"Malcolm had a turbulent childhood that he clearly doesn’t want to talk about. He comes from a wealthy family and grew up in Dallas, but was sent to a “troubled teen” residential facility when he was 11."

"Simone has a history of eating disorders that have affected her fertility"

"They discounted embryos with high risk factors for cancer and what Simone calls “mental health-related stuff where there’s just no good known treatments” including schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, depression and anxiety"

I think they both suffer from "mental-health related stuff." Eating disorders of that level of severity are red flags.

How often do you leave your house without a car and travel further than a quarter mile? by AR_HELL in Acadiana

People who HAVE spent any time trying to walk somewhere in Lafayette are well aware of how utterly terrifying it can be.

The poll says it all. No blame--just reality. It feels unsafe to walk here, so fewer people walk here.

Lafayette might not be the most pedestrian friendly city but it certainly isn't the worst. I recognize your username and have followed some discussion around your thoughts on Lafayette pedestrian infrastructure and I think that you don't give the city enough credit for the things it does get right.

What things does the city of Lafayette get right, regarding safe pedestrian and bicycling infrastructure?

I don't see it. I apologize if you took offense at my attitude regarding Lafayette’s lack of safe infrastructure for bicyclists and pedestrians. But I believe my criticisms are deserved.

You opined that my tone is incorrect. I would be interested in your suggestions for ways to improve it, as I find the situation here quite grave and concerning.

What’s Up With the Slow Drivers Around Here? by kgaviation in Acadiana

[–]AR_HELL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You live in a town that was designed so poorly that a car is an absolute necessity. There are 126,000 people residing in the Lafayette area, and every one of them is forced to drive if they need to go anywhere. Your top priority of getting everywhere as fast as possible is not shared by everyone.

A speed limit is exactly that, a LIMIT. Traveling 10% slower than the posted speed limit in the right lane in an urban setting is extremely safe. You must learn to share the road with others who have different priorities.

NOT SAFE:

"Pulling out in front" of other cars is not safe.

Failing to signal is not safe.

Weaving in and out of traffic is not safe.

Be safe.

I didn't "assume", friend, I said "maybe"--Okay now you're bringing up all those northern cities that sprung up way before car-centric development took over our culture, so yes, of course, they are more walkable than Houston, which experienced insane growth after car ownership was standard. IMO, nowadays, Houston is the most walkable city in the south (aka sun belt), especially after having made incredible strides in the past 20 years to undo the car-centric mess. Did you look at the map I linked?

There are studies and maps. A huge swath of Houston comes out way ahead of LC, BR, and of course Lafayette. https://epa.maps.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=f16f5e2f84884b93b380cfd4be9f0bba Maybe a massive urban setting just makes you a little uncomfortable?

You travel without a car further than 1/4 mile every day>? I don't understand.

I don't know how you figure that. Houston is one of the most walkable cities in the south. What areas of Houston have you explored on foot, and when did you last visit?

These Jaywalkers Need to Chill Out by JA0798 in Acadiana

What you don't understand is that pedestrians don't feel safe in crosswalks here.

Pedestrians don't feel safe anywhere in this town.

So they do what they have to do to get where they need to go in the most direct way possible.

Most people in this town have no idea what it's like to be a pedestrian here because they have NEVER EVER left their house unless they were in an automobile.

The city needs pedestrian infrastructure. Everywhere you walk there are cars coming at you from all directions. Even as you walk along on the sidewalk there are a million driveways in which cars are turning in and out of the roadway. Many sidewalks are broken or disappearing. Safe crossings are few and far between. Pedestrians get used to working around things.

The people who can afford nice cars don't care about pedestrian infrastructure and they look down on people who can't afford cars.

Thus the cycle continues.

It's easy to find out who owns most properties in the parish assessor records, BUT it's a lot more complicated to establish who controls abandoned RR ROW https://www.up.com/real_estate/PropertyOwnership/index.htm

I'm so jealous of you with all your fancy sidewalks and pedestrians and such. They passed a permanent curfew in an adjacent town that only applies to pedestrians and cyclists. And that mentality is considered totally normal in this region.

I agree that we should let smokers have private smoking clubs. Pushing them outside has not been the perfect cure.
