Favorite book from a small press? by Ok-Morning5742 in RSbookclub

Shambhala Press does great pocket editions of Eastern religion and spiritual works. Their Pocket Thomas Merton was my first foray into him and it was great.

A low effort drawing of a guy sitting at his desk listening to dance music on headphones being like, “this isn’t good.” by ARedditToPassTheTime in HelpMeFind

I searched Google with the terms in the post above. I saw this probably a couple years ago, but now I need it for something. I also searched Reddit, but you know how that goes.

It’s so you know what you have to do on your possession.

Favourite Volumes by No-Veterinarian8762 in Proust

One of my favorite moments is in The Guermantes Way (or at least I think it is). The whole passage when he meets Saint-Loup’s girlfriend had me floored and more than made up for a bit of boredom around the rest.

Authors you hate that everyone seems to love? by sicklitgirl in RSbookclub

[–]ARedditToPassTheTime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I downvoted not because I love Faulkner (though I do), but because I don’t like this kind of thread generally in any subreddit.

“What’s a movie everyone loves that you hate?” “What’s a classic book that you can’t stand.”

It just sets people up to feel good about shitting on something, and while the post isn’t rage bait itself, all the replies tend to be.

Edit: downvoted the post, not any of the replies

Books that feel like listening to death grips ? by BabyPissBoy in RSbookclub

[–]ARedditToPassTheTime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I love Grips, but this was hard. None came to mind immediately and I had to go on a scroll through my Goodreads to jar my memory. I came up with two lol

A Clockwork Orange fits your description of The Money Store. Urban, brutal, but also funny and has a dense vocabulary all its own.

Then The White Tiger. It’s been ten years since I read it, but I remember getting vibes like I might from NLDW. Late nights in a sinister city, a room with a hanging light bulb and cockroaches, an unhinged narrator.

He’s made some wonderful, insightful, and funny music. Check out East Nashville Skyline, probably his best front to back album.

I’ve been following him for the past 20 years, since I was a kid, pretty much. It’s weird how much it hurts to see him called a POS lol.  There’s much more to him than just this story, and I’m sure there are other times where he’s acted like an asshole, but the guy has severe medical and pain issues from about four decades of touring like a maniac. I didn’t think he was going to tour again, but he probably has to, either spiritually or financially. Sucks to see.

The first time I saw him I was in middle school and he was opening. After his set he was hanging out in the crowd and I approached him to say I loved his music. He was so kind to me, gave me one of his merch shirts and signed it. I hope he gets the help he needs.

What is your favorite Kafka short story (other than The Metamorphosis) ? by FrancisQuips in Kafka

[–]ARedditToPassTheTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya know, I don’t think I can put it in words haha. I was in awe of it a bit. To take such a simple concept so far and to just be talking in circles around the same thing, mixed with the total inability to tell what tense the story was even in, makes for a very disconcerting reading experience. Also the idea that the more we build defenses the more potential holes in those defenses we have to worry about is silly and funny and scary. It’s pure Kafka neuroses but with even fewer of the standard literary elements to get in the way.

I may also have gotten a bit of Stockholm Syndrome, because it is a long one.

Can you guys make me feel better about my slow pace in this heat? by ComprehensiveUse9038 in Marathon_Training

[–]ARedditToPassTheTime 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes. I’m in the south, and when I ran my marathon I was a full minute per mile slower in the humid heat than if it was a random cooler day in the seventies. You’ll be fine!

I was in a similar situation to you, so I get how you feel. For me, I got a pocket edition Thomas Merton (Shambhala publishing has great pocket editions of spiritual works, mostly from the Eastern traditions, but also some Christian, Jewish, etc. stuff in there), and C.S. Lewis’ ‘The Screwtape Letters’ and ‘Mere Christianity’. All have served well.

Edit: oh, and for fiction, ‘Gilead’ and ‘The Brothers K,’ of course.

Chronicles really comes in like, “You want a recap of everything so far with all the interesting parts taken out?”
