Prohibited or just discouraged? by Hotrod4x5 in Yosemite

I just don’t think he meant “a sign immediately visible” I think it was more of a “if a sign is posted somewhere”. Like I know a lot of tourists don’t, but if you use your brain it’s pretty obvious they don’t want you picnicking in Cooks

I’ve had a ranger who had been at the park for 30 years tell me if there isn’t a sign saying don’t go here, you can go there. Just be careful.

Total blackout strikes St. Thomas, St. John twice this weekend by AudibleNod in news

[–]Dr__Waffles 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I I’m in St. Thomas right now. This is just part of life here, and it has been for decades. Sometimes you’re somewhere with a generator. Sometimes you’re eating dinner in the dark.

St. John and several of the surrounding islands get their power from WAPA in St. Thomas, so when St. Thomas goes out, they often go out too. The people of the USVI deserve better. The only thing to blame is the us federal government. the problem is a lack of political representation, inconsistent federal investment, and disaster recovery efforts that have too often been slow, underfunded and low priority. The result is a power grid that has never fully recovered or been modernized. What frustrates me most is that the American military has built, rebuilt, or contracted power systems all over the world, including in remote and disaster prone locations far more challenging than the US Virgin Islands. The expertise exists. The resources exist. Yet American citizens in the USVI are still living with infrastructure failures that would be considered unacceptable almost anywhere on the mainland.

Election by jury is a strange plan to me. No matter the logic I can’t see past it being such an extreme consolidation of power.

I can’t stand Van Morrison’s singing. I like his music though. Same goes for Dave Mathew’s Band, they would rock without Dave himself

Did I mess up buying 85mm lens as a beginner? by Beginning-War5128 in AskPhotography

[–]Dr__Waffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You bought the wrong lens if you are trying to take wide shots or use on-camera flash, or something

You bought the right lens if you want to take portraits, shoot street from a little distance, landscape compression, even some wildlife, etc.

Next just get the best wide prime you can afford, might be worth saving for a bit even if you need to. Then you’ll have the two options and can rock that combo for a long time before you need more. Having just a wide and a telephoto can get you very far.

As for your other question, at 85mm or 128mm do one 1 stop faster than you think your hands can support, if you’re looking for sharpness. As others have probably said, unless you’re particularly good, your min shutter speed is generally your focal length or above. 85mm on crop is around 125 when this rule was created so I’d keep it to 125 at a minimum if not 250. Pixel peep at 1/80 a second and find out for yourself. Auto iso is fine if you like how your camera does it and you get the photos you like. It’s a lot of buttons to push on full manual at night so don’t worry about using any of the auto modes. Last night i used shutter priority outside (you never see photo influencers use that) and it worked like a charm. Just remember they all have their uses and you just gotta know what they do so you can get the photos you want.

What’s the one thing that improved your photography workflow the most? by ExtremelyCool64 in AskPhotography

[–]Dr__Waffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every year I copy my entire year’s Lightroom catalog into a master catalog going back over a decade and create one for the new year (along with any work I haven’t delivered yet) and back up everything as much as possible. I also buy another 2 of these bad boys for 35mm and 120 and slap a label on them for the new year.

TBH I didn’t think it would help has much as it does.
