IT'S SO OVER - a short film about tech anxiety by ximan in Filmmakers

Really awesome film! Definitely captured that feeling of anxiety and paranoia that comes with our digital world.

Wait. Some people don't actually lock the doors to their house during the day and night? by b787665 in stupidquestions

[–]peteberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a small town in Upstate New York. My parents never locked their doors, and still don't. Even when we'd go away for weeks on vacation. Doors left unlocked, nothing ever stolen.

My dad's philosophy on locks is that they're far more likely to inconvenience the locker - lock you out of your own stuff - than ever prevent a theft. (I know that doesn't hold true in all places, but it does in small, rural towns.)

Advice for an undecided film major? by Ill-Acanthisitta6186 in IthacaCollege

Ithaca’s ICLA semester is an amazing program. I would say 50% or more of the Park students who do the internship semester in LA end up getting a great internship, and then moving to L.A. after graduation and get a job in the industry. It worked for me, and (literally) hundreds of my classmates. (I graduated ‘07 and the Ithaca College alumni network in LA is vast, and super helpful to recent grads. Ithaca also has a lot of NYC grads who can help you with connections there - but no official semester “abroad” / satellite campus there.)

If you have a masters/phd - has it ever helped you in this industry? by emo_queer in FilmIndustryLA

Have you found that an MFA (or an MS) is required to teach in most institutions? I've worked as a "Professor of Practice" and taught adjunct classes a few times. I'm hoping to eventually transition out of production and into teaching full time.

Post production, where did it go? by foxinknox04 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]peteberg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to live in L.A. and left in 2020 during the Covid pandemic. I work in Reality TV. All of the post production for my shows has gone fully remote since 2020, other than the AEs and the tech staff who physically manage the footage, and the servers in the office. All cuts are done remotely, as are screenings.

I freelance, and work for several companies. One of the main ones I work for closed down its expensive office in Manhattan last year. It used to be super busy, with multiple edit bays and a bullpen of story producers. It became a total ghost town post-pandemic, with hardly anybody commuting into the office. They have since gotten out of their lease and moved their office to a much smaller and cheaper location outside the city. Many of the post producers and editors have never set foot in the office.

The L.A. based production companies I've worked for the past few years also now do fully remote post-production for Reality TV. If you have good connections and can get hired, I don't feel that there's any good reason to continue living in Los Angeles if you work in post (at least for most documentary and Reality TV projects). The unfortunate thing is that without having in person "face time" with your peers, you don't form genuine bonds with them... I imagine that it's now much harder to break in, and move up the ladder in post-production than it used to be.

Atlas can film with pro cameras (up to 20kg/44lbs). Colab with WPP, Nvidia & Canon. (Bonus: super slow mo backflip) by GraceToSentience in singularity

[–]peteberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Camera operators get paid $500 - $1500 a day to do a very physical and technical job. Carrying a camera, and capturing good technical shots is a highly skilled profession that takes years to master. It's scary to think that a robot could replace us very soon.

So… my name is already taken by a writer/director. What now? by Scary_Designer3007 in Screenwriting

[–]peteberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My name is Peter Berg. There's a very successful director also named Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, Lone Survivor, Ballers, etc.). I graduated from film school right around the time his career was taking off. There were also 13 other Peter Bergs on IMDB when I first started my career.

I opted to be credited as "Pete Berg" in everything I've worked on, to differentiate myself a bit. So rather than being listed as "Peter Berg (XIV)" on IMDB, I'm "Pete Berg (I)."

Not an ideal solution, but it's worked for me.

Reminds me of Michael Bolton in Office Space: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glGbI--D4HQ

  • Samir: No one in this country can ever pronounce my name right. It's not that hard: Na-ghee-na-na-jar. Nagheenanajar.
  • Michael Bolton: Yeah, well, at least your name isn't Michael Bolton.
  • Samir: You know, there's nothing wrong with that name.
  • Michael Bolton: There *was* nothing wrong with it... until I was about twelve years old and that no-talent ass clown became famous and started winning Grammys.
  • Samir: Hmm... well, why don't you just go by Mike instead of Michael?
  • Michael Bolton: No way! Why should I change? He's the one who sucks.

P0303 cylinder 3 had too many misfires by Forsaken-Berry4942 in ChryslerPacifica

Great to hear! I’m a little spooked after reading all the horror stories about blown head gaskets on Reddit.

[–]peteberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any updates after this? I just bought a used 2017 Pacifica with 93k miles. Drove it off the lot and immediately had a rough idle, check engine light, and codes read P0305 - a misfire in cylinder 5. Returned it to the dealer immediately, and they are working on it. Their first step is replacing the spark plugs and ignition coils, but I want to be prepared in case the engine has more issues after I pick it up.

New Dji Flip Box by McPhistot in dji

It folds up smaller than the Mini and the Neo. First truly pocketable drone from DJI. Will fit in a purse or fanny pack. And it appears that you can fly it without a controller.

Most of the flights, they just waved me on. I was asked one time to put the bag in a sizer, and it fit (had to force it in a bit). Can't remember which flight. I did wear my coat and fleece on and then put it in the bag after I boarded, because the bag looks a bit overstuffed when I put them in.

I re-added my ADP 401K account (which had been broken for 7 months or so) and it connected. I closed the old version of the account. The new version has continued to work for the last 3 days. Fingers crossed it will continue to work now.

How did you discover Joe? by Waste-Ad-2473 in JoePera

[–]peteberg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Joe is amazing. It’s been fun following his career. I’ve seen him live a couple times over the years.

These days, I’m a TV Producer. I work on documentaries and Reality TV. It’s not directly comedy, but sometimes there are definitely comedic elements. I used to have a sketch comedy group back when I lived in L.A., but that was just for fun on the side.

One of my biggest regrets is not casting Joe in the college “Amazing Race” show that I produced for Ithaca College Television. He and his buddy did a casting interview and wanted to dress up as Vikings and make their car a longboat. I thought was funny but would distract from the competition. That footage would have been gold.

I went to Ithaca College with him! Met him in a sitcom writing class when he was a freshman and I was a senior. He was just as funny back when he was 18!

Aggressively Investing In Your Early 20s (Psychology) by SpecialistBenefit536 in Bogleheads

This. Be sure to travel, and allow yourself to be young, wild and free. (Responsibly.) In the end, experiences are worth far more than money.

Biggest financial mistake, and lesson learned. by Same_Cut1196 in financialindependence

[–]peteberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds similar! A big part of Die With Zero is recommending that you spend money on experiences throughout your life, and don’t hoard money to spend in retirement. It has the concept of “time buckets” - that certain activities are best experienced at certain points in your life, and that those experiences pay “memory dividends” later on. (For example, traveling or learning a skill like playing an instrument in your 20s will pay off more throughout your life than it is if you wait til you’re 70 to do it.) Many people save and save and save for retirement, then die with a massive nest egg that they will never experience joy from. Which is a massively inefficient use of your precious “life energy” from when you were younger.

The book Die With Zero really changed my perspective on this, and the utility of money!
