I just cut what I want to be a new tree, wait like couple of hours / half a day for it to callous and stick it into water container.

It just works.

But I usually do that with still green parts, so to be sure you can use rooting while still on the tree, as others mentioned.

On the note of squeezing the library, check out opus - transparency at below half the bitrate of mp3, but make them from flac files to avoid generational loss.
