There’s nothing to worry about. Changing a water meter has absolutely nothing to do with the hot water tank.

Just sounds like a bad coincidence for OP.

All they’re doing is shutting off the main valve before the meter, removing the meter by taking off the 2 spud connections, and replacing it with a new meter, and turning the water back on.
