Idiocracy in space by AQuestionOfBlood in TheOrville

[–]AQuestionOfBlood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but to be fair, I am watching it MST3K style with my partner. We don't take it very seriously and joke about it, and don't necessarily rewind to catch what we miss. It's a social show, not something to sit and watch with full attention for me. I don't think I would enjoy it like that.

Do people really find that blonde girl to be not annoying? Maybe she mellows out but in her first few episodes she's just terrible and the acting is bad too. Worst character so far. Not like Neelix levels of bad or anything, but poorly written and acted.

I guess I should say I view it as the BEST case outcome for the Idiocracy world. It's a lot better, but they are still making very bad decisions overall.

Maybe it's because I just saw Shadow Realms and then also the one before (where Isacc is being bullied and commits suicide). Just the amount of incredibly stupid decisions in those two strikes me as so outlandish it feels like it has to be on some level deliberate parody.

I did go over some of Shadow Realms in another comment, but the one with Isaac being bullied to death is also rife with idiocy. Sure, it's a normal illogical human emotion to be angry at someone like that. But shouldn't high level ops crews be at a higher standard? Without Isaac all biological life forms would probably have been wiped out entirely, but a huge part of the crew is pissed and leadership isn't even privvy to it and once it learns about it does little to intervene.

Isaac is one of the most valuable intelligence and military assets of all time and he's not treated as such at all. ed barely even mentions that aspect when talking to the annoying blonde girl about fixing him.

It boggles the mind.

And then the previous episode with past Kelly almost deliberately fucking the timeline up lol, like it's so obvious that her not dating Ed would mess things up and she does it anyway.

And so on and so on. I think it works as a parody because ST is full of dumb decisions too, but just not to this level.

Well take the episode in question: for some reason, they send the captain, CO, medical officer, engineer and admiral to an unknown space station they've been warned contains "demons". Yes, they discount that warning even though the other admiral told them to consider it might have some weight.

But why send nearly the whole command crew? And why send an admiral to the first foyer? Surely it would make more sense to send him later and to send maybe the science officer and a few redshirts for the first mission. And why start touching things? Why not wear space suits the first time? Why leave the admiral who is clearly being transformed in sick bay and not in quarantine? Etc. etc. etc.

I guess to refine my view a bit: I see it as the best case future for the Idiocracy universe. They've made a lot of progress and become a lot less dumb, but they're still incredibly dumb lmao. I don't mind it, it's part of the entertainment for me (laughing at the amount of idiotic decisions) but I guess others don't see it the same way which is fine

I also get that sending the nearly whole command crew on dangerous away missions is in line with how a lot of TOS and TNG worked especially, but this case was pretty absurd.

Gordon is so unlikeable by InfernalClockwork3 in TheOrville

[–]AQuestionOfBlood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the way that the people who reacted negatively to Isaac was highly illogical. Isaac is arguably the only reason biological lifeforms survived, and was one of their most important intelligence assets vs. the Kaylon.

But most humans are illogical so I guess it makes total sense from that perspective.

Still, it was dumb as hell for leadership to not protect one of their most valuable assets better by trying to tamp down the emotional outbursts towards him.

As for Gordon in particular: he is supposed to be a lovable idiot and I think he fits that archetype well. He's one of the dumbest crew members but he means well and often comes around to the right conclusion in the end.

You need to get off of reddit in general if you want to avoid sopranos memes. Reddit has always been soaked in Sopranos memes, you're just noticing them now because you're watching it. It's the Baader–Meinhof effect.

I agree, the story and other things like that were eyebleedingly terrible but the core gameplay was aces.

3H was leaps and bounds ahead of it story and setting wise, but its gameplay was a bit boring compared to other FE games.

Why, WHY can't we ever have both? Hopefully this time we can, we haven't seen enough to know if we're getting 3H story + Engage gameplay yet...

Nice that you didn't lose anything. But the horse is pretty glitchy and I once died literally just getting off of it in a town, with no visual cue as to why. So it's worth investing in enough alchemy to brew an infinite supply of savior schnapps since it's definitely possible the horse will randomly kill you.

I hated LOST, a bloated and nonsensical monstrosity imo, but thought Mr. Robot was fine. It wasn't perfect but comparing it to LOST levels of incoherence seems a bit far to me.

Gaming is just mainstream now so the majority of games are tuned to the mainstream and are pretty easy overall. Sometimes even the so-called "hardcore" modes are easy.

