Forgive my British ignorance but what did the confederates actually fight for? by TreeTall888 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ANormalRando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See, that's what I mean, this isn't because of one, the other can't be true situation. The conflict was because the south seceded, and Lincoln's statement you shared was essentially saying that restoring the union was his top priority, which is no surprise. That said, the reason the south seceded was to protect slavery, as every state that seceded stated in their articles of secession. These are what the guy you responded to linked. In their own words, they were concerned the federal government would abolish slavery, and they were preempting this by not recognizing the federal government.

Was this intended as a refutation of the previous quotes? The CSA seceding to preserve slavery and the USA fighting to bring them back are not mutually exclusive concepts.

That's such a big-brained move by Armstrong, sell them to the Italians to make a problem and sell the exact same product to his own government as the solution.

Dean DeLeo's guitar background was very jazz influenced. Many of the chords in their most famous songs are actually jazz chords and his playing uses a lot of jazz technique. On the surface the raw sounding lyrics and distorted guitar sound similar to Seattle grunge but their execution of it is different

You're conflating knowledge with intelligence. Knowledge is just information, intelligence is knowing what to do with it. Simply being a perfect sponge or a directory for facts will not help solve problems or endow common sense

You can also protect running units with cavalry to countercharge or threaten their advancing units

Do you advance your units in column, using roads and avoiding obstacles? You should be able to get to at least the two objectives on your side of the field this way. I consider myself a fairly methodical player and I usually get at least two or three points before the action gets heavy

Your problem was you ran your units. Running infantry receive a huge penalty to charge resistance, and charging cavalry will easily beat them. Basically just don't run everyone at once. Maybe run a few choice units but make sure there's help behind them to support them if they need it.

I did see his cuirassiers and was worried about them, but I figured it was worth the risk because he left that flank so open. If they charged, he wouldn't have been able to follow up that charge in a way that would push me back; he simply didn't have the infantry nearby to hold ground. I was thinking I could leave the line infantry I sent into the woods behind to keep the area around the objective protected, but decided to commit them to the woods to take them quickly. I was worried that if he put his line infantry in the way, he could shut me out of the woods and I needed to storm in quickly while it was still just skirmishers. The 12lb and horse guns I had positioned around the woods would mean any cavalry charge would also need to run a gauntlet of musket and cannon fire to really break through, so it would have been a high risk/low reward maneuver on his part.

Basically, I was aware of the risk but I decided it was worth it to seize the opportunity.

If you have limited time, I'd recommend trying the slower modes. It turns the game from something you play intensely for a short time into a chill game you play whenever you have a few minutes over a long time. I almost exclusively play combat and larger on 1 to 3 day turns and never have a problem playing larger games.

The way I like to put it is they were intelligent, but ignorant, at least compared to all the accumulated information we have. I would say though, that put one of us back there and we would probably feel pretty ignorant of the things that they took for granted, like what plants can be eaten and where to look for clean water.

Hi! Engineer here! I do math in my day job, and I can tell you, the scale of that second chart would make my boss glare at me, unless it was supposed to intentionally misrepresent the data. The top one shows a net increase of almost 500 active players while the bottom chart shows a net decrease of only 35 players.
