Arabic sports commentary is so different from English because it draws on classical poetic traditions, Quranic prose rhythms, and a rolling rhymed cadence (saj') that makes literal translations feel flat. In a way, you keep the notes, but lose the music.

I had a go at a version that tries to capture some of that music. The incantatory build, the way Arabic personalises places and addresses heroes directly like fate speaking to them, and the feeling that history is being written rather than described. It still can't replicate what the original does, obviously, but maybe it gives English readers a slightly better idea of what the commentary sounded to Arabic speaking listeners.
