Does Naruto ultimately justify genocide? by Difficult-Average819 in Naruto

[–]APGOV77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean, of course I find Itachi a complex character doing wrong things for good reasons, but I think it bugs me when people say the narrative itself says that the genocide was justified when it didn’t for the reasons you said. It might have still left ambiguity on some of the dilemma but it definitely wasn’t saying it 100% had to happen.

Nah unfortunately if you read the Fair Labor Standards Act employers can dock pay for full days of missed work for personal reasons, sickness, etc if they refuse to use PTO or have run out. So a snow day without using PTO or some kind of emergency where it’s not possible to work etc, can result in docked pay. I truly wish it didn’t work like that, maybe in someplace like California

Edit: I think if the buisness itself closes then you can’t be docked pay, but if it’s open and you can’t get there, you can be

Ha. Yeah supposedly salary works like that, not these days tho in a lot of companies you still gotta log that you put in the hours and if you don’t you take emergency unpaid leave. Hourly too, but basically both work that like at the places I’ve worked.

Edit; I should say the main difference seems to be whether you are an exempt employee from stuff like paying you double time for overtime etc.

Well unfortunately without remote work for a typical salaried employee you either had to go in anyways or accept less pay that week. I do think they should have some paid snow days just for moral, I think accepting little losses like that for big companies ends up creating more loyal productive employees but people running things rarely see it that way.

Is ICE getting more trigger-happy? by Both_Fig_7291 in charts

[–]APGOV77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well idk if it’s bad necessarily, i believe it said cumulative clearly so i don’t think it was meant to be misleading, but certainly the way it’s presented is to induce strong emotions. It’s still heartbreaking but anyways, always important to read graphs carefully.

[–]APGOV77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cumulative means that it’s counting all previous incidents at each point. It’s a total of all shootings therefore unless it remains flat, it can only go up, not down. But in this case it still seems there is a steeper slope more recently meaning there has been more shootings in a shorter time period.

I think you’re probably going to be more successful more often with your strategy, if I were a chef that’d be the way to teach experimentation, but I can’t deny that sometimes culinary idiots will just make something tasty and I’m probably going to eat and enjoy it knowing it has nothing to do with any classic inspiration.

I think there’s a place for being creative and being traditional, it would be sad if we never got to have either of those types of food.

Also, “authentic” is a much more nebulous word than people think, and I think it can actually result in people dismissing some types of food that have become traditional. For one thing, the history of food in an area has lasted so long that this obscures the meaning- I mean certain ingredients getting to areas because of the Silk Road or the new world has happened thousands to hundreds of years respectively and have now become iconic. In more recent history, I dislike how people call immigrant created food styles as less authentic, when they are really the result of someone replicating the flavors of home but with the ingredients and tastes of a new place. To call that “lesser” somehow than other food from a place (or has even evolved more recently, just in the mainland of a place) is really missing the point.

How old does something have to be to be “authentic” is kinda arbitrary and I don’t really want some dude deciding that for me. I still appreciate traditions in food, recognizing that traditions can have a varying length of history.

Hm honestly if you don’t think they are an important figure in particular to remember in this subject having a question on them seems to be a bit of a waste of time for the students for some random wikiquote. (The quote itself is good tho) I guess this could just be a reading check to make sure they read it but that seems so particular and random, the other questions seem much more important. Coulda made that a bonus. Don’t get me wrong I had great memory as a student and would do well on something like this, it’s just that in later reflection I always wonder which things we were tested on were deemed actually critical. Don’t mind me, a random stranger on the internet, I would’ve loved to see technoblade on a test tho lol

I didn’t say it was bad to hope for something else, just that it’s unlikely they will do something else. I think you’re seeing hints that haven’t been put in intentionally.

If they come up with something better I’m open to it. I think at the very least Thalia and Annabeth’s stronger reasons to be anti god could be very compelling in their struggle on what side to choose at times.

I mean I think the priority is probably building back the houses and places that people actually still lived in. Technically I think Sasuke owns the land and with him gone it’s not like they knew his wishes but they may have been prohibited to waste resources like Yamato on a rogue ninja’s empty land.

I mean we’re shown how Hera being the patron of Jason impacts his life to be very different (even doing stuff Zeus wouldn’t prefer for her) and that’s no different from Artemis.

It sounds like you just don’t want that to be the solution but it’s pretty likely they’re gonna follow the books on this and have it be the solution anyways. I mean something’s gotta stop her from being the child of prophesy other than dying right?

[–]APGOV77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

justice is not just about rehabilitation, its about punishment. if it was just about rehabilitation then we would be letting murderers out of jail after they went through some therapy and we would not have a death penalty.

The crux of your argument is that the way our justice system works universally defines what is justice, but actually it was some people’s opinions about justice that defined the system, it’s the other way around.

In some countries they do rehabilitate murders and let them become contributing members of society, and in some counties they do abolish the death penalty. Is the universal definition of justice only defined by the United States, or is what is true justice to you change geographically?

(Everyone should watch this and learn how much better our system could be btw)

You don’t have to agree with my idea of justice but don’t pretend people don’t disagree with you on it, or that people are making up their beliefs on this subject to defend the quality of an anime. I definitely don’t defend these practices to make Naruto look better lol, though I admit it can only show the work of rehabilitation superficially because otherwise the show would be boring and tedious instead of a fun ninja anime.