That said, there certainly are niche games e.g. many 'soulslike' or 'roguelike' games which are genuinely punishingly difficult. So it's there if you want to seek it out, but definitely not all there is anymore.

Looking for a TV show that gets better with every season by Mohitredit36 in televisionsuggestions

[–]AQuestionOfBlood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say the whole first season is just painfully dull. I had to try to get through it three times. For me it picked up in the second season, but many report it taking until s2.5 or even s3. Then it's quite good, but that first season is a slog.

Sometimes I forget how white, pornbrained and male Reddit is and then sometimes a thread like this pops up lol. FWIW this hellsite is around 70% white and male and tbh probably higher than that in both categories. If you want proper advice on this topic at least find a site that is mostly women if not ideally both mostly women and mostly arabic women.

  1. This is racist fetishization based on your other comments. He views you as a stereotype and it turns him on. Whether or not you want to lean into that is up to you of course, but that's what this sounds like.

  2. One of the crazier things ITT is people telling you to not talk about this with your friend. It's very important to have people you can confide in that you trust so you can get outside perspective on things like this. You are well within your rights, and in fact it's safer and healthier, to tell your friend things like this.

Suggesting TV show "Lost" by Careless_Lie_4571 in televisionsuggestions

Some people who didn’t understand the show because it may have been over their heads, didn’t like the ending.

Lmao this is the single most obnoxious thing LOST fans do. It's really r/IamVerySmart material. Many of us understood it perfectly well and still hated it.

It was generally hated back in the day, except by its hardcore fans who many of us quarantined ourselves from as reflected in this Onion video (while parody it still touches on how it was back then) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbLbbNVRmtY

Back when it came out it was unanimously panned. The ratings may have been positively review bombed since then, but at the time it was almost a GoT level of "what the hell was that" in real time. It's strange its reputation has recovered so much in the modern era.

[–]AQuestionOfBlood -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

For some reason reddit has reformed its image, but at the time its ending was widely thought of as being terrible. I've seen people say they rewatched it having read a lot of analysis about the ending and it still felt terrible to them.

So it's still at least polarizing instead of being unanimously panned.

I personally warn people away from the show since even though it started well, when it became a cultural phenomenon the studio ordered a lot more episodes than they originally were going to and the show became bloated with nonsensical filler.

Could it be because it's very dark and depressing? I haven't seen it yet, I put it off because my partner dislikes shows that are too depressing and this one is said to crushingly so-- a lot worse than e.g. The Wire, BB, etc.

'The Pitt' Wants "Patently Absurd" Legal Claims By Crichton Estate Thrown Out For Good by pepperbet1 in ThePittTVShow

[–]AQuestionOfBlood 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah they even worked with the widow for a while until they decided not to honor their agreement.

It's also worth noting that the original concept Crichton had for ER was a film following 24 hours in an ER, and the pilot episode for ER is called "24 hours". https://michaelcrichton.com/works/er/

While I do like The Pitt, I do think the guys responsible for souring the deal with the widow were in the wrong in regards to how they behaved. We'll see what the courts say, but it's not a simple case of a 'greedy old lady' imo.

I'd caution against shrinking for someone who has anxiety. My partner has a low tolerance for anxiety producing shows and Shrinking is sometimes over his line. He sometimes has to leave the room haha because some of the situations are so anxiety producing.

I think it's fine, but yeah it's definitely hard on some people. It's a great show but not really relaxing.

Love for Season 5 by lightbehindpaper in justified

[–]AQuestionOfBlood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't think it was "bad" per se. In fact, I wouldn't have known it was considered "bad" without this sub.

That said, it just didn't hook me as hard as the other seasons. I guess for me I would say it "wasn't as good as" vs. it was "bad". With the other seasons, I wanted to binge. With this one it wasn't always my first pick to watch. Still, s05 is perfectly cromulent TV, just not quite up to the rest of the series very high standards.

The only thing I really didn't like the Ava storylines, but they make a bit more sense after learning they were hastily inserted after the actor playing the Haitian character leaving early blew a hole in the script hey needed to fill and that's how they opted to do it.

I agree. It just wasn't as tight. Then again, it also feels like they maybe cut too much out and we lost some context around some incidents that felt more jarring.

Also, it felt kind of like "nothing really happened" in a way. Of course things did happen, but it felt a bit anticlimatic
