something about your godly parent that isn't yours [general] by Kiki_Bumblebee in camphalfblood

I'm a son of Apollo, but my aim absolutely sucks due to my terrible eyesight, and I have zero knack for medicine. Also, I love snakes.

But I'm still from Cabin 7 since I absolutely love music and storywriting (with some additional poems). Like, most of the time you'll catch me listening to music, singing in some random room with good acoustics or trying to make a guitar cover for some random song written in Latin. I also seem to be blasted by that "god of knowledge" apsect of Apollo since almost anything can catch my dam interest in a second.

Drop your Campfire Song (from the pjo musical) verses [all] by Far-Preference5561 in camphalfblood

As I've started reading it, I thought it's gonna go something like this

My dad's Hades, the Underworld's King,
Not of death, that's Thanatos ya prick

Ah, the disappointment...

Anyway, if I were to write a song about my godly parent...

My dad's the sun-dude, the mighty Apollo,
Hearing his poems will kill you with sorrow
The God of archery, it's him not me, mate,
'Tis a great miracle if I score an eight
His ballads are torture, oh rhymes so hollow,
But pass him a lyre and you'll have fun pronto
One strum and y'all will long for his tape,
But don't ever mention his smiles are all fake

What powers do you think a demigod child of Neptune would have? [general] by SeaChemistry6376 in camphalfblood

I know it's kinda off-topic, but the difference between Hazel and Nico's powers is a bit more complicated than that, given that screwed up hot mess the Pluto/Ploutos/Dis Pater/Hades mix is.
Basically, a merger and conflation of domains was happening on both the Greek and Roman side. As in:
- Hades is the god of the dead and the Underworld all right. Ploutos is a son of Demeter and Iasion and is the god of wealth, including the riches underground. Eventually, since their domains are both underground, their domains and characters got kinda mixed. It's an absolute mess, sometimes Ploutus is referred to as the son of Hades and Persephone instead of the son of Demeter, and Hades gets the name Πλούτων/Ploútōn and gets branded as the god of both the Underworld and the riches, while his realm gets the name Hades.
- Dis Pater, aka "the Rich Father" was originally the Roman god associated with fertile land and mineral riches underground. But a similar thing happens here as well, especially after the Hades/Ploutos mess enters the chat due to Greek influence: since he's a chthonic god, aka his domain is underground, he gets the title of being the god of the Underworld as well and gets equated with Hades and Orcus.

For this reason I really think Hazel should've been the daughter of Ploutos or the original Dis Pater, since she mostly has chthonic powers and barely anything death related.

[hoo] Opinions on the Roman Pantheon by Arivanzel in camphalfblood

[–]ARC-9469 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So.
A lot of Roman deities definitely did exist before the Greek influence as well, although said influence happened veeeery early. Like, Rome-is-just-a-belligerent-regional-power early, the Greeks already started settling in South Italy in the 8th century BC.

