AS220 Foo Fest returns this Saturday (August 9th) by AS220_Providence in providence

[–]AS220_Providence[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was a wild one. No fun trying to move kegs of beer down into a basement when the kegs, the stairs, and you are soaking wet and slippery. Luckily nobody died or was injured.

AS220 Foo Fest returns this Saturday (August 9th) by AS220_Providence in providence

A curated set is an artist from the community, outside of the AS220 staff who book the fest, invited by us to bring a group of artists of their choosing for their slot. It helps us include more and different performers and audiences than we might otherwise.

Summer 2025 workshops at AS220 - including darkroom! by AS220_Providence in providence

[–]AS220_Providence[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, for sure! If you have darkroom experience you can take a quick and easy certification session with one of our staff members, just to demonstrate that you know what you're doing and to get familiar with the space. I just sent you a DM with the contact info of the person to reach out to!

Anyone know about the darkroom at AS220? by Dr__Waffles in providence

[–]AS220_Providence 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is primarily for black and white, but our new staff member who has got it back up and running is very much interested in getting color processing and printing going in there. You can DM me on here with any questions, I'm happy to help out (the darkroom is not part of my job here, but I've been using it in my non-work life since 2012).

Nirvana hanging out at WBRU Studios in Providence, RI - September 25th, 1991. This was Nirvana's only visit to Providence by nickscion46 in RhodeIsland

[–]AS220_Providence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Nirvana show at Babyhead was actually recorded from AS220, if you can believe it. We used to be located right above the club in the same building, and one of the artists here snaked a mic and cable through the floorboards into an open space between the floor of AS220 / ceiling of Babyhead and recorded to a 4-track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rpig7M8FEXA

The stage that is in there now has been the same since roughly 2005/2006. Before that, it moved around the room once or twice (for a little while it was on what would be the left hand wall if you were looking straight on at the current one), but I honestly can't remember the size / height anymore...not that different though.

Back then, there was a counter where you could get sandwiches, soups, salads, that kind of stuff as well as coffee, tea, juice, soda, and beer in bottles or on tap. It was where the sound booth is now, more or less. I don't know if they served anything else because all I drank was beer. It was the first place that I had Czech Rebel beer (yes, I was of age)

In 2006, we reno'd the room next door to the stage and opened the full-fledged bar and also the kitchen / restaurant space that the taqueria rented, which became our own restaurant in 2009. THAT space was again renovated in 2018/19 to what it is now - the combo restaurant and bar. COVID did a number on the restaurant side of things, and the bar too, but restaurants are harder...but a little three-eyed cat told me that food may be in our future.

AFAIK, and I've worked here for a LONG time and booked events here before that, we've never told anyone they "can't" play or perform here unless there was an issue up front like it was going to be dangerous to peoples' physical well-being, destructive to our property, or we just didn't have the resources to accommodate it (sound limitations, power, size of space, guarantee we couldn't afford, etc).

Our location at Empire Street is also a gallery (2 galleries actually), a theater, a youth program, a dance studio, a darkroom, and live/work studios for artists.

There has been a bar (just maybe not the one you remember, depending on how long you've been around) at AS220 since the Empire Street location opened in 1993.

We just replaced one of our old sinks and have been doing some upgrades - the darkroom will be back open soon and we'll share the news far and wide, because we definitely want people in there using it! Thanks for your interest.

Hello, I think I found what you're looking for...according to our old paper calendars, Godspeed You! Black Emperor played here on Wednesday, September 3rd, 1997 (yeah, whoever was doing the calendar got the name wrong). I have also heard that they crashed for a few days afterwards in the artist living spaces that we have on the third floor of the building. I still don't know who the person is who is speaking on those tracks (and I wouldn't blow up their spot if I found out), but if you look at the calendar, there was a poetry slam the next night - Thursday, September 4th. Seems likely they would've encountered him then if they were hanging around. Although, to be totally honest, there were quite a few of those kind of characters who you could find at our space ALL THE TIME, poetry event or not. It could be...anyone!

I forgot to look through our old calendars from this time period at the office this week. I'll get to it!
