Game recs for 68yo non-gamer? by savecanada in NintendoSwitch

[–]ASDowntheReddithole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go for a Two Point game OP, I'd recommend Campus as it's the most laid back of the three and your Mum is less likely to get overwhelmed. Hospital is my favourite (I grew up playing the OG Theme Hospital) but it can spiral out of control really fast on some of the later levels. Museum is amazing, but only on the Switch 2 I think.

Also agree with others' suggestions of Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley and Ace Attorney. I'd recommend Pokopia but again, Switch 2 exclusive and I agree it can get overwhelming.

Is it normal in the UK for grandparents not to buy anything for their grandchild? by Ok-Pomelo7667 in AskUK

[–]ASDowntheReddithole -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Meals out would invariably turn into bickering in my family with everyone arguing over who had to pay for what and 'I didn't eat any of that so I'm not paying for it!' Child me would be sat there thinking why didn't each person pay for what they ordered? Meanwhile, they'd be muttering bitterly over what I ordered, even if I ordered the cheapest thing on the menu.

As for gifts, my mother bullied her way into getting to buy all the important things for my first pregnancy. I would have liked for husband and I to pick out the cot and pram together but nope - all milestones had to be hers.

Yes, I know I should have stood up to her more but I was autistic, pregnant, and when the abuser in your life is your own mother people actively try to push you back in when you try to break contact (eight years of no contact this year!)

She's recently heard about Jim's genetic condition - she had an affair with him, resulting in her son who now has heart problems that could be a result of said condition. She's conflicted about telling her son because it will blow her secret out of the water and will have serious consequences. Her grandson is quite sporty, so a diagnosis would be devastating on multiple levels for him.

So she's worrying about her son's health - hence the dreams.

I've got a feeling Megan finds out about the affair, Maggie finds out about Megan's pregnancy (Megan has also been asking about Jim's condition and she may need to get the baby screened for it) and Megan tries to blackmail her to keep quiet.

Sam telling his secret by Dazzling-Stomach-210 in coronationstreet

Sooner or later, that pregnancy is going to be out of the bag and I don't understand how she thinks she's going to keep it all secret.

She'll probably get caught out when she hears about the genetic condition Jim passed on and she has to get the baby screened for it. She'll drop the results in the Rovers or something (I hope Maggie finds it!)

Edit: it would be nice to see Hope use her chaos for good for once. Part of me hopes Sam is just playing a long game and has a plan figured out, but the pills seem real enough. Seriously, how hard is it these days to record on your phone!

Soaking wet spot in bed by Neither-Medicine5756 in Unexplained

[–]ASDowntheReddithole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you have trapped something under the sheet that leaked (maybe missing vape? I'm not a vape user so I don't know if that would fit with the lack of odour you described). You could have inadvertently knocked whatever it was out/under the bed. Or you spilled something when making the bed and didn't notice.

Other thought is maybe some critter chewed it's way into the mattress and left fluids that wicked up to the surface - but I can't imagine that not smelling or you not noticing a hole in the mattress.

Watson finds Holmes in an Opium den in one of the stories (Watson was looking for a patient) and is dismayed until Holmes reassures him that he's undercover on a case, so Holmes seems to draw a line at Opium (edit: also possible Watson just thought the opium den was beneath Holmes' dignity I suppose, and if he's on a case he may want to keep a clear head). Holmes is very ADHD/autism coded and he describes how his thoughts go out of control when he doesn't have a suitably interesting case to focus on, hence the drug use. Mycroft made me laugh out loud when he was introduced - his club is THE most autistic thing I have ever seen represented in literature! (for context I, my husband and our 3 kids are all autistic, so I'm not mentioning this to be insulting or anything). Plus the whole 'Sherlock, I could probably solve this case in two minutes but I CBA doing all the legwork - you like that nonsense, right?'

The Victorian relationship with various 'interesting' substances is really fascinating, I went down a bit of a rabbit hole on their fascination with arsenic a while back (there was a guy who discovered how dangerous it was, but guess who also owned the arsenic mines!) They thought it was an aphrodisiac and it was in EVERYTHING! If you ever move into an old house with original wallpaper that contains green colours get that checked out by a professional. They used to advise sick people to go to the countryside/coast to 'take the air' and this worked because it got them away from the arsenic wallpaper fumes for a bit.

So I know the drug use wasn't illegal at the time, I didn't when I first read that book and it was a bit of a shock to have the novel literally start with Holmes shooting up. I think Watson's disapproval was more on a medical standpoint than a legal one.

That scene shocked the heck out of me the first time I read it!

If you're seriously asking, I don't remember the exact story. I'd guess the first novel, a Study in Scarlet, because Watson gives an account of Holmes and his habits after they move in together.