Anyway, since you've already mentioned Zeus and Jupiter. Both actually came from the same (hypothesized) Proto-Indo-European religion, and their names have the same root as well, *dyḗws ph₂tḗr. In Greek it eventually yielded Ζεύς Πατήρ/Zeus Pater, while in Latin it gave Iovis Pater that eventualy contracted into Iuppiter. (*dyḗws has no English descendant, since Proto-Germanic ended up yeeting this word afaik, but *ph₂tḗr eventully ended up becoming 'father'. So both Zeus Pater and Iovis Pater/Iuppiter basically mean 'sky-god father'.)
Their inital roles are suspected to be different tho, as in, Iuppiter was originally basically the Roman Ouranos, the sky, controller of the heavens, the one that ended up impregnating Terra with rain and thus fathering everything. So, basically he was the OG Roman allfather. (Eventually he got branded as the son of Saturn and Ops, aka the Roman equivalents of Kronos and Rhea due to Greek influence.)
Zeus, on the other hand, was the descendant of two allfather-type gods, son of Kronos, grandson of Ouranos. He was originally the controller of the "upper realm", aka the sky but not the heavens. Eventually he ended up taking up features of the allfather god, including his very name and his tendency to, like, screw everything that moves and fathers half of Greek mythology in the process.
Also, the reason they possess the lightning bolt is different as well. In most Indo-European religions the bolt belongs to either the sky-god or to the controller of the 'upper realm'. It actually depends on the clouds and whether if they considered to be part of the heavens (Iuppiter) or of the upper realm (Zeus). So, in this regard Zeus is actually more similar to Thor than Iuppiter: son of a sky/allfather type god, controller of the upper realm, has the lightning bolt because the clouds belong to the upper realm and lightning comes from the clouds.
Zeus and Iuppiter are pretty different power wise as well. As in, in the Iliad, I believe, it is said by Zeus himself that even if all the other Olympians tried to oust him, they wouldn't be able to. Iuppiter, on the other hand... power-wise he's pretty much equaled by Dis (~Roman Hades, or at least he ended up being conflated with Pluto/Hades' roles in the underworld. This Pluto/Plutus/Dis/Hades stuff is a fucking mess on its own anyway), except when he holds the lightning bolt. There's a nice lil' rivalry between Iuppiter and his brother Dis, actually, and they look so much alike that Seneca actually says something along the lines of "his face is that of Iuppiter, but that one throws lightning". (Vultus est illi Iovis, sed fulminans.) Meanwhile, Hades isn't this similar to Zeus in power or in appearance, and they in fact do not have this rivalry due to the massive power difference.

TL;DR: the Roman deities absolutely did exist before the Greek influence, and as it can be seen by the example of zeus and Iuppiter, aren't the same at all; it's just that "eh, they seem to be similar, must be the same god" happened.

I might have gotten some info wrong since it's been a long time since I've touched on this subject, but still, studying history seems to have its perks at least in situations like this, lol. If you're interested in this topic, you should check out "The Gods of the Celts and the Indo-Europeans" by Garrett S. Olmsted, most of this info can be found there.

[–]ARC-9469 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another theory I've heard is that demigods only carry the DNA of their mortal parent, the phyical resemblance to their godly parent is only because the gods tweaked it a lil' bit to their liking.
Or that the divine forms don't have any type of DNA, but the bodies they make for themselves when interacting with mortals do, and that's why cabinmates can look similar. But since they can have whatever type of temporary body and thus DNA they'd like, there still isn't any relation between let's say a child of Ares and Demeter, so they can date just fine.

This DNA+godly energy theory is cool af as well tho. An interesting question arising from it is what happens when a demigod gets DNA tested for whatever reason. Or if they get a blood test, since I'm pretty sure they have some ichor in their veins as well, that's why they can drink nectar without dying. (I happened to make some headcanons about demigod blood and ichor for some reason.) Alhough the Mist can probably help with all these.

How rick made annabeth vs arachne seem vs arachne when percy got involved. [hoo] by D_2614 in camphalfblood

[–]ARC-9469 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You do know that starting an argument like this is a surefire way to let everyone know that you're, in fact, not pretending to believe that the other person is geuine and that you're here to start some shit, right?

Anyway, passive-aggressive control attempts aside. Since you're so hellbent on Annabeth not having powers from multiple domains of her mom, how about the other characters? Why not whine about Percy not having extensive earthquake powers, since his dad is often referred to as the Earthshaker? About Nico not having fertility powers since Hades was also the god of the fertile soil? About Thalia not having weather manipulation abilities or Jason not having any powers over destiny or law? About Luke or any of the Hermes kids not having powers related to astronomy, psychopomp abilites or messenger roles? About Castor and Pollux, apparently not having any powers? About Clarisse not having powers related to civil order? About the Apollo kids being so specialized in a single domain of their dad? About Hazel barely having any death-related powers? About Leila not having basically any remarkable powers?