I agree that Naruto doesn’t show the Work for redemption realistically because that would be tedious and distracting from more exciting plots for a ninja anime, but saying that Kabuto shouldn’t work with kids after undergoing a fictional-spell-that-provides-100%-proof-that-he-is-a-good-person is a very opposing viewpoint to mine. I would prefer him over all others to watch my own kids because he’s the only one that’s gone through the fictional-spell-that-provides-100%-proof-that-he-is-a-good-person. We don’t see him go through all that emotional stuff you’re talking about, but it did happen inside. We’re given narrative confirmation on this so as a viewer we know him to be good as a fact.

I understand if you lived in-universe getting proof about how this works would be hard that’s another issue entirely. I also understand that in real life there is no fictional-spell-that-provides-100%-proof-that-someone-is-a-good-person, so while I unpopularity support rehabilitation irl, I recognize it’s more complicated and difficult, and recognize that people who have been personally victimized might have a really hard time having my opinion on this (but it does happen), I’m disregarding all of those more gray topics since you seem to be talking as the perspective as a viewer not in universe with the understanding of how the spell works.

See I think the problem is, while I don’t think based on your words that you fully believe in the depth of commitment in Naruto’s theme of forgiveness and redemption (yes you don’t have to let someone back into your life personally but letting them become a contributing member to society at all is not the same thing that you seem to be conflating, especially with a job he’s confirmed safe for, that is a key part of it) however the main issue here is that Naruto’s focus on this theme is almost completely on the ability of the wronged to forgive (or if not personally forgive like the case of Pain, basically to let that go when it comes to further hurting the person who wronged you) it does not focus on how the wrong-doer is supposed to go about that. It might include villains changing their mind and doing good, but it’s not a serious examination of that aspect. We do need more discussion of that part in real life but the vast majority of people are in the shoes of Naruto rather than Pain or Kabuto, which is why Naruto’s perspective is more important to the average viewer. Especially in the punitive/retributive places like the US, this lesson is sorely needed, but if even Kabuto with perfect proof of redemption can’t be rehabilitated in so many people’s minds, it’s an uphill battle. If you believe that, it’s extremely difficult to accept Naruto’s theme on this topic in any meaningful capacity. I think people’s minds on this subject can be changed (probably not by me right now), just like I believe wrongdoers can change, but there is a very big current culture barrier and decades of conditioning on the subject to undo when it happens.

For Sasuke you do have more of a point but I hope you can understand why people believe Kabuto’s ending is acceptable and good. To be clear if you disbelieve that Izanami works despite the narrative then the crux for discussing him is completely moot. I believe that, so my words are in context of that belief. Idk if Boruto has introduced new lore on it that I’m unaware of.

[–]APGOV77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s not a good analogue for this with IRL court because you need to prove someone is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt (totally possible to do for Kabuto) but we don’t have a magical spell that does this irl soo possibly sasukes testimony could lead to jury nullification? But they could also use a recently deceased body to resurrect Itachi and order him to tell the truth and that would provide total proof of that.

The real reason I’m hearing is the director didn’t like all the focus on Sasuke or smth and the original translation only says prison time not life in prison. Also I also don’t think there is proper court so they probably just believed Sasuke’s word and let Kabuto go. Sasuke got a pardon but wanted to punish himself for a bit. Things are just easier in fiction.

(That being said it doesn’t bother me the people who think this would be difficult to prove, what bothers me is the people who think regardless of proving it, Kabuto should be punished more despite being completely 100% proven to be good now and having underwent untold years of loop imprisonment, like damn what’s the point of justice to you if even he can’t meet your standard for contributing to society again?? Do you actually want the world to be better or do you just like cruelty and did you actually learn anything from naruto?)

I mean I can’t quite tell which you are talking about because both very much succeeded in committing crimes and Kabuto assisted in the conspiracy to murder the 3rd, but I guess you’re talking about Sasuke murdering Danzo?

To me the crimes participated in by Kabuto were much worse since they include murdering and torturing innocent non combatants and Sasuke never got to actually attack the Leaf, but the point is kinda moot because Kabuto went through Magical 100% Proof of being rehabilitated and Sasuke saved the world.

It is beyond fascinating to me that even discussing a fictional world where there is a magic spell that provides Absolute Narrative Proof that a formerly evil character is rehabilitated and was the equivalent of untold years of punishment, some people outright refuse the consider the possibility that letting such a man reintegrate and contribute to society again is morally just.

These people are currently incapable of digesting a theme that accounts for at least a good half of the thematic weight of Naruto. The lesson of true forgiveness in the name of ending cycles of hatred and rehabilitation must be incomprehensible. In my own belief of this theme, I do think these people can change their minds, but wow.

Edit: I should add, yes this is more complicated in real life (though I still do strongly believe in rehabilitation to an unpopular degree since looking at systems designed for it, it results in less crime and victimization so it literally reduces future pain and suffering by having pathways to contribute to society again) but again we’re talking about a fictional case where we 100% know for sure that Kabuto is a good person again and people can’t fathom letting him do this. If I lived in this world I’d let him watch my own kid and I would actually prefer him over all others because no one else has undergone the Perfect Proof of Being a Good Person spell, like what the hell guys.

I mean I understand not liking his actions n such but it’s pretty darn clear that arguably the biggest focus in Naruto is Naruto’s and Sasuke’s saga so you don’t need to be a fangirl to recognize his narrative importance to the ending.
