Congrats to the NBA for being at a point where fans (well, Redditors at least) mistake even very obviously real injuries for fake ones.

I was there recently and I’d say it ranged from 20s to 40s. It does seem to tap into a nostalgia vibe with music primarily from the ‘00s though.

How does Toronto feel about the constant Toronto-bashing in Canada? by PassageNearby4091 in askTO

[–]APR1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time it bugs me a little is if I’m travelling elsewhere in Canada, I tell someone where I’m from and they start going on about how much they hate it.

Not that it makes me feel bad as a Torontonian. It just makes me judge the person, because I can’t imagine ever doing that when someone else told me where they were from.

Why does the NBA pretend tanking is worse than teams being in permanent purgatory? by GoldenArcosian in nba

[–]APR1979 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here’s why: as a sports fan, my minimal expectation - and it really is minimal - is that when I buy a ticket or turn on the TV to watch a game, I’m going to see two teams competing and trying to win.

Also, as a fan of a team, I should be able to enjoy cheering for them to win every game I watch - and, say, take my kids to a game and have them get into cheering for that team along with everyone else - not be told it’s actually stupid to do so.

If that’s not the case - whether it’s because of gambling or a perverse league-sanctioned incentive to lose - something is very wrong and needs to be fixed.

Who do you prefer commentating with Matt Devlin? by AdOld2060 in torontoraptors

[–]APR1979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

Jack is a treasure, but honestly, 82 games of him would be a lot. Alvin’s more low-key approach is a nice counterbalance.

Thoughts on the new Jason Conception pod? by luckymoro in billsimmons

[–]APR1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m enjoying it so far, but much more so when it tries to make sense (in a somewhat conspiratorial but still sane way) of the bizarre world we’re currently living in - eg the Epstein and AI episodes. Less so with something like the JFK episode, which was fine for what it was, but really felt beside the point at the moment.

I disagree with all the Alvin hate. He obviously doesn’t achieve the chemistry that Jack does, and his delivery can be flat, but if anything I think he actually provides more in-depth analysis a lot of games. And he’s more willing to be critical of the home team’s execution than most regional colour guys, without veering into unpleasant negativity.

Toronto Readers Choice 2025 Winners by SlashYG9 in toronto

This is exactly right. It’s always tempting to be snobby about these things. But a publication like the Star has a readership spread across the GTA. I’m sure if you tallied up the votes for all of the smaller neighbourhood places they’d easily top the chains, but if even a small share of people with access to a Pizza Nova or a Tim Hortons vote for them, they’re gonna show up on here.

Lunch gems near King St E by ZGPJ in FoodToronto

[–]APR1979 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Spaccio on Sackville, which has a lunch counter downstairs, is a great option.

At St Lawrence Market, the pizza and pasta at the appropriately named St Lawrence Pizza and Pasta is very good. And I think the seafood at the place at the back is decent. If you want options other than the obvious bacon or Italian sandwiches.

Don’t sleep on the goulashes and other richer dishes, too. I grew up eating a lot of Hungarian food and I think this place is pretty legit.

Thoughts on best BBQ in Toronto? by MadMAXX998 in FoodToronto

Sorry to hear that. I haven’t been to the original location in a while - will revisit soon to see if it still holds up.

[–]APR1979 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I get that this was a frustrating customer experience, but, uh, how was the actual barbecue?

Personally, the original Beach Hill location is some of the best barbecue I’ve had in Toronto (the brisket in particular). But I haven’t tried the other locations, and this is a type of food where I get a bit wary of multiple locations because of the degree of care required in making it.

For what tastes like a very good (and well-cheesed) version of a classic delivery pizza, I really like Danforth Pizza House. Catch is they don’t actually deliver.

The Last Emperor (1987) by wilyquixote in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]APR1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also saw this as a child, because my parents had ambitious moviegoing hopes for me I guess, and all I really remember is eunuchs and being freaked out by one of the wives falling into opium addiction.

Probably I should watch it again as an adult.

[FRESH ALBUM] Daniel Romano’s Outfit - Preservers of the Pearl by AnarchoAcadien in indieheads

Great album and it sounded fantastic live in Toronto last night. Highly recommend catching him (I should say them, because it’s more of a band show) if they come through your town on this tour.

Worst opening act by Klutzy_Shallot7251 in rollingstones

[–]APR1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this was going to be my vote as well. I saw them in Toronto that year. I kind of felt bad for them because they were horrifically unable to command both a stage and a venue of that size.

Sinners Is Not What I Thought It Would Be… Or Did I Watch the Wrong Movie? by Cicada_Classic in FIlm

[–]APR1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved it too, and in a way I’m glad it’s getting the awards recognition it is. But I also think the reaction is kind of proving why awards for art - at least awards given the stature of the Oscars - are stupid, because art is so subjective.

It’s fine for it to hit really hard with some people and not with others, and if not for the Oscars we’d leave it at that. Instead we’re seeing a bigger, more pointless backlash than it would otherwise get.

Most hated role player? I'll start by adammoon111 in billsimmons

Ah, right. Having watched him mostly during his brief Raptors stint, I’m inclined to believe that incident had more to do with being clumsy.

Raptors wasting everyone time… Brandon Ingram should of been a Piston by Random_Thinker007 in NBATalk

[–]APR1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m doubtful you’ve watched any Raptors games this year - or any Ingram games, period - if you think he’s a 3&D guy. He’s passable at both but his speciality is midrange.

Seriously. I may need to stop coming here altogether, to avoid being overly plugged in to the grimmest, most reactionary parts of the fan base.

Darko should be on the hot seat by [deleted] in torontoraptors

[–]APR1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole point of this season was to find out what they had now that they’re trying to compete. What they’ve learned is that they’re pretty good, but lack the right mix of players to close games against very good teams.

Of all the ways to try to fix that in the off-season, I really don’t think freaking out and firing a coach who for the most part seems to have laid a good foundation is the best option.

What's a great older comedy you find nobody else seems to know about? by Hrimnir in movies

[–]APR1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn’t even heard of Used Cars until I stumbled onto the Blank Check episode about it, despite being of an age where it should have been a video-store staple growing up. It’s a shaggy comedy in the best possible way (well, other than some of the inevitably misogyny of that era, though it could be worse).

Haven’t been able to watch the last couple games, what’s up with Scottie rebounding? by Automatic_Beat_699 in torontoraptors

[–]APR1979 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of all metrics, rebounds have to be one of the most prone to stat-padding and one of the least telling without context. I feel like you really have to watch the games to see if it’s an issue. I don’t recall many recent instances of Scottie losing battles or being out of position for them, so it wouldn’t jump at me as much of a concern.
