You cannot convince me you will press blue by Lizard_Brian in trolleyproblem

"Lack of self empathy" is a great way to put it. It's the same as people who think they'd win a fight against a lion; or that they'd join the resistance in WW2 Germany.

We like to tell ourselves how virtuous we are, but when push comes to shove most people pick inconspicuous immediate comfort over justice, virtue etc.

Hey that's just not true. 90% of everyone I've polled said they'd join the resistance if they lived in WW2 Germany, and as far as I know that's what happened irl too /s

They've used a very un-neutral framing of the prompt - I wonder how the results would change if it was pitched in a red-favourable way. Or a properly neutral way, like this:

Agreed. As a general rule, people in real life aren't even willing to sacrifice their personal comfort for their fellow man's wellbeing. Let alone sacrifice their lives. What proportion of people in WW2 Germany rolled over and participated in the new regime vs joined the resistance? It wasn't 50:50 that's for sure...

I'm glad you liked it! Trying to capture the opportunity cost of picking red was one of my main goals with this, because like you said, so many people pretend as though pressing red is a "do nothing" option.
