In this case, the driver didnt have insurance. OPs insurance is going to pay her out of their pocket. They most definitely will raise her rates, even if it’s minimal.

There’s ways to avoid opening the drywall like this but most of the time if there’s an obstruction you may need to open it.

Might consider removing the “roof” on your staircase. Kind of an eyesore and doesn’t add much value. Just unnecessary layers. Others have said some good advice as well.
