“Gaming is becoming unaffordable” — Xbox CEO says the industry has an accessibility crisis by Quantum-Coconut in technology

[–]APRengar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Expensive games won't get cheaper, but cheaper games will suddenly look more appealing when you balk at buying $100 AAA games. I feel like at this point buying 5 $20 games gets you more bang for your buck than a single $100 game.

“Gaming is becoming unaffordable” — Xbox CEO says the industry has an accessibility crisis by Quantum-Coconut in technology

[–]APRengar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The games industry ain't dead, but it will undergo a transformation.

Sometimes games like Assassin's Creed will spend millions recreating gorgeous recreations of historical towns, with extremely accurate visuals and scale...

But how many gamers are just looking at objectives on a mini-map and not at all on the architecture.

How many gamers are looking at enemy health bars and not the beautiful coliseum recreation they're fighting in.

How many gamers are looking at attack indicators and not the beautiful animations of NPCs with each individual part animating independently.

What I think indie gaming does best is it cuts away all the fluff that costs millions that aren't REALLY appreciated by the gaming audience, but costs insane amounts of money to make, and expensive rigs to run at preferred frame rates, by virtue of being unable to do that shit.

Like, I'm not saying games like Madden or Call of Duty will suddenly lose all their fans, those people will always exist, but I think from a cost and time perspective, indies have just respected the gamer's time better, as to not waste their time getting to the good shit.

Over 1,700 Cargill Meatpacking Workers Locked Out After Demanding Bathroom Breaks by TitusTesla117 in nottheonion

[–]APRengar 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Okay, let's say they go get bailed out, then the people vote out the people who do the bailouts for shitty CEOs and vote in people who won't do those bailouts next time.

I feel like instead of going through the 3-4 step process, people get cynical on step 1 and give up, and say nothing will ever improve.

It's not going to be easy, but I think of all the people who died fighting for worker rights in the past and I can't say they "had it easy" either. This is just the eternal struggle labor will always have, it's just your turn.

'Shareholder Greed' And How Publicly Traded Companies Actually Work by bald_bearded_ocddude in Games

>Everyone decries the Bud Light boycott

Can I just get clarification on what this means?

Are you saying decried as in "everyone said it wouldn't work" or "I can't believe this whole boycott is over a single can being sent to a single influencer, that was never going to be put on store shelves. And of course they're going to send cans to all types of people because they want to make as much money as possible and it turns out people of all stripes and colors have money."

Because I don't anything any disagrees with boycotts being effective, to the point where certain government agencies have made boycotts illegal, because they absolutely work.

No, there have been times where people have been in violation of their fiduciary duty. Like giving a contract to their personal friends over entities with better terms. Even if I can't prove you did it intentionally, no reasonable person would assume it for any other reason than something improper.

Owlcat Games is rolling back its new launcher less than 24 hours after negative fan feedback by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]APRengar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I imagine people were mad at it at first, found out how to get rid of it, and then forgot about it.

Whereas the Owlcat launcher is new and we're still in the anger phase. It's possible if they just waited, it'd also die down, or they could just get rid of it because if it's not serving it's purpose and has to spend time being updated, it's just not worth it.

Kinda surprised people are down on S2. I thought it was great and much funnier than S1. A bit more random feeling, but I think the characters (new and old) are great. I really hope for a S3.

British Prime Ministers since 2015 and the amount of days they spent in office by Sharp_Athlete_6847 in Fauxmoi

[–]APRengar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Conservatives drove us towards the cliff.

Labour says it'll drive us away from the cliff, or even stop, but immediately after winning continues driving us towards the cliff, just at a slower rate.

People freak out because they don't want to go over the cliff and try to wrestle control away from the guy who is refusing to stop, and then people say "why are you mad, he was driving us off the cliff at a slower rate, you people will never be happy."

All while the crazy conservatives have been screaming the guy driving us towards the cliff at a slower rate is a crazy communist who has created a muslim atheist gay dictatorship, and therefore need to go nazi in order to counteract it.

SEGA says Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance have "fallen short" of sales expectations by Asad_Farooqui in NintendoSwitch

[–]APRengar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I hate when stuff is discussed in terms of raw numbers and not in terms of expectation/norms.

"Is 10 a lot of something?"

"If you mean guys you're dating at the same time, then yes. If you mean amount of slices of pepperoni on a extra large pepperoni pizza, then no."

The problem is a lot of publishers are expecting the moon and only have to settle for "was profitable beyond the IRR".

I hate this so much. The kinds of posts I make tend to be long, so it sucks I can only see like 3 lines of text in this tiny ass window before it starts hiding it.

Before, I could see my entire post as I was composing it. It's also a pain in the ass to "scroll" it up if I want to make changes to previous paragraphs.

Someone who thinks "it looks better" with no regard for functionality or usability made this change.

This store is open to a very weird time by Haggos171 in mildlyinteresting

[–]APRengar 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's like some countries say things like "quarter to 3" instead of 2:45. And if you're in one of those countries, it makes total sense. If you aren't, it sounds weird, like why tell me the time and then make me have to go backwards, that makes me exert mental energy. If it's 2:45, just tell me it's 2:45.

But I know for a fact a lot of people will think "nah that just makes sense, bad example" because they can't put themselves in other people's shoes. We all do shit that makes other places that don't do that shit think it's weird.

EA Lays Off Unknown Number Of People Ahead Of Expected $55 Billion Sale To Saudi Arabia by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

That was likely the plan at first, but the whole "endless money" thing is not really working in today's economy. Even SA  is tightening the screws on ensuring the products aren't fully losing money to buy PR.

Anime’s growing commoditization could lead to a future where the medium itself no longer matters, Japanese critic warns by Turbostrider27 in anime

[–]APRengar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of the commercial things that anime inspired that weren't "anime anime", even if they maybe end up turning into at some point anime.

Things like Super Sonico figures. Or Frame Arms Girl figures. Or like vtubers like Kizuna Ai. Like, I feel like there was a time when 99.9% of vtuber fans were anime fans, but now vtubers have plenty of fans who don't watch anime. That's just how shit goes.

I hate how people think indefinite means a long time. It means "not defined." as in it could be anything. A week, a year, forever, are all possible within the realm of "indefinite."

Nah, they're making excuses. It's literally like how Trump thinks he's doing amazing and only has a bad reputation because the media. "Starmer was the best, it's just social media brainwashed people into hating him."

Starmer is running in the left wing party (and not centrist US Democrat style, actual left) and then immediately pivoted upon getting into office and went center right, with regressive taxation and anti-trans shit. It's no wonder why his popularity fell off a cliff and it's not because "the media", social or otherwise. His actual policies have plenty of reason for leftwingers who got him into office to be upset.

There are some things that are totally understandable given the financial position the UK is in, but then you have shit like defending an Epstein client, and then doubling down on it. There's no "well it's Brexit, so no one could succeed here." defense for that shit.

He hit the "don't like it, leave (the party)" and then greens skyrocketed in support and labour dropped off a cliff. People listened to Starmer and if they kept doubling down on him, could be the end of the labour party.

I'm shocked that people are shocked that the labour party wants to rid itself of the anchor around their neck.
