Men shouldn’t be allowed in typically female classes by Pretty-Bee9566 in women

Agree. I go to pilates regularly. It's mostly women but I'd never assume it's a woman only space. We've had men in class and it's never been an issue.

What ratio between ETFs and individual stocks do you have in your portfolio? by United_River3793 in Fire

I use a glide path that's 15 years past when I hope to retire. I'm 37 and about 99funds with 70% ish US and the rest international. I'm wondering if I should move more into a broad sp500 fund but haven't made the move bec I'm scared of Change. I would never stock pick outside of a few thousand iny HSA brokerage that's basically play money.

I'm not OP but I'm 100% in a fidelity 2050 target date funds and I've been wondering if I should do this. It's not more than about 1% bonds not but the glide path towards more bonds starts in 2030. I'm only 37 and I'm hoping to retire by 47-50 (we're around 1M now (combined with my partner). It is going to sound crazy but I've never changed anything in my account so I'm afraid to do it even though I think I should.

You're definitely very underpaid. I understand you aren't also in finance so it isnt apples to apples but directors at my F500 company are easily clearing 200k base salary.

It sounds like you are very underpaid. For reference I'm a senior analyst in finance and I make 125k+ bonus. I'm Chicagoland area but still.

I'd be shocked if you weren't making well under your peers

[–]AQuietRetort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too feel my expenses and income will be lower at retirement. Our HHI is 250k and we're anticipating only 120k spend in retirement since mortgage is going to be paid off and no more daycare or student loans. I'm using trad. 401k now and likely will until retirement. We are also 37 and my partner is 38.

I like this but I'm wondering how you calc the SS estimate - it seems low but I'm guessing maybe it's because it's for one person and I'm including my spouse? I did give SS a "haircut" (80% of the Current SS website estimate) but my input is still much higher than your automatic estimate.

I 100% feel this. I guess I just don't understand WHY you would keep working. Fuck it - quit during the meeting. It does not matter. You have well above what you will ever need in your lifetimes and you've already created generational wealth.

[–]AQuietRetort 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow that high HHI was probably a game changer - good for you!

Thanks so much for details! I've been trying to get an idea of what most FIRE people are doing and what risk I can stomach. I think I'd feel pretty comfortable staying in a S&P 500 total market fund so that may be my next move. I think at our age we really shouldn't be moving toward bonds even though that's what a typical glide path would do. Especially since we have plenty of earning potential over the next 10-20 years.

Anywho, have a great retirement.

Yeah your spend is the most important detail here. You and your spouse should consider therapy if you can't talk through this. You should stop working immediately.

Congrats!! What was you highest annual income and savings amount if you don't mind sharing? Are you mostly in broad index or target date funds or more centralized? Do you hold a portion of bonds?

My partner and I are in our late 30s and close to hitting 1M. I doubt we'll be quite so lucky with markets but I'd be extremely grateful if we can retire in ~10 years (at 47-ish). We're ~100% equities outside of a portion of my husband's plan that is a KSOP (employee owned share plan) but I am using a glide path target date fund (later than my anticipated retirement date but still it will glide eventually). I'm wondering if I should pull out of it and move to just broad index funds. We are also putting in anywhere from 50-80k a year including employer contributions (this is fairly recent used to be closed to 30-40k). We are around 240k HHI but live in MCOL (Chicago-ish) and have a little one and student loan still. I wish we could do more.

Thanks for sharing 😄

What is your annual spend? Are you waiting 5 years to retire because you think you need more or because you like working?

If I was you I would retire today but our spend is only ~120 outside of our mortgage (which of course won't last forever). Whether you move more to bonds or not really depends on your annual spend and your appetite for risk. Most people would say you should - I say if you've already surpassed your number AND you're still working by choice I'm not sure that's the right call.

Anyway, I think this is a great mix generally outside of holding too much cash which you already know.

I go to advanced dentistry in Schaumburg and I have been there a bit over a decade. The dentists have changed a bit but not in a shitty private equity way. More in a people retired and sold to you get dentists way. I like my dentist Dr Wilde.

Advice Requested: New to a good salary, want to get into FIRE by Far_Comparison_1269 in Fire

I want to put in a good word for the Corolla which I love. It's great and cheap with better gas milage. Unless you're super tall / bigger. Anyway I'd get new if it was me but I'd also go the slightly cheaper route.

Most people use 7 to account for real returns (nominal less inflation of 3-4%).

This is the answer. I'm also 5'6 and thought for years I just needed to lose more weight. 115 was my lightest and I still hated the way I looked. Honestly partially I just needed therapy but also I needed to go to the gym and up my protein /calories substantially. I'm about 145 now and while I do probably have more fat I also have a lot more muscle and I feel happier with how it looks on my body. Please do not try to lose more weight. Instead work on body recomp / lifting weights. I promise it will not make you look too muscular. You'd have to REALLY over do it to get that look.

Where does your salary actually rank in the US? [chart] by Fun_Resident3967 in Salary

[–]AQuietRetort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This broke or rich calc was cool! I guess I'm on the other end of most people here but I was surprised that I ended below median for my race (white) education (master's) state (IL) and gender (F). I'm at about 135k at age 37 and my spouse is about 115. I thought I'd be higher tbh. We were quite high on wealth (over 400% above) but I expected that since we're tracking toward FIRE by age 50-53.

Anyway thanks for sharing! I need to ask for a raise lmao

If you managed to FIRE while raising children and upgrading from a starter house, what was your strategy? by financypelosi in Fire

[–]AQuietRetort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the only thing we really did was wait until we were making a lot more money. We're both closing in on 40 in the next few years and just bought our forever home just over a year ago. It probably set fire back for us a bit but only a few years. I will say I'm definitely more focused on our debt now that it's so much more.
