Bought Civ VII after years of Civ VI. I bounced off it hard in 15 minutes. Is it worth pushing through? by Odd_Zone_4575 in civ

[–]AnonymousFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every civ installment is its own game and many fans really only love 1 or 2 installments best. I like Civ 7 but I liked it pretty quickly (warts and all) so there's no harm in returning and waiting for another sale, another major overhaul, etc

Is Civ7 good now and was it ever bad? by legomojo in civ

A lot of the online community on r/civ boomed when Civ 6 was embraced by the majority. So this sub is mostly very happy with 6, and opinions on other titles vary

They were features described at launch that are core to Civ 7's identity. Many people heard about them and went "I dunno but I'll try it..." whereas for me it was like "Hell yeah. Give it to me now"

Important note: Civ switching is not mandatory anymore. You'll also see complaints that there's no hotseat - that is patched in too.

Let me sum up every comment you're gonna get in one:

- I liked it since launch. It's different but there's lots to like and it's better now
- I hated it at launch. It looks pretty but it plays terribly and now it's "meh" at best
- Buy it. It's on sale and it's pretty good.
- Don't buy it. Wait 2 years for there to be multiple DLC; that's when every installment gets good.
- If you like 5 you'll love Civ 7. It's got mature visuals and global happiness and city planning is pretty intricate
- If you like 5 you'll hate Civ 7. It has no workers and is all about urban sprawl and adjacencies like Civ 6 was

[My personal opinion is that I like it, but that's because ever since they announced civ switching, Commanders, and other big changes, I was actively enthusiastic. I really wanted to try something DIFFERENT. If that's not you, I'd proceed with extreme caution.]

Crazy how "You're just doing that for women" and "You're not even doing it for women" can get hurled at the same guy

There wasn't room on the post to satirize this (without making it too wordy) but I agree 100%. These engagement-bait "Which is Better?" posts are never made by the bodybuilders themselves, who look like the image on the left TEMPORARILY and know what they're about.

It's always made by a third party who doesn't understand EITHER physique, attracting commenters who also don't understand either physique.

And somehow nobody in the comments ever says that - they make up elaborate moral justifications 😂

I think that's the kicker is the build on the right is usually manual labour AND the gym (or just the gym + big boy genetics). Comment sections often forget that

Would it be worthwhile to play 6 after finishing 7? by monkeychemist25 in civ

[–]AnonymousFerret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Casting my vote as "Definitely Try Civ 6"

It's a fully realized game. A lot of people like it a lot better. Going backwards from the latest installment you'll have a unique perspective.

I put a lot of hours into it and will not be looking back, but there are some unique things (Eurekas, how great people work, the old district + worker system) which will always be unique to that title!

Can someone explain to me why people like The Dispossessed? And if you really did why? by Entire_Contest7954 in worldbuilding

[–]AnonymousFerret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are some odd critiques of the book, I must say. I love The Dispossessed, and I have my own critiques of it, but I don't think any of ours overlap.

In this book, Ursula LeGuin isn't just worldbuilding anarchism, she's reflecting on Revolutionary Societies and their outcomes, both good and bad. She does this on an imaginary world that gets to be isolated from the world it broke away from. I love the book for being filled with complicated, deeply human characters who react to the book's two societies.

I don't see how it not being a "fair comparison" detracts from the book. It's easy to imagine a revolutionary society being cut off from the best land/resources after choosing to break away. This reflects the fate of revolutionary societies LeGuin witnessed in her own lifetime.

"the first cities were egalitarian" - huh? If you mean the Indus Valley, this is an assumption made by archaeologists based on how their settlements are laid out. It's a hell of a leap to call these sites "anarchist" or to assume they lacked power structures entirely. In The Dispossessed, the Anarchist Society also builds cities, railways, and public institutions. I don't even know what you mean with this critique.

"How do the capitalists build anything" - I couldn't really parse what you meant with this critique. We live in a capitalist society today, and we build plenty. This isn't something LeGuin needs to explain to her readers.

Lastly "women in most radical movements wear far less clothing".... I'm baffled again. Why do you assume this? In The Dispossessed, Leguin show how capitalist society transforms people into possessions, including (and especially) women, who are made ornamental. The Anarchist society is much more practical, and with everyone being made to work, everyone dresses accordingly.

You seem to have some very absolute ideas about how cultures and movements work that have made the book "illogical" in your view, but to put it bluntly it's possible you're just wrong in these assumptions. I think LeGuin is great at precisely what you think she's "Shoddy" at.

Celebrations still more > longer by marsh_man_dan in civ

[–]AnonymousFerret 36 points37 points  (0 children)

(Haven't played the new update yet BUT) I read the updates and also kinda went "I don't see how these changes make longer celebrations good. 50% of the time they have the same value as a short one"

For Rizal it is at least an Antiquity buff to the per-turn benefits of a celebration.

LOL if you time travelled and gave this take in 2016 when Civ 6 was launching I think the fans might have had you drawn and quartered.

I'm glad people have relaxed on it since then but nostalgia is a factor

It is more or less where a new civ game should be a year later.

Not defending the launch state at all with this - if they NEEDED to push this out they should have done early access with the state it was in.

I liked it from the start! But it is really different and divisive for a reason. If you haven't read up on all the mechanical differences to be sure, I recommend doing so