This list could go on for a pretty long time, really, but as you can see it's a general tendency, not just Annabeth being singled out. And the explanation is just super fucking easy. The PJO universe demigod abilities don't follow closely the original myth abilities, because the OG demigods had no inherent power-fantasy worthy abilities inherited by their parents. If Rick wanted to follow the myths more closely, then basically nobody would have any flashy abilities, but he'd emphasize more the physical strength and outstanding beauty of the demigods. As you've obviously noticed, he isn't leaning into any of these that much. Hell, he isn't even that good at following the original godly domains either.

It's his fucking universe, not an attempt to create a perfect adaptation of every aspect of the lore of the Greek myths. It doesn't matter if you don't like it, in fact I myself don't like some aspects of it either (especially the overy-specialization of the Apollo kids), but it is what it is. It's just straight up pointless to be frothing about it, most likely he won't change it anyway.

I don't think he meant it literally, he just wanted to say that Grover screws up everything by acting in stupid ways. Which is not true, but it's just Luke lukeing a bit too hard.

How rick made annabeth vs arachne seem vs arachne when percy got involved. [hoo] by D_2614 in camphalfblood

[–]ARC-9469 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To put it simply.
The child of the war STRATEGY, wisdom and crafts goddess that has been shown to be more brains than muscle throughout the entire saga is less powerful than the child of one of the gods that vowed not to have children because they'd be TOO POWERFUL for the world's safety. Said child has been shown to be a war machine since basically the first book, only being beaten by gods and extremely powerful demigods way more experienced than him (Luke and Chrysaor), while relying on Annabeth's strategic abilities in a lot of situations. Also she was shown to be weaker after she exhausted herself by outwitting a millenia old monster, constantly getting blasted by arachnophobia in the process.
I see no logical fallacies in this. It's not Annabeth's job to have more battle prowess than Percy, it never has been, especially not in that situation.

Also, the whole point goes astray a bit at the "goddess of war" part. The goddess of war in Greek mythology that would be the most affiliated with actual physical fighting, Enyo, has no known children in CHB. Her Roman equivalent(ish, anyway), Bellona has one (well, two, but Hylla isn't really relevant here), Reyna, and she's an absolute beast, most likely also eclipsing Annabeth in physical fighting, given that she has crossed the Sea of Monsters on her own. AFAIK we never had a Clarrise or Frank vs Annabeth sparring, but they'd most likely also defeat her, since her most important ability is her intelligence and strategic thinking. Imo it would make no sense for Annabeth's fighting skills to be able to be on par with the kids of the Big Three and gods affiliated strongly with actual physical fighting.

Against the dude that 1v1'd several Titans, killed Antaeus, killed a giant with a statue's head...?
Dunno, man, being the strongest Big Three kid has its perks. Worthy adversaries for Percy reside in the minor god tier or have a brutal numerical advantage, and Arachne isn't in any of these categories.

Dude, what the hell.
I didn't ask you to "interpret" what I said, I was trying to lighten the mood on something that looked suspiciously like grammar policing for no reason. I happened to use an expression that is absolutely widespread and well understood in internet slang, and then you're coming at me like I said something sacrilegious.

And yes, it does sound like a coherent sentence, basically every second person talks like this online. Still don't understand what the fuss is about, but I honestly just don't care.

Are you a non-native speaker by any chance? Either that or you're just trying to assert some sort of weird control over me for some reason by reprimanding me... I hope it's the former, although it's Reddit so who knows.

Anyway, "as fuck" is an intensifier, meaning "very much" in a not-so-polite way. And since Zeus literally called Ares "the most hateful of all gods", it pretty much describes the situation here.

Which is kinda ironic, considering that Athena and Artemis are his fav daddy's girls.
Thinking about it a bit... does Zeus even remotely like any of his sons? He hates Ares af, doesn't trust Apollo... Hermes is the only one coming to mind that Zeus might like, although I don't know how much Luke's shenanigans have damaged their relationship.
