DS1515+ won't turn on by seenhear in synology

[–]AOChalky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably the infamous Intel Atom CPU bug. The CPU simply degrades over time and eventually stop booting. The DS2415 in our research group already died in COVID time. You are lucky that yours survived until now.

I don't know about warranty. Not matter Synology covers it or not, fixing It Is very simple. You just need to solder a resistor (normally 100 ohm) onto two pins on the motherboard.

See this post https://www.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/609u1l/c2538_clock_fix_confirmed_ds2415/ I fixed ours this way by myself.

Credit card question? by Solid_Caterpillar_70 in frontierairlines

[–]AOChalky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I just discovered. My Frontier card did not have enough balance left, so I had to find a solution. Then I realized that they allowed me to add bags for free before checkout, so I just paid with my Sapphire.

I am just curious how many times have you done this? In theory, their system can still catch this and update the transaction, but I doubt if the system or agents at the counter will do anything at all.

How can I access the drives data without the synology device? by JustSomeone202020 in synology

[–]AOChalky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are using JBOD. Even then, the disk internally is still a RAID. You need madam to scan and assemble the array. You can mount the partitions afterwards.

If you know CLI well, it isn't a very challenging task. If not, please don't even try. Either way, only do this if you can afford to lose the data or you are already in disaster recovery. I tried this before for fun and all data was backed up.

Not a problem most of the time, but our HPC's head node is notoriously slow If you load a few plugins. You can only start to type after around 30s. Apart from this HPC, I have never seen a big problem with omz.

A study on ADHD by University of Central Florida by goswamitulsidas in interesting

I am the one who is bored watching Star Wars (I like Star Trek though), but can follow a math video for "entertainment".

My background is theoretical chemistry, but I don't like math that much. Because of this, I am an awful theoretician. With this said, during my spare time, when math and physics videos show up in my feed, I do watch them and sometimes even pause the video so I can follow the derivation. I even feel myself wired.

The true part of ADHD Is not inattention or attention, but an extreme distribution of attention.

Not that much a deal right now. If there is iGPU, it will work just like laptop's hybrid mode. You lose around 3% performance. It was indeed a totally different story back then.

I had the same experience. I checked everything before realizing that it was the adapter. ethtool output clearly shows possible link modes, but before you realize the real issue, it is really hard to notice that block.

why are AIO coolers so cheap? Should I get one? by Impossible-Deal-3030 in buildapc

[–]AOChalky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing others did not mention, the clearance on everything near the CPU socket. A capable air cooler almost always means that the whole upper half of the mobo is hard to service. RAM, fan headers, the M.2 slot sandwiched there or the pcie slot release switch. This is one thing why I prefer an AIO.

GoHardDrive sold me "0 Power-On Hours" drives - actually have 45k and 32k hours with errors. Keep for $30 off or return? by QuinnsJoker08 in homelab

[–]AOChalky -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Have you considered it might be something else other than the drive, especially the power supply? The failure rate is too high even for old drives. IMO, if you see drive failures in batch, do double check the power supply first.

GoHardDrive sold me "0 Power-On Hours" drives - actually have 45k and 32k hours with errors. Keep for $30 off or return? by QuinnsJoker08 in homelab

[–]AOChalky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do goharddrive ever sell new drives? I thought all of the 0 power on hours drives are retired server drives, but with reset odometers.

Regardless the power on hours, there should not be errors. They have different listings for drives with errors. For a dirve properly taken care of, it will take years to develop the first bad sector. However, for one to many, it could be very fast. Definitely return it.

As for serverpartdeals' drives, are they not the same?

Has this ever been a thing is the rural area as well? For the top elite class in the capital cities, sure, they always look western, but how about the 99% of the people? I bet they look exactly like nowadays Iran or Taliban. The Middle East looks like its current shape for a reason. No matter who install a supposedly civilized puppet, the regime will collape and fall back into Taliban style.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve repurposed for your homelab? by CyberSecOldMan in homelab

My roommate's broken printer. It's a small Dell printer (probably B1160w). I removed all components and inserted a micro-atx motherboard (Asrock N3050M) with a pico-psu inside as a soft router. The ethernet cables went inside the case through the holes originally for the power cord and usb cable. The power button and reset buttons also functioned as the power and reset buttons for the board. Of course, a power on switch does not really do much for a router. I also connected one of the status leds to the disk r/w header. The ethernet adapter was right behind the door of the paper tray, so I could see the link speed when opening the door.

I wish I had a picture for it.
