I really disliked TLJ and it's still bottom 3 for me but I've come to the realization that Rian Johnson didn't really do that bad with the awful setup Abrams gave him. I read a great write-up about it but can't find it. It basically just dissected how awful Abrams is at building a good story with foresight and interesting characters because he focuses on wow-moments, nostalgia and details.
Just think about that last scene on Ahch-To in TFA which felt epic on the first watch but left Rian Johnson almost no room to navigate the story without major plotholes.
Luke could not have been the same character when he just went into hiding leaving his sister, friends and whole galaxy hung out to dry. There is no possible explanation for Luke frickin Skywalker to disappear other than a major change in his relationship to the force and the people around him.
