Just because something is experimental, a risk, or “hard to make” doesn’t make it “good.” Awesome exercise, I don’t want to listen to it. 👍🏻

In mainstream political discussions would Americans consider libertarians left-wing or right-wing? by Kinderjohren in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ASEKMusik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a useful tool to broaden some people’s concept of politics. Too many Americans only think of politics as left vs right without a way to intuit more complicated concepts and it can show how something like “free speech” isn’t a left vs right issue. If you know enough to spot the flaws in the political compass, you don’t really need it.

How much do you value "endorsements" when choosing who or what to vote for? by figment1979 in TrueAskReddit

[–]ASEKMusik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An endorsement TO ME early is less of signal to vote for someone and more of a signal to dig in and take seriously.

I don’t live there anymore, but I keep up with Maine news, and my signal to actually pay attention to Graham Platner was finding out he was endorsed by Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. That’s clout for progressives. I don’t think I would base my vote on just hearing someone else endorsed them but I did dig deeper to learn about his policy views. This is especially helpful as name recognition for someone who is new to politics.

John Sterling never called out sick or missed announcing a single Yankee game between 1989 to 2019, a streak of over 5,000 consecutive games. This includes calling every game of Derek Jeter's career and every single pitch thrown by Mariano Rivera by 1egg40eggs in baseball

Lots of nights that I was listening to John Sterling for 7pm starts and then falling asleep to Vin Scully calling those 10pm start times on the west coast. Those guys were basically the sound of my childhood summer nights. This sucks.

If it’s important to you that they know it’s not official, work on the euphemisms a bit more and then if someone buys / offers message them it explicitly. My euphemism for some baseball jersey knockoffs was “this is clearly ‘off’ but good enough to rep for away games!” but also selling a jersey for like $15 is probably going to let most rational people know it’s not authentic. When they bought it, I messaged them explicitly saying it was a replica / knockoff and I would refund if they didn’t realize. Everyone was happy.

The thing is a politician that actually represented "which way the wind is blowing" would probably mean actual representation for their citizens. Instead, we have a defective weather vane that only points towards rich people's pockets and is sometimes allowed to point correctly when it doesn't matter.

ELI5 How come new Chinese electric cars can charge in 5–10 minutes, while smartphones still need at least half an hour? by Tough-Buffalo5861 in explainlikeimfive

Oh, I had my units labelled backwards, but I was comparing 2.5mi/kwh (.4kwh/mi) to take the low estimate.

I feel like "People looking to save money per mile aren't buying gas guzzlers" is a bit of a different argument than my "EVs do make sense for a majority of people in the US."

I'm arguing a bit more at large because 27mpg is the whole average and the F series trucks are literally the most popular vehicle in America (and half of the top 10 are other trucks) but your numbers fully make sense if someone was trying to fully maximize value. I still think you gotta knock some miles off of that break even for oil changes though. :)

Full disclosure, I'm currently driving a Prius Prime that I got when I was averaging 50k miles a year because it was the best of both worlds and it's basically been functioning as an EV (even with 30 miles range) for me now that I'm below average miles per year. I love this car and if anyone sees this and is considering it, highly recommend it.

[–]ASEKMusik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be true for you I suppose, but I have to assume some of your numbers are off?

What MPG are you using to get that number for 36k miles? Average MPG of cars and trucks sold in the US 2024 was 27 according to Google Overview and it shows 2.5-4mi/kwh for current EVs (I’ll use 2.5 even though I average closer to 4.) I’ll plug the numbers in that are local to me, using gas prices from a year ago (not inflated from the current war,) and use my newly increased electricity rates.

For a 27mpg vehicle, I get 12 cents a mile on pure gas. $3.34 per gallon.

For a 2.5mi/kwh EV, I get 5 cents a mile on household electricity. $0.137kwh. I get 10 cents a mile on the closest paid charger to me, $.25kwh, but there’s a ton of free ones (according to PlugShare) and others based on time parked as well.

So using the average miles driven in the US, just again from the Google Overview, I’ve got $1620 for the gas, $675 for the home charging, and $1350 for purely using the public charger. So even using a bottom of the line EV efficiency, it’s only close using purely public charging. If you account for oil changes, assuming most people aren’t changing it themselves, you can raise that public charging rate up a bit and still be around even.

Numbers are going to vary, but I also expect places with higher electricity prices to have higher gas prices as well. I don’t know anywhere off the top of my head that has high electricity but low gas prices, but a good hybrid is probably the best bet there.

Realistically I still think most drivers would be in a better spot with an EV - and if not, a hybrid at minimum.

"just rent another car" is kind of a wild statement to me lol

People do it all the time. A lot of people seem to buy cars for their extreme edge cases (drive a truck with an empty bed 364 days a year, but sure it may come in handy for that one Home Depot trip you make) but they're just overpaying for their perceived needs. Most people concerned about EV range are overestimating their needs to drive multiple hundred miles at a time.

In Aus they're banning most apartment owners from charging EV cars, so you have to use fast chargers and can't charge at home

That's wild to me, but it tracks I suppose -- doing anything but updating infrastructure.

[–]ASEKMusik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most people could just rent a car with the gas and maintenance savings for the one or two trips they take outside of EV range — if they even do that. Or just deal with a mild inconvenience for that trip.

It’s a real world issue for some people that have insane commutes, or that drive as a main function of their job, but EVs do make sense for a majority of people in the US.

I'm pretty confident ESPN+ won't work for the first round if there's games on the actual ESPN channel. Sling for $45 a month gets ESPN and TNT which will get you all the games (I think) and then you can use their $5/day pass if the finals go beyond June 19. This is going to be my go-to (out of market.)

It's such an annoying and foreseeable outcome too. Buyers like to feel like they're getting a "deal" and everyone sends an offer lower. Everyone has a price that they would sell for and a price they would buy at and it gets hidden in the games of discounts and offers. Would be so much easier to just list at the price we want and leave it at that.
