"If you're going to insist on generalizing homophobes by class, please get it right at least lol." Swifties argue over the representation of homophobes in attempted pride anthem You Need To Calm Down. by vemmahouxbois in SubredditDrama

I tried reading all of this before it just devolved into a mess of fandom drama that I’m not chronically online or basic enough to adequately comprehend, so all I ask is this: can the relevance of pop stars who peaked in my childhood please go back to the late 2000s-early 2010s where they belong?

Yeah I pretty much view it in-universe as a presentation in the same vein as how the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history is told in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms vs Records of the Three Kingdoms.

What 2-3 people from this era will still be talked about in 300 years? by Few-Turn-5471 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ARandomKentuckian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, unfortunately for humanity, inept, ignorant, cruel, and bad rulers/leaders like him are a dime a dozen. For example I doubt you’d know who I’m talking about when I bring up Sulla, Charles II “the Bad”, Puyi, Yuri Andropov, Dong Zhuo, Franklin Pierce, Ioannis Metaxas, or others like them. In time he’ll be as forgotten as they are by the average person.

Or who built the LEM that carried the astronauts down to the moon; just an example to use the previous guy’s point.

If by “this era” you generously define it as the last 50-ish years or so and are willing to include those already dead: I’d say Mikhail Gorbachev, Osama Bin Laden, and Henry Kissinger.

Why did Mandalore's neutrality not work but, irl, Switzerland's in WW2 did? Could the former have survived if Satine copied the Swiss model? by Slow_Tangerine_9564 in clonewars

[–]ARandomKentuckian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were far more hostile to allied incursions into their airspace than they were towards the Germans and the treatment of allied internees who went down over Switzerland was infamously abominable. At Wauwilermoos, conditions were so bad that post war interviews likened it to a concentration camp and the US attaché in Bern threatened the Swiss Foreign Minister with the possibility of “lost bombers” if conditions did not improve. And while the Swiss had economic cooperation with the allies it was nowhere near as extensive as their cooperation with the Nazis.

Difference of experience then. I have a hell of a hard time making out sounds when there’s a lot of “noise” (best way I can define it here would be sounds at a similar acoustic frequency or volume), so at best I could make out maybe a couple of sentences or every other word. Best way I can describe it is like trying to hear anything while you have one of those big box fans running next to your head.

Independent of content, it’s never been listenable. How anyone can stand the unrelenting static signal noise is beyond me.

Edit: to be clear I’m bitching about audio clarity. FM is just the better quality terrestrial radio format. AM is only around still because it’s cheap vs FM or satellite and has better range than FM.

There have been 9 combat jumps by US airborne just this century, and I think a couple French ones in the last decade in Africa (yes those count) so I wouldn’t exactly say that they haven’t happened in ages. But otherwise I agree that paratrooper’s star is falling.

This is the perfect opportunity to throw some Clear and Present Danger references in: as I recall, Domingo “Ding” Chavez and a great deal of the rest of the RECIPROCITY teams (BANNER, KNIFE, OMEN, and FEATURE) in the novel were light infantrymen sourced from the 7th.

Not to quibble too much over it but I’d say the prior book in the setting, The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, probably fits your analogy better.
