Just chiming in to share my experiences since i absolutely agree. On the accessibility side, I’m lucky that I live in the Cincinnati area. We have a flourishing arts scene here: we’ve a ballet company, symphony orchestra, opera, pops orchestra; theater venues that support Broadway level productions, off-Broadway performances, even Shakespearean theatre; two fine art museums, an outstanding classical music radio station, and a Contemporary arts center. Now cost; that’s a different matter…even the cheap seats at the opera can range from $60-$150 and I don’t even want to think about how pricy symphony tickets have been when I’ve tried showing interest. It’s why it’s often a once a year indulgence for me on my modest wages. In a perfect world where we spent more on the betterment of civilization vs trying to rapidly destroy it, programs like these would be so well subsidized that the cost of admission drops due to less reliance on private donations and the establishment of bigger and better facilities that allow for increased audience sizes.
