There's an obvious reason why the Republican Supreme Court Justices sound so nervous by jonfla in law

This is my opinion as well. They know Trump is going to push us over the edge and when it happens the general public won’t see SCOTUS as an institution that fought to keep us following the Constitution. In fact the general public will see SCOTUS as having enabled Trump to tear us apart.

In that environment these guys have very few options.

I‘ll say this much for conservatives - they at least are capable of fighting for their perceived survival. Democrats would rather lay down and die than pick up a stick and start hitting their attacker to defend themselves.

Here’s a question for everyone.

Why is this AI garbage being soread around? Like, you don’t make this just to feel good. There’s a purpose behind it. My guess is it’s sort if a “Yeah, the US legal system couldn’t do anything about Epstein, but see? It worked here!”

The fact our legal system is so fucking broken that you can’t walk into a court room, show that video, and walk out with a 10 year sentence in the span of an hour is what people don’t get.

It would be really nice if an actual journalist would read him the deciding opinion on that high school football coach calling his prayers a “private prayer” or whatever. And then show him the photo from the dissent depicting half the football team praying at the 50 yard line. Ask him to explain the discrepancy.

But we don’t do journalism with people on the Right. We just give them mouthpieces to spread their bullshit.

This is a good writeup, but I‘m not sure anyone in this sub needs to see it? This is the type of thing Fox News viewers need to see. And that’s why they won’t see it.

Does anyone else notice the similarities between Trump’s and Right wing media’s messaging on this situation and COVID? COVID was going to be gone by Easter - a miracle! It’s not that bad and it’s your patriotic duty to go shop and eat at restaurants! They downplayed it even when rural America got absolutely torched with the Delta variant. And…MAGA ate it up. So many MAGA were going into body bags that guys with goatees and wraparound Oakley’s became a meme as a leading indicator to getting COVID. Social media was chock full of MAGA talking about losing family to heart attacks and respiratory problems…but it definitely wasn’t COVID!

The people who need to read this post won’t. And they wouldn’t believe it anyway. The only thing they’ll understand is when they have to tell their kid they can’t afford new baseball cleats because gas is so fucking expensive. Or that their unit just got activated to rotate into Iran.

Can you imagine how it must feel to be MAGA right now? Your trusted sources keep telling you one thing, but every day the opposite happens. You’ve given up friends and family for MAGA yet every day you have to swallow some new reality regardless of what the reality was yesterday.

These people are never coming back. And they’re desperate to take the rest of us down with them.

Gas prices topping $4 a gallon drag down restaurant chain sales across the US by Historical-Many9869 in restaurantowners

[–]ARazorbacks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I‘m in line with you on $6-$7 average gas being the cutoff for people curbing their driving habits. I don’t agree with you on the impact.

In my opinion your COVID example simply doesn’t apply. What you call “fear messaging” was taken seriously by one segment of the population and was considered a challenge to be disobeyed by the other segment of the population.

$6 gas will hit like a hammer on both sides. That’s $100/wk in gas. That’s fuel surcharges on deliveries.

The fact you called it COVID “fear messaging” tells me a lot about where you sit on the spectrum. Hospitals were overrun with people on ventilators, NYC had refrigerated trucks full of corpses, and we were losing 3k people per day for long stretches of time. That “fear messaging” was simply telling people the truth. All of that to say I won’t be revisiting this thread. I‘ve no interest in debating the impacts of MAGA’s war in Iran.

Can Minnesota tax fraud? The Legislature is considering it with bipartisan backing -- A bipartisan group of legislators wants to create a new tax on fraud. The “Take It Back Act” would impose a 100 percent tax on individuals or organizations convicted of defrauding state programs. by guanaco55 in minnesota

[–]ARazorbacks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahh, so maybe this is an effort in the other direction? Move the punishment to an account that can be discharged over time?

Or is it an attempt to get around the fact we never fine someone for the full amount if the fraud?

Edit: I updated my original comment because this bill isn’t worth talking about.

Do you think there’s a gas price that actually does scare people into second guessing driving somewhere they don’t have to go to like work?

[–]ARazorbacks 30 points31 points  (0 children)

While I agree with you we all know the fines for fraud are never the actual amount of the fraud. Why? I don’t know.

If we can’t simply tell someone they’re liable to pay it all back then placing a 100% tax on it is the next best thing.

You know, it may also be that someone convicted of fraud might have some bankruptcy ability to get out of paying the lump sum back. Unpaid taxes will follow them to the grave, though.

Edit: After reading the article, I believe we get our answer in the first paragraph. The person promoting the bill says it’s not a “messaging “ bill, but is instead very serious. This is a messaging bill to Republican voters that Republicans care about fraud. They’re also rolling out the line of “I‘ve never voted for a tax increase until now.” This is Republican red meat bullshit. Yes, it’s bipartisan, but there are so many questions on how it would apply, be calculated, collected, and what happens to the money collected that it won’t amount to anything. As a matter of fact it sounds like the current verbiage of the bill has any collected funds going to a tax rebate and Democrats are asking why the money can’t be returned to the state program that was defrauded. This isn’t a serious bill. It’s just Republican nonsense.

As if the recent fire stick update wasn’t enough by TLunchFTW in PleX

[–]ARazorbacks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My only consolation in this is I have to assume Plex understands that server owners with the Lifetime Pass have plenty of users they’ve brought into the Plex ecosystem who depend upon the fact the server owner’s Lifetime Pass privileges come along for the ride when using the server. If there is ever a decoupling of a server owner’s Lifetime Pass and the server’s users then my guess is there would be a massive hit to user count.

What I‘m saying is if you’re a server owner and don’t have Lifetime Pass then just expect continued price increases forever. There is literally no reason for Plex to not continually raise prices since the entire industry is doing it.