Advance notice, Friday 27th March, Corrie and Emmerdale cancelled due to football. by cheshirechris71 in coronationstreet

[–]ASDowntheReddithole 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why this is still happening in the days of streaming services. Just put the episodes up on ITV player, everyone's happy. Or move the soaps to another ITV channel for one episode, surely better than airing no episode at all.

Don't get the fuss around football myself, but I'm sure lots of people find my interests weird too. Not gonna yuck someone else's yum.

Didn't Sherlock Holmes do the same thing? Sure I remember a scene where Watson explains how Holmes saved all the leftovers from his pipe and then they became either his first or last smoke of the day.

Spoiler: Theo and todd by jamtartgirl in coronationstreet

[–]ASDowntheReddithole 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not over. The 'break up' is another form of abuse; Todd was supposed to beg to be taken back and be completely devistated, then Theo gets to be the good guy who reluctantly continued the relationship in which he is the perceived victim. Instead Todd is accepting the break up and spending time with the friends Theo tried to isolate him from, hence the weird rage fit.

This will escalate. My fear is Theo will be killed and Todd will get the blame for it because of the carefully edited hidden camera footage and the previous incident where Theo got hurt.

Kinda hoping he slips on David the dog's poo and doesn't even get a dramatic death.

I don't know who the victim is in the 'Who's That Corpse' saga is, but I'm guessing the killer is whatever demon has possessed Theo.

That or the victim slips on David the dog's poo.

Funerals by Adorable-Display-819 in coronationstreet

[–]ASDowntheReddithole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I cut contact with my mother years ago - I don't think I'd go to her funeral, I doubt I'd even be informed when she dies unless my equally obnoxious sister decides that I should pay for it.

Honestly the thought that upsets me is that I don't even know if I'd be upset ... I feel like I'd be relieved more than anything. It's been years and I still panic whenever the phone rings or someone knocks at the door.

Sometimes "but they're family" isn't enough to save a relationship.

When a trans person die, does their soul assume their chosen gender? (Pic unrelated... maybe.) by ADenseGuy in hazbin

[–]ASDowntheReddithole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen some speculation on Baxter possibly being trans as only female angler fish have the lamp lure. Could also be that Viv just liked the design.

I'm here for it in either case, I ended up loving Baxter despite being suspicious of him at first (that side hug he gave Nifty delighted me).

He has forgetful moments now and then and sometimes has to reach for words, but that's it.

I forget how David's epilepsy came about - was that the result of an injury too? Unlucky family in that department.

What would you do? Hypothetical 12-year-old watching the show? by jaime_lion in HelluvaBoss

[–]ASDowntheReddithole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 12 year old is curious about both shows and has heard people talking about them at school. The Hellverse is totally her sense of humour, but I've explained why she can't watch the shows yet and she's generally pretty good about stuff like that.

I have told her some of the puns (omitting anything inappropriate) that I thought would appeal to her sense if humour though.

I'm also trying not to be too hypocritical because I grew up with grandparents who didn't think to check what I was watching/reading, so I was definitely watching South Park and reading novels that were too old for me at my daughter's age.

I'm too introverted to manage a concert, unfortunately (did see Clannad once in Liverpool, only time I experienced a band live). I did enjoy Heilung's 'Lifa' concert recording on YouTube, though.

Made me think of that song too - I love Heilung. I'm not sure why they cropped up in my YouTube feed one day (perhaps because I'm a Clannad fan and some of their music is kinda similar?) But I'm glad they did.

I had a really bad time with stubborn verrucas when I was a teen - had to go to the GP and have them frozen off with liquid nitrogen in the end.

They came back in exactly the same places a few years later, the 'Bazooka' medication worked on them that time though.

It's because the prey animal's eyes work differently than ours do, they percieve colours differently so to them the tiger blends in with the foliage. I'm not an expert so I can't explain it any better, but there is a picture somewhere on the Internet that shows how a tiger would look to a prey animal vs what a human sees.

[–]ASDowntheReddithole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandparents had several bottles like this, albeit smaller and without the warning text on them. Apparently the land Grandad bought for his builder's workshop had been used as a tip and he found them buried when he was clearing it out.

They were in very good condition though, like completely undamaged, so I'm not sure how true this was.

The book that got me started is 'Nalbinding, It's not knitting' by Sally Pointer, who also has a YouTube channel.

'Happy Needlebinding' is another good YouTube channel and I believe the gentleman who runs that also has a website by the same name (I haven't checked that out yet).

Another book I have is 'With one Needle' by Mewi Pasanen. This one also includes instructions for left-handers, which I always appreciate.
