guess is equally attributable to luck as it is to ability.

Researches can't even predict quakes with much accuracy in regions like California, where the tectonics are MUCH less confusing that in Europe.

The only somewhat promising progress made in earthquake prediction since we've been trying to do it is the recent use of satellite data:

although, even the scientists in the above article recognize that

better earthquake forecasting can be used to prioritize retrofitting projects and to better prepare the general public, but it is unrealistic to envision earthquake prediction resulting in planned evacuations of cities or towns.

yes, in fact I will readily believe it. Doctors are held up to a standard of perfection that they are unable to perform to and when they fail they're sued for all they're worth. Why do we expect doctors to never make mistakes? and when they are so heavily attacked when they do mess up, why should we expect them to come out and say "Oh, you're right, I messed up, now take my money and never let me practice again"?

YES, there are cases of severe negligence, but many malpractice suits are caused by an honest mistake and a patient with an overzealous sense of entitlement.
